Before I whelped my very first litter of puppies (a lot of years ago…), I had looked through all the bookstores for a book that was written in "layman’s" language.
I was disappointed to find that there was only, what I considered to be, text books or veterinary books on the subject – nothing that was instantly understandable to the first time breeder.
So, I had to pester my more knowledgeable friends with questions like
She’s doing……..(fill in the blank) is she ready to give birth? She's pushing but the puppy is still not coming out - what do I do? She won’t lie down to have the puppy, what can I do? The puppies are squeaking a lot, are they OK? There is a puppy that won't feed, what can I do to help?
Mom won’t eat anything, what do I do? Mom is looking a bit thin but the puppies look fine – will she be OK? Oh, they were very helpful and answered my persistent questions very patiently, but I found that I was constantly worrying that something was wrong.
Fortunately everything was fine, but that particular birth was not as calm and stress free as I would have liked.
Many years later I now enjoy the whole process - because I know what to expect and what to do if a problem occurs.
