3 EASY STEPS TO OPTIMIZE WINDOWS
By CJ, on November 30th, 2010
Over time, your trusty computer or laptop will unfortunately slow
down. Regardless of how powerful its technical specs are, old age will
eventually catch up and affect its performance. Buying a new computer
is an option but before doing so, consider optimizing Windows first.
This should give your computer a make-over and have it running almost
like new again.
DELETE UNUSED PROGRAMS AND FILES
A lot of manufacturers install trial versions of programs in a new
computer. If you don't plan to upgrade or buy the full versions of
these programs, or you don't find any of them useful, it is better to
just delete them. There could also be unused files, games or pictures
in the hard drive that you have long forgotten. If you still have old
games installed, uninstall them to free up some of the disk space.
To uninstall programs in Windows XP, go to Start > Control Panel >
Add or Remove Programs. This will display all the currently installed
programs in your system. Go through each one and click on Remove if
you want to uninstall it. For Windows Vista, go to Start > Control
Panel > Programs > Programs & Features. Choose the program and click
on Uninstall.
CLEAN UP AND DEFRAG THE HARD DISK
Windows has built in utility tools that you can use to defrag or
clean up the hard disk. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories >
System Tools. Use Disk Cleanup to to clean your drives, you can choose
which drives to clean. It will do a quick scan and tell you how much
space you can free up if you continue. Then, you can choose which
files to delete.
Use Disk Defragmenter to defrag your drives. You can choose Analyze
to have a better view of the disk usage before defragmentation. This
process will consolidate all the fragmented or scattered files on your
computer and improve the performance of the system.
Although very helpful, these Windows built-in utility tools are not
that thorough and may not be able to clean up everything on the
system. For further optimization, use a third-party software that
specializes in these tasks. A registry cleaner, for example, will be
much capable of cleaning your system by digging in to the registry.
LIMIT STARTUP PROGRAMS
There are several programs that Windows loads automatically during
startup. This enables you to open them right away. It may be helpful
if you frequently use or run these programs but if you rarely do, it
will just take up valuable space on the memory.
To disable some of the startup items, go to Start > Run > type
msconfig. Go to the Startup tab. Uncheck the items or programs you
don't want Windows to automatically load. Take note though, that some
of these are really needed by the system. Some of the startup items
that need to be there are Firewall programs, anti-virus or
anti-spyware programs and the software of your ISP. , , ,
