It is the male’s sperm that is responsible for determining the sex of the baby.
A baby boy will be born if a sperm carrying a Y-chromosome (boy sperm) fertilises the egg and a baby girl will be born if a sperm carrying an X-chromosome (girl sperm) fertilises the egg.
All eggs carry an X-chromosome. So a girl results from having 2 X-chromosomes (one from the egg and one from the sperm) and a boy is born if they receive the Y-chromosome from their father (they also get the X-chromosome from their mother).
In semen, approximately 50% of the sperm has an X-chromosome and 50% has a Y-chromosome, resulting in an equal chance of having a boy or a girl.
There are, however, several things you can do to change these odds to favour the conception of a boy or girl if you would like to choose the gender of your baby.
So you are probably thinking that sex determination is all up to the father, but that is not true. It is actually the mother that has the most control in choosing the sex of the baby. This is because the sperm have to survive through the harsh conditions in the females reproductive tract and the female can control these conditions as well as controlling when the sperm arrives in relation to her menstrual cycle. .
As I mentioned above the boy and girl sperm appear to have very different characteristics.
The girl sperm are bigger, stronger and more robust so they are more resilient to things such as acidity and heat. They are, however, slower so can take a longer time to reach the egg.
Boy sperm are smaller and more fragile, but they are faster so can reach the egg more quickly if they survive for long enough.
You can use this information to influence the likely gender of your baby by altering the conditions that the sperm are exposed to and control which is more likely to reach the egg first.
Girl sperm (X-Chromosome)
Slower Bigger Stronger and more resilient
Boy sperm (Y-Chromosome)
Faster Smaller Weaker and less resilient Sensitive to heat
