Brazilian Portuguese is a tough language to learn. When I first moved to Brazil I was unable to speak a single word of Portuguese.
How hard can it be? I thought. I'll just pick it up when I get there! I told myself.
After a few days of living here it began to dawn on me that this was not going to be as easy as I thought. The language seemed so complex and unusual to me and I seriously wondered if I would ever get my head around it. I realised that this was probably going to take some time. And, for me, it did.
However I since discovered that it needn't have taken so long, with the right information it really is possible to be communicating effectively in Brazilian Portuguese very quickly.
Whatever your reason for learning Brazilian Portuguese there is one thing that you will all have in common. All new learners have to start at the beginning, which is basic communication. It’s a fact that the faster you can reach the communication stage the faster you will learn Brazilian Portuguese.
Once you are communicating, progression comes naturally, quickly and best of all completely for free. Achieve initial, effective communication and anything is possible.
It is logical then that the ideal way to learn any language is to be able to start communicating from day one. But is it possible to be really communicating in this seemingly impossible language within days?

Like everybody else, when I started to learn Brazilian Portuguese my aim was to be communicating in as short a time as possible. Unfortunately for me, like most people learning a new language, I started my Portuguese learning in the traditional ways with the usual dull grammar lessons and the mind-numbing listen and repeat methods that makes the process so boring and zaps all the enthusiasm and drive out of you.
One Brazilian Portuguese course book I tried out claimed it was perfect for you if “your objective is simple everyday communication”. Great, that was my aim exactly!

I've heard that some people actually like grammar. Personally I've never met one of these people but if they exist I'm sure they would understand what the above means.
When I was starting out trying to learn Portuguese, not only did I not understand these terms but I didn't WANT to understand them. Reading chapter headings like this just made me want to throw the book out of my 7th floor window, go and find the nearest American bar and give up even trying to learn Brazilian Portuguese.
But NO. I was determined not to give up, the next course book I tried was less grammar focused. The new book promised I would be "Speaking Brazilian Portuguese right from the start with our simple building block approach". Great I thought, this will actually get me speaking rather than just throwing obscure grammar at me.

OK, so admittedly I learnt to speak Brazilian Portuguese right from lesson one but I have never yet in my life ever had to say either of these two things in Portuguese.
In fact I will go as far as to say that I don't think I have ever said these 2 phrases in ENGLISH in Real life conversation! What is the point in learning this if I'm never going to use it!? This is not real Brazilian Portuguese as it is spoken by real Portuguese speakers. This is classroom / phrase book Portuguese which in my experience is of no use in the real world.
To cut a long story short, I was completely baffled by the complicated rules and systems that grammar lessons focused on and the seemingly randomness of other course's vocabulary. Worst of all... No matter how hard I tried to put my Portuguese to use in the real world, I just couldn't communicate with Portuguese speakers. My head was spinning with grammar, pronunciation, tenses, clauses, rules and random vocabulary. Not exactly the right frame of mind for getting to know the locals. When you are confused and not enjoying the process of learning you know only one thing:
It isn’t working.
The solution? Cut out all of the nonsense and only learn what you need to learn. That is where my course comes in.
The first thing we need to be sure of in order to communicate in Real Brazilian Portuguese quickly is that we are learning words and phrases that we understand and are actually going to use. This is pure logic. The second thing we need to be sure of is that we remember and retain the Real Brazilian Portuguese so that we can use it in Real life. This is pure Science.

This sounds far fetched but it’s probably true. It’s a similar story with any language - there are surprisingly few words that we actually use in everyday real-life situations. Logically If we take the words that are used most often in Brazilian Portuguese and learn these few words first, and only these words to start with, you will be communicating effectively in Brazilian Portuguese very quickly.
It seems so obvious that you should start by only learning the words you are going to use yet traditional teaching methods ignore this logic.
Let me explain how I came to realise this fact.
When I was struggling to learn Brazilian Portuguese something happened to me that changed the way I thought about learning the language and sent my Real Brazilian Portuguese capabilities into overdrive.
While my Brazilian (English speaking) girlfriend traveled for a week with work I went to stay with her family in her small home city on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro where nobody speaks English. I still had very little Portuguese at my disposal but just enough to begin talking and interacting with the locals. What happened in that single week made me rethink the methods I was currently spending so much time and money on.
I was speaking very little Portuguese but what I was speaking was REAL I was saying things that I wanted to say because I needed things or was hungry or wanted to visit somewhere, and the responses I was getting back from the locals were of course also real. I learnt an incredible amount in this one week.
Amazed at my progress over just 1 week I sat myself down and looked at what I had actually used in this small city in order to kick-start my learning. Did I use grammar clauses and rules? Did I use complicated tenses and vocabulary?
No, because most of what I learned in the classroom was either useless or forgotten.
What I actually realised was that you need surprisingly little to communicate. When I was talking to people I had no time to recall grammar clauses and rules so I just spoke. In fact there was very, very little that I needed to know in order for me to begin interacting with Real Portuguese speakers.
When I came back to Rio de Janeiro I ditched the traditional lessons and continued to use this REAL Portuguese outside of the classroom and saw real responses and made interactions. My heart leaped with joy. Now I was making progress and enjoying it!
In a very short time, I found that I could communicate in Brazilian Portuguese, I gained the confidence to go up to complete strangers and say exactly what I needed to say. I was able to order meals, get directions, ask questions, and join in conversations and of course I was also understanding what they were saying back to me.
The more and more I practiced and communicated with real people the more my abilities multiplied. Once you have this base of communication tools you can develop and improve your capabilities naturally through real conversation - and completely for free!
There are countless words that you could learn that you will never use. It’s pure logic that you only learn words that you are going to actually use. With my course there is no filler or time wasted by learning non common words there’s no point in doing this!

But even if we can do this, what’s the use in having all of this fantastic information if we cannot recall it when we need it in conversation?
This was a big problem for me when I started to learn Brazilian Portuguese because my memory sucks!
The mistake I was making was this: When asked to learn a new word in Portuguese it is natural for us to link the Portuguese word to the English word in our minds through repetition. I used to spend hours and hours trying to imprint new Portuguese words and phrases into my memory in this way. The process was boring and almost completely ineffective. I simply could not retain any significant amount of vocabulary for more than a few hours.
After some research into memory techniques I discovered that this method of repetition and linking words to words is completely flawed. It is just not the way our brains have evolved to learn.
There is a solution.
What’s the secret?
A mnemonic can be described as a system of linking new information to familiar information in our minds. It is perfect for learning new words in a new language.
Instead of linking a new word in Portuguese to the WORD in English, we link the new word to a SCENE that we create in our minds. It is maybe the most amazing tool for language learning that exists.
Need proof of the power of mnemonics? Well everyday millions of people use this system to learn a completely new language and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM before long becomes completely fluent in this new language.

Babies.
I know it's a cliché to say this but the best language learners in the world are babies. At a certain age they learn at an incredible speed and the reason I am mentioning them is because of the way that they use mnemonics.
How do babies learn words and language for the first time? Surely not by linking the new word to an existing word that they know, because they don’t know any other words. What babies do is directly link a new word to a feeling or experience, because they have nothing else to link the word to. When a baby wants a certain toy it will think about playing with this toy and all of the smells, sights and SOUNDS associated with playing with this toy - eventually the name of the toy will automatically appear in it’s head - Teddy!
Another even more natural and primitive example of babies using mnemonics is triggered by our natural instincts. When a baby feels thirsty it experiences a unique feeling of uncomfort - over time this FEELING becomes associated with the word drink because they will always be linked together in the mind.
We adults learning a new language automatically try to link the English word to the Portuguese word. This is not how the brain has evolved or what the brain is good at. Mental scenes and experiences are the brains natural way to remember things and this is exactly what a mnemonic is - a link between a scene and the new word.
Once I discovered the secret of mnemonics my Portuguese capabilities soared. I personally believe that mnemonics are the number one factor for enabling me to master the Brazilian Portuguese language.
A good mnemonic can not only make it easier to remember a word but it can even make it almost impossible for you to forget!

The more you go into detail in your mind the better the mnemonic will work. With the above example, for me it helped to imagine a famous bear, Winnie the Pooh drinking the honey. You need to think hard about the bear being thirsty and needing a drink. It sounds crazy but it is science.
