PUTTING YOUR KIDS THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL CAN BE LIKE PUTTING YOURSELVES
AS PARENTS THROUGH AN EMOTIONAL WRINGER.

There's new and difficult subjects to conquer, interminable hours of
homework to get through, friendship issues, boyfriends and
girlfriends, bullying and cyber-bullying, the temptations of drugs and
booze, the perils and pleasures of social networking...the list goes
on.

And that's just for our kids!

For us parents, there are different pressures...working out what type
of school (government, private or religious) best suits our kids,
dealing with the bureaucracy of education, dealing with good or
not-so-good teachers, understanding education in the 21st Century, and
the relentless drain on our wallets are just some of the matters we
must address.

All of this at a time when our kids' bodies and mental states are
changing as hormones rage through their bodies - and at a time when we
expect the absolute best from them at school. All ingredients for 'the
perfect storm'.

NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO AVOID IT, THIS MAELSTROM COALESCES INTO
A HIGHLY EMOTIONAL TIME-BOMB WAITING TO BE SET OFF BY THE LEAST LITTLE
SPARK. AND LIKE ANY EXPLOSIVE DEVICE, THE RESULTS CAN BE DEVASTATING.

WE KNOW - WE'VE BEEN THROUGH IT.

Like all parents, we think of our kids as 'good kids' - and they
really are. But during the years 12 to 18, there will be days when the
pressures on them - and you - will be overwhelming. Jekyll and Hyde
had nothing on this.

Of course all of our journeys through these years are different. Many
of you may look at our story in horror - others of you might say:
_"Tsk! You reckon YOU'VE had it tough? Come and talk to US!" _

Nevertheless it's been _our_ experience - and in our darkest moments,
what often kept us going was_"Well! That'll make an interesting
chapter in the book!"_

It wasn't until part way through the last year of high school for our
last child that the decision to actually write the book went from part
'joke' to hard reality.t was born on the anvil of white heat over some
school issue or other (the flashpoint now thankfully forgotten) which
almost came to blows.

WE RESOLVED THERE AND THEN TO RECORD OUR EXPERIENCES - NOT ONLY AS A
CATHARTIC EXERCISE FOR US - BUT IN THE HOPE WE COULD PROVIDE SOME SORT
OF GUIDANCE FOR THOSE OF YOU WHOSE KIDS ARE FIGHTING THE HIGH SCHOOL
'WAR' ALREADY, OR FOR THOSE FOR WHOM THE BATTLE IS JUST OVER THE
HORIZON.

Our book is also for those who have emerged from the battle. Like us,
you will have come through, scarred emotionally perhaps, but
nevertheless you have survived.

We hope our book will help you lick your wounds, and understand
you've done your best. Parents often end the high school years
flagellating themselves that they 'should have done better' - but
what's done is done. Our book helps you understand that, and realise
it's time to move on.

AS A RESULT, THIS IS NOT A BOOK WRITTEN FROM THE DRY PERSPECTIVE OF
FORMAL EDUCATORS OR PSYCHOLOGISTS - INSTEAD IT'S A HUMAN PARENTS'-EYE
VIEW OF WHAT YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN WILL GO THROUGH DURING THE
'SECONDARY EDUCATION' YEARS.

We were also driven to write this as we found as we talked to other
parents that we all have had very similar experiences - but these
experiences are rarely documented from a parents' point-of-view.

While it might seem patently obvious, overwhelmingly we found that
parents learn about what they've done right (or, painfully, what
they've done wrong) from the 'school of hard knocks' - and in that
'school', there are few, if any, text-books.

Having been through that 'school' with two kids, we hope this book
will ease your passage and give you a 'heads up' on some of the issues
you and your children will face.

WE ALSO NOTE THAT IN DISCUSSIONS WITH INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS, THAT THE
PROBLEMS ARE 'GENERIC' ACROSS INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARIES. NO MATTER
WHERE THEY LIVE, KIDS GO THROUGH THE SAME PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT AND
PEER-TO-PEER PRESSURE AND SO ON.

Cultural issues aside, we must remember they are human beings after
all; kids are kids no matter whey they live. On the other hand, we
must recognise that cultural or geographic differences _can actually
add to the pressures on kids_. We hope our observations will give you
help, tips and solace in the way you deal with your kids, no matter
where you live.

We write our book under a _nom de plume._ Doing so gives us the
freedom to be honest and open about our experiences, our expectations
of our kids and they of us, our thoughts and criticisms of schools,
teachers and the education system, and our considered view of what the
education system has done for our kids' future. Most importantly we
don't want to embarrass _our_ kids!

For those of you who have reached the final year of high school with
your kids, or are part way through it, this book may be viewed as
'emergency first-aid'.

IF NOTHING ELSE, OUR ADVICE MIGHT SEEM MORE OF A SOOTHING 'SALVE' TO
CALM YOUR NERVES, GIVE YOU AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH, AND
SOLDIER ON KNOWING YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Overall, in these often grinding, unforgiving years, we believe the
better armed you are to make strategic decisions now will help you
better understand and help your kids.

We hope our book casts a light on high school education, what your
kids go through and how you as parents can survive these years with
less angst, less stress, and a with family unit going forward more or
less intact.

BY NOW YOU WILL HAVE PROBABLY WORKED OUT THAT OUR BOOK EDUCATES _YOU_
AS MUCH IT IS ABOUT THE EDUCATION OF YOUR KIDS.

When we were thinking of a name for our book, we came up with a
number of titles- but it wasn't until we were discussing with others
our plans for our book and the issues we have had with our kids over
the years, that the name for the book became abundantly clear.

Having recited the litany of problems we have encountered, one
drop-jawed mother (now grandmother) simply said: _"Oh! You poor
parents!"_
