I'm not some spoiled kid. I've been working since I was fourteen.
I've worked hard my whole life for everything that I've ever had, and
that's how I've pretty much done everything in my life- on my own.
In fact, I didn't really even have a mentor or _anyone_ to look up to
for guidance except from the authors I read.
My point is, I'm in this for the freedom. The money's great- don't
get me wrong. But money buys you FREEDOM and _that_ means more to me,
than anything.
Freedom lets me travel whenever I want to. Some afternoons, I stop
working early and go on adventures with friends who are similarly
free. And sometimes, I will just sit back for a day and do "nothing"
just because that's what I feel like for that day. Especially those
days when there are just so many other exciting or interesting things
to do, or when I just feel like I need a day off from work. _That's_

I'm not a millionaire, but man, if I live the rest of my life like
this and _never_ become obscenely wealthy, you won't hear a single
complaint out of me any time soon. I know it sounds unbelievable, but
there are plenty of times I make enough money in one week to not have
to work the rest of the month. And some months, that's exactly what I
choose to do.
Things just keep getting better and better, and I look forward to
seeing where the road leads next for the first time in my life.
ISN'T IT FUNNY HOW MANY PEOPLE DON'T EVEN BELIEVE THAT IS POSSIBLE? I
DIDN'T BEFORE, BUT I DO NOW.
But things weren't _always_ this way- not by a long-shot. In fact,
there were plenty of times when things looked really bleak and
miserable.
Like many people with a lot of ambition and a healthy distaste for
arbitrary authority, I didn't exactly plug right in to the system and
do well for myself.
Imagine my surprise when I realized that no one wanted to give a good
job to a 20 year old recent college grad with a giant chip on his
shoulder!
And this continued on and on. I didn't stay long at any job because
no job was worth staying at for long. I did this for years, and the
more I jumped from crappy job to crappy job the more it seemed like it
would be impossible for me to move forward. I wasn't even thinking
about being able to find a job that I would actually _like_, I was
just thinking about getting a job that would pay more than minimum
wage. Neither were showing up for me.
I'm telling you all this because while most people will be quick to
tell you, It's not _what_ you know, it's _who_ you know, the greatest
lesson I've learned, is that this is _completely_ wrong.

As you'll see in just a moment.
Within a few years I was contemplating filing bankruptcy and I felt
so burned out and depressed from being run through the 9-5 grind that
I was _convinced_ I was going to have a total nervous breakdown.
But then, after years of nothing but bad breaks, and making one wrong
decision after another... a few things started to go my way and my
life slowly began turning around. For the first time ever, I began
seeing that life just didn't have to be so hard.
My personal life _finally_ started coming together. Instead of
constantly having to handle things in "survival mode" and running

to sit back and think, with a _clear mind_, about what I _really_

And what I wanted to do was work for myself with skills that I
enjoyed and wanted to further develop, that would give me the freedom
to work where and when I wanted. And I wanted to be the absolute best
I could be at this, and I wanted to share my lessons with other
people.
In the beginning, it wasn't exactly easy, but it seemed like this was
a perfect fit for me, my skill sets and personality. I had done sales
jobs before, I had done customer service jobs before, and I had spent
a lot of time reading about business and marketing and psychology and
all that. Originally, I thought about these things just to try and get
better jobs and to do better at the crappy 9-5s that I was able to
hustle my way into.
BUT IT TURNED OUT THAT ALL THAT READING SET ME UP TO BE A GREAT
FREELANCER!
I got into freelancing randomly. I was buying some freelance work for
a personal project that I was developing and realized that I was at
least as good as all these people who were bidding on my project. I
realized that freelancing was something that I could probably do, so I
decided to give it a shot.
So I created a profile on a freelance site and started to bid on
jobs. I started to generate interest and even got some clients. And
more and more clients seemed to just be powerfully attracted to me. At
first they were attracted to my energy and enthusiasm. Then by the
results of my work and the great feedback I was receiving. I started
to experiment with new ways to succeed as a freelancer and to get
more, better paying jobs. I developed some excellent strategic advice
that worked like a charm for anyone who tried it out.
Then after I had already created a full-time income from my work I
began to get referrals from my best clients. Unsurprisingly, the
people they referred me to ended up looking like they were great
clients too.
But that's just not how I operate. See, I know THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS DO

because I was stuck for so long in one place, but I refused to stay in
one place with one level of client for too long.
The way I see it, in traditional employment you are held down. You
are put in a place and you better stay in that place. The only way to
grow is to fit into a different little box that the company might
offer you if you're lucky. Being penned in like that just builds this
fire, this burning desire within you to want to burst out and do
better and better and to become bigger and bigger than their system
will ever let you become!
Is that something you've ever felt before?

And so, unlike lots of people for "who you know" short-cuts, I
decided to differentiate myself another way. I wanted to build a solid
and ever growing reputation on my own, and I wanted to direct what my
business meant and what it provided for me.

always seek out referrals, I decided to follow a different path
focused on the following principles.
1. PROVIDE GREAT CONTENT. As I explain in "The Fortunate Freelancer"
you have to be able to deliver high quality work. The highest quality
work, and you want to keep getting better and better at what you are
offering. I offer a lot of strategies and shortcus that really help
when you are developing your freelance career from scratch, but none
of them are going to get you anywhere if you aren't able to deliver
great content and be a professional person to work with.
It doesn't matter what niche or skill you are marketing with your
freelance work- whether you are a write, a graphic designer or a tax
consultant. You need to focus on providing the best product that you
possibly can. I _consistently_ offer top-quality work and service, no
matter which of my niches I am working in and no matter what the
project asks. In fact, in my manual I explain how to continuously
improve and pick up new skills and talents, and how to deepdn the
skills and talents you already have. I also explain the hidden things
that contribute to getting jobs that have nothing to do with the
quality of your work. You need to maximize these aspects as well if
you are going to consistenly get work and how to present your good

want to continue to work with them.

full-time income freelancing is as easy as tripping over your own

something, only to find out you've been set up and taken advantage of.
Sometimes providers will even have the gall to say that they would
have done a better job if they were paid more- despite the fact that
they set their own price and make their promises based on that price!
I hate that, and so do my clients who hire me because I NEVER do
that. I approach things differently. I approach my whole freelance
career with the mindset of "Unless I over deliver on what I'm doing
for you right NOW, you might not give me good feedback, you might not
want to work with me again, you might not have anything good to say
about me, and my whole career and livelihood might fall apart!"
You see, people aren't stupid. Buyers are STARVING for fresh new
ideas, good work and great service. And when you give these things to
them and keep giving them better with each new client, than you will
never have problems getting clients. You will be shocked at how many
clients think you are the best thing since sliced bread simply because
you did what you said you were going to do! WHEN YOU'RE GIVING PEOPLE
WHAT YOU PROMISE THEM, YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THINGS LIKE TRICKERY TO
STAY IN BUSINESS!
And you know what?
CLIENTS LOVE THIS APPROACH!

Maybe I'm the exception to the freelancing rule, but I just plain
believe that if somone is investing in you that you pay them back with
dividends. That's why I go out of my way to make sure that my clients
are CRAZY about working with me. And if you look at the numbers, than
it's clear that my system does something right.
3. FINALLY, I AM AS REAL AND HONEST AS THEY COME. One of the things I
hated about working for other companies was all the politics and lying
that is just accepted if not outright encouraged. I couldn't believe
what I was asked to do when I was working retail, and I couldn't
believe what was going on behind the scenes of the more seemingly
noble places that I worked at. I am an honest person, and I believe in
treating my clients and buyers with honesty.
This means not always telling them what they want to hear, but
sometimes telling them what they need to hear. This means telling the
truth, even when it puts you in a bad light because you've messed up!
It means being straightfoward in your communication with your buyers.
Now, I do recommend some tips and tricks that might seem a little less
moral when it comes to getting started and getting your first set of
jobs. But these have NOTHING to do with being dishonest, and in my
manual I provide you with a few sneakier tactics but I ALWAYS provide
you with an upfront strategy that will probably work EVEN BETTER. And
even the sneakier strategies are nothing more than means to getting
jobs where you will then deliver great work with the utmost integrity
in your communication.

When it comes down to it, I'm not some "guru" who pretends that I've
never made a mistake and that I don't continue to make mistakes. I

the time. Well, maybe some peopl are, but I'm not and never have been.
In fact, I failed miserably the first time that I freelanced! I got

successful freelancer?
Well, as mentioned before I believe in being honest, even when the
truth is less than sterling.
Second, that failure was what paved the way for my success. I didn't
quit forever. I failed and I LEARNED from that failure.
In fact, I failed the second time I tried freelancing, though not
quite so spectacularly.
It took me three times to really figure out what worked in the real
world and for the long term. I also learned what wasn't going to work
from first hand experience.
Who would you rather learn from, someone who never failed, who never
faced adversity, who doesn't know the lows and what will take you
there?

is to make and who can teach you how to avoid those mistakes?
