TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF WORKING A LONG SIDE TEXAS PRISONERS/INMATES/OFFENDERS SEEMS LIKE A LONG TIME, BUT THE TRUTH IS: THE TIME HAS FLOWN BYE. The experience has been more like earning a P.H.D. at The University of life, Every emotion known to man exists here within these walls or fences dependent on which prison you may be assigned to in Texas.
Over the years, I have been able to work one on one with at least 50 inmates a day, 5 days a week for 25 years. I think I have been subjected to almost every human emotion, pain, joy, and the bitter insult of rejection. The prison mind set can often be very stoic, but in a matter of moments the attitude can swing to total dependence, and the inmate is reduced to an emotional wreck.
So, just before you pass final judgment on an offender, stop for a moment and think, how many people outside the prison environment do I know that are capable of the same emotional swings. Yet they are not locked up, and society views them as fully functional, a little quirky, but normal for the most part.
The one characteristic that has stood out in all the years, is the resistance of offenders to become proactive on their own behalf, and the disregard or respect for the feelings, values, and property of anyone including themselves.
The subject that has always held the interest of most inmates in all of my classes over the years had to do with obtaining parole, and completing the parole requirement, and surviving the free-world without returning to prison.
Sadly most offenders have no plan other than saying, “I ain’t coming back…EVER” and that simply is not a plan for success!
Too many men/women return, or get themselves killed, simply because they refuse to modify their definitions of life or lifestyles.
So, lets get to what this is all about:

contributor, and not a detriment to the world they are going to rejoin.
