Dear Friend,

Firstly I’d like to wish you a warm welcome to Discover Crochet. My name is Jean Carrick and I have been crocheting for more than 60 years. I know that learning to crochet is something that a lot of people want to do but are put off because they think it is too difficult. In actual fact, it isn´t, you just need to learn certain basic techniques.

I decided to take a look at just what was available to help people realize their ambition to learn to crochet, and I have to be honest with you, I wasn’t that impressed with the quality of all that was on offer. A lot of the tutorial videos were not very good with their instruction content and it also seemed to me that too much emphasis was on advertising the brands of yarn used and consequently the instruction seemed to come second to that.

It made me think and I decided to put together a program showing the basic stitches which you need to learn and present them all in one place.

The tutorials take you through single, double crochet and all the basic stitches which can be used in all kinds of combinations. You will have immediate access to 39 videos and I shall be adding to this number over time.

As a member of Discover Crochet you will have full access to each and every video I ever make. There are so many exciting stitches you can learn that I can’t wait for you to take the plunge and get started. The sooner you start learning the sooner you are going to be adding designer crochet items to your wardrobe. You are going to be right up to the minute fashion-wise.

At one time crochet work was considered a bit old fashioned. Mention crochet and all anyone could think of was doilies.

This is so not the case now, if fashion designers are incorporating crochet items in their designs then you know it is highly acceptable to be wearing a crocheted garment.

Once upon a time you might have cringed if your Mum made you something that was crocheted, you did everything you could not to have to wear it – but now its a different story.

There are so many wonderful designers around, and the designs are so varied you wonder why this is suddenly happening. Why years ago crochet garments just didn’t look fashionable. They do now!

Bikinis and swimsuits, jackets and skirts, shawls and summer tops, there just isn’t anything that wouldn’t look good. Even hats seem to be making a comeback when they are crocheted.

Mind you, we all try to go too fast, think we can skip the early learning, but that’s just not a good idea.

If you don’t learn the basic stitches and basic skills then you are setting yourself up for a disappointment. Unless you are a total natural and can pick up the techniques straight off and go on to produce very acceptable items then you might put yourself off learning to crochet altogether.

That would be a great shame because you can get such a buzz out of creating something that you would be proud to wear yourself and not be worried about whether it would be acceptable as a gift to someone else.

Anyone teaching you can suggest a way to hold your crochet hook but in the end its up to you to determine the most comfortable working method. The technique is obviously going to be the same but how you hold your hook is down to you. Experiment until you are comfortable, until you feel you could go on for a long time without your hands feeling the strain.

How you hold the yarn is another area where you come up with your own way that feels comfortable but still lets you control your yarn.

Control of the yarn is crucial, you don’t want slack stitches and tight stitches. You must aim to make all your stitches the same. Obviously this is going to take practice.

Don’t become impatient to get to the really good stuff. If you rush it you wouldn’t be happy with the results I can guarantee. Also, you would be wasting your yarn and this all costs money. Take the time to learn properly and you are not going to be disappointed with the finished results.
