Bunk Bed for Kids!

This site provides access to easy to follow Construction Plans for how to build a Scandinavian style kids bunk bed including thorough details and color photos.  This bed is unique in that it is lower to the ground and therefor more accessible and safe for small children.  The bunk bed is designed to support standard twin mattresses.  The top bunk is located 5-feet from the floor and is supported by wood slats or a premade slat-type box spring.  The bottom bunk mattress rests on the floor or a box spring can be used to raise the mattress off of the floor.  The top rails are approximately 8-inches above the top mattress providing safety guardrails.

BACKGROUND:

I built the bunk bed for my daughters and created these plans along the way.  Construction is relatively simple, but does require a few power tools.  The details provide all the dimensions necessary to build the bunk bed.  The finish is up to you as you can choose the stain, urethane, or paint.  The construction is set up so that the panels are built first and can then be transported to the bedroom and quickly assembled.  The bed can also be disassembled.

The following the major power tools that are needed:
Table Saw with dado blade Circular Saw or  Mitre Saw Drill
HELPFUL HINTS:
A staple gun can be used to assemble the dry fit. A template can easily be made to locate the holes consistently. Panels can be painted with magnetic paint or other similar craft paint to create a fun interactive surface for your children. Painting the panels prior to assembly can provide a cleaner look. Installing the large panel at the last step is recommended.  The end panel can be split into two pieces to make transporting and assembly easier.
