MODEL RAILROADS

Welcome -- Model railroading has given me much pleasure and enjoyment
in the 30+ years that I have been involved in the hobby. Starting out
as a teenager in Kansas with my first layout in HO gauge, I feel I
have become an expert in the hobby from designing and building many
railroad layouts in several train scales. Since I have received so
much happiness, fun and pleasure, my initial goal is to pass along my
knowledge so others may benefit as well.

This hobby is a great way to relax and get away from that day to day
world and enjoy an adventure, not only for yourself, but also perhaps
for your family and friends.

My layout is now in my basement, and at present is in Sn3 scale, with
a small segment in regular S scale, for comparing narrow gauge to
standard gauge. Model train scale refers to the size of the model
train as compared to the real-life ones we see everyday.

Gauge refers to the distance between rails. For instance, most trains
in the US run on rails that are 4 8 1/2 between rails, normally called
standard gauge. Narrow gauge rails can be any distance, but many are 3
feet between the rails.

Most model railroaders operate normally in one of the five model
train scales. HO model train has the largest number of modelers due to
size, compared to the larger or smaller scales. HO scale has a ratio
of 1/87 the size of a prototype train.  N guage model trains are
about one half the size of HO at 1/160 and O scale model trains are
twice the size of HO at at at 1/48 the size, S is 1/64 and G scale
model trains are 1/22nd. TT scale at 1/120 and Z scale at 1/220 are
the smallest.

Building model train scenery is a rewarding experience. Learning how
to build your own scale mountains, towns, trees, buildings and other
structures is fascinating. (There have been tremendous advancements in
materials and techniques over the years, and sometimes I find the old
original ways work better, too. But with a little patience and
learning some neat tricks and techniques, you will find it's entirely
possible to build very realistic scenery, for your very realistic
scale model train to travel through.) Envision your steam locomotives
pulling cars of coal or gold ore from your mountaintop mine through
mountain tunnels.

There are  model railroad track plans and books available to help
you get started as well as model train shows and model railroad shops
with their model train supplies around the country.

Developing your own model train layout can be just as, or even more
exciting than having your first toy model train around the Christmas
tree, and can be as large or small, detailed or not as you can
imagine. You may be surprised that your family and friends can get
just as enthusiastic and involved as you.

Happy Railroading!
