. . . Effective communication with your child is the most important
key to preventing an abduction.
Children may not understand the term STRANGER. Most children will
describe a stranger as someone who is ugly or mean. They don't
consider nice looking people or friendly people as strangers.
History has shown us that most children are actually taken by someone
they are familiar with. If someone talks to a child or is even around
them once, that person loses their stranger status. A clear, calm, and
reassuring message about situations and actions to lookout for is
easier for a child to understand than a particular profile or image of
a stranger.
Here are some scenarios to discuss with your child.
* If someone in a vehicle is following you, stay away from him or
her and run in the opposite direction.
* Adults should not be asking children for help. They should be
asking other adults to help them.
* If someone is following you on foot, run away as fast as you can.
Go to a trusted neighbors/friends or even in to a store and tell the
clerk.
* If someone tries to grab you, make a scene to get attention and
make every effort to get away by kicking, screaming, and resisting.
* If someone wants to take your picture, tell them NO. Never talk to
strangers!
* Adults should be asking you for directions or asking you to help
look for something like a “lost puppy.”
* If someone tells you that your mother or father is in trouble and
he or she will take you to them, do not go with them. Go to your
parents on your own.
* If you are in a public place and you get separated from your
parents or guardian, don’t wander around looking for them. Go to the
nearest uniformed police officer or a store employee with a name tag.
* You should not get into a vehicle and go anywhere with any person
unless your parent has told you it is okay to do so on that day.
* You have the right to say NO to someone who tries to take you
somewhere, touch you, or makes you feel scared, uncomfortable, or
confused in any way.
* There is safety in numbers.You should always take a friend with
you when you go places or stay with your group.
* No one should touch you on parts of your body that would be
covered by a bathing suit, nor should you touch anyone else in those
areas. Your body is special and private.
* Adults should not ask a child to keep a secret or not tell their
parents about anything.
We have to teach our children the basics from an early age. They
should know the following information minimum:
* Their full name
* Their parents first and last names
* Parents cell phone number
* Try to have a plan if you get separated
* Make sure your child knows how and when to dial 911

PARENT SAFETY EBOOK
Most people have had that heart stopping moment where we look down
and realize our child is not where we think they are. It happens for
many reasons. You could be talking to someone you bumped in to at the
mall and your child wanders away to the pet store or simply kept
walking because they didn’t realized you stopped to talk. Children
are curious by nature and are easily distracted by anything of
interest. Though we tell them to stay here, sometimes, they wander off
simply because they have to investigate something new to them. Simply
put, children get lost for a multitude of reasons.
The difference between a lost child and an abducted child is that the
child was not coaxed or forced away if they are lost. To most, the
suggestions below seem to be common sense but, again, we all need to
be reminded of the basics at times.
The Keeping Kids Safe, A Parents Commonsense Guide will cover things
that you should be aware of as a parent to insure that your child is
not in danger and things that you can do in a variety of common

WHAT TO TELL YOUR CHILD TO DO IF THEY ARE LOST
If your child becomes lost or disoriented, they should know a few
basic rules. These rules make it easier for you to locate them. If
they keep wandering it usually results in the child being harder to
find for us. Teach your child these few basics for when they are lost.
* Do not leave the structure, store or area when they realize they
are lost.
* Find a police office, security guard or someone working a register
in a store.
* Ask that person to call Mommy or Daddy on their cell phone. If no
answer, call the Police.
* Stay put! Have them stay with that person until they are found or
a member of Law Enforcement arrives.
* Every effort we make in prevention sends a message to predators
world wide that their behavior will not be tolerated. We must educate
and prepare our children to lower the missing child statistics.
PREVENTION BEGINS WITH EDUCATION
The My Childs Safety Program we have designed is an excellent tool
for when your child is missing or abducted. Our hopes and dreams are
that no child is ever abducted or lost. I don’t want our system to
be used if possible. It is a wonderful tool but not a tool we want to
see called to action on a daily basis if possible. In order to
accomplish this goal we have to start with prevention. Prevention
begins with education. I know that you are a good parent simply

we must educate our children on some basics.
ABDUCTION PREVENTION
Strangers
We must start by teaching our children the meaning of the word
stranger. The word stranger is defined as: A person with whom one has
had no personal acquaintance with. We can’t expect our children to
understand the meaning by reading the definition. It must be explained
to our children that a stranger is someone that they don’t know.
There is no reason that a stranger should interact with a child with
out your permission. Make sure that your child knows not to accept a
ride or help a stranger find anything or accept candy or anything else
from a stranger.
* Teach your child to shout for attention if a stranger is
persistent for their attention or gets to close to them.
* Designate boundaries for your children
As parents we have a much better and more experienced eye for where
we should go or where we should not. We have to limit the distance
between us and our children. It is silly for me to think that we are
all going to hover over our children 24 hours a day. We must however
provide them with boundaries. Use markers such as a neighbors house or
mailbox or even a street sign. Our younger children should never be
out of shouting distance from us and we should be able to hear them if
they cry out in need. For children that are a little older we have to
make them aware of the areas in the neighborhood to avoid.
