For me, I first found an interest in this relaxing and extremely
rewarding past–time many years ago as a teenager, and I have been
hooked on it for the past 40 years…. and I am still as passionate
about it as I ever was.Let me explain….
As a teenager I just loved growing plants, playing with animals I did
a couple of diplomas and a degree in horticulture just to keep me on
route .
Then I went out to work (sort of – more like fun). I worked for 10
or so years as a research and extension horticulturist with the
Queensland Dept. of Primary Industries (in Australia) working with
commercial horticultural growers, smallholders and home gardeners.
About his time World Bank then offered me employment overseas as an
agricultural adviser. I actually accepted another offer and soon went
overseas to work-in my chosen field of expertise.
Well,… to cut a long and interesting story short, I ended up
spending almost 20 years overseas FULL TIME with my family and wife.
I worked with a range of international development agencies such as
AusAID, UNDP, United Nations - IFAD and FAO to name a few.
When overseas I worked in a good number of countries and almost
entirely with smallholder farmers and village home gardens. My job was
to work with them to show them how to best grow the vegetables and
other crops. (and often in small spaces)
I WORKED MOSTLY IN SE ASIA, WHERE HERBS (AND VEGGIES) WERE AN
IMPORTANT PART OF THEIR FOODS AND COOKING.
AND LET ME TELL YOU; the areas that many of these farmers/households
had available to grow their herbs and veggies in were SMALL … .
especially at the small home garden & backyard level.
I'LL BET YOU CAN GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. Yep, in the mid 1990's I
came back to back to civilization in Australia…..AND I just HAD to
do the home garden veggies and herbs thing for me and the FAMILY…. I
just couldn't help myself.
And that was great for a while when I had a large backyard. Just dig
up the soil, make a few beds, and add some manure, compost, mineral
fertilizers and lime. … And bingo, veggies and herbs everywhere,
anytime... for everyone.
WELL, THEN IT HAPPENED. We had to move house and I no longer had
access to a "large" backyard for gardening. - So, I started "gardening
in small spaces".
AND,…. this meant not having good soil, or PLENTY OF SPACE LIKE I
WAS USED TO.
SO, I had to improvise dramatically with space, and dramatically
improve what little soil I had available I actually had to buy potting
mixture and soil, which was really foreign to me. But, I must admit I
did scrimp a bit on the quality of the mixture, trying to do it as
economically as possible.
WELL, the results were still good BUT NOT A GOOD AS BEFORE, OR as
predictable…. And over time the amount and quality of the fresh
herbs and veggies was NOT as good as I hoped…
AND THIS UPSET ME NO end.. because I thought I knew all that was
really needed to know
THEN IT HIT ME.. I had to find better ways to do it in small
spaces… or better still, the BEST ways possible..... So I started
looking around, researching and the like
I wanted see if there were better ways to do things these days (after
all I had been trying to do things the old and proven ways, and as
economical as possible). BUT IT WAS NOT WORKING SO WELL IN MY SMALL
SPACES.
SO I DECIDED ON A TWO-PRONGED APPROACH
* CHECK OUT WHAT IS AVAILABLE THESE DAYS in terms of pots etc etc
and
* FIND OUT WHAT’S BEEN WRITTEN LATELY on “small spaces herbs and
vegetable growing” to help me better grow herbs and veggies in my
own small spaces at my home WELL, I THOROUGHLY CHECKED OUT THE LOCAL
GARDEN CENTERS AND LARGE HARDWARE GARDENING STORES AND LOCAL
NURSERIES. Luckily we have few really great ones locally with really
switched on service staff with horticultural backgrounds.
AND then I decided to check out the internet and the book shops to
see if there were some new concepts, ways and methods of doing things
better (FOR GROWING HERBS AND VEGETABLES IN SMALL SPACES AT HOME).
* started reading all the information I could find, especially at our
very good local library
* I even used their very extensive inter-library loans facilities to
get in any good books I could locate.. CERTAINLY CHEAPER THAN BUYING
THE BOOKS.…..
And I even bought a few e-Books on line (because they were
considerably cheaper than paper books). BUT, in most cases I sent them
back in disgust. They all lacked substance, and didn’t really tell
the reader anything worthwhile.
I EVEN LOOKED A GARDEN CLUBS AND COMMUNITY GARDENS. Great concept
which I really liked….They were great but many of them were also
looking for the same answers as I was.
THERE REALLY WAS A LOT OF INFORMATION OUT THERE BUT MAINLY IN HARD
COPY BOOKS…AND OFTEN VERY SPREAD OUT AND OFTEN EXPENSIVE TO GET HOLD
OF.
I ACTUALLY WENT INTO INFORMATION OVERLOAD FROM SO MUCH AVAILABLE
INFORMATION !!!
AND HERE’S WHAT I DISCOVERED FROM ALL MY SEARCHING
* There are plenty of lovely books out there for the large home
garden where space or soil is not limiting.
* There appears to be plenty of information on community gardens and
how to do it,.. But again, like above, mostly on the large
backyard-garden theme – not really specifically targeting small
spaces as you’d expect.
* THERE ARE SOME LOVELY STATELY (LARGE) herb gardens in estates and
botanical gardens.- great if that’s what you’re after.
* There is plenty of information about growing herbs on window sills
and in “stacked planters” in courtyards and even indoors in those
fancy light set-ups- VERY expensive; BUT MORE AS A PLAY THING RATHER
THAN BEING SERIOUS.
* There are many really beautiful well-illustrated herbs books (BUT
EXPENSIVE) on ALL herbs known to man, with a lots AND BASICALLY TELL
YOU NOTHING, EXCEPT GENERALIZATIONS AND MOTHERHOOD STATEMENTS...
* There are a few very good general garden books, with pages and
pages with “when to plant” guides and “plant spacing” tables..
Some are really great references but still not good enough if you want
a “do it now guide” AND an “understanding how .
AND ESPECIALLY NOT FOR THE “GROWING IN SMALL SPACES” ASPECT THAT I
WAS LOOKING FOR.
Now don’t get me wrong. It’s not that there is not enough good
information out there, especially for the large home garden, there is,
BUT TOO MUCH AND TOO SPREAD OUT.
There was just virtually nothing worthwhile for the home garden
growing of herbs and veggies in small spaces AND THAT REALLY WORRIED
me because if I, Mr. Horticulturist himself, was having problems
finding the information, then others must be also.So guess what I just
HAD to do…Yep, and it’s this e-Book that I’m now talking about
