Reluctant Writers

As a parent, it’s natural to want to be there to help and guide your child; to feel confident that his education is both well rounded and fun, and that what he is learning in his first few years will set him up for a bright future.

So what do you do if he is reluctant to learn – if he hates to write, and simply refuses to pick up a pen?

Seeing your child struggle or avoid writing can be both upsetting and extremely frustrating for everyone involved. When worried parents start nagging a child to sit down and write, inevitably it ends in a battle of wills…arguments, tantrums or long periods of sulky silence. Worse still, it results in an incredibly stressful atmosphere, which is possibly the greatest problem of all.

Reluctant learners do not respond well to stress, in fact, stress only serves to aggravate the situation, and put further pressure on an already unhappy child.

When the stress is removed you start getting a very different response.

Why does my child refuse to write?

Children who have difficulty translating their thoughts onto paper often see their inability to write as just one more reflection of their own shortcomings. They worry that their bad spelling, poor punctuation, untidy handwriting and lack of creative ideas will just serve to highlight the sense of failure they already feel.

So to avoid facing further humiliation and judgmental comments from teachers, parents and peers, they simply refuse to write.

How can I help my child?

So how do you give your child the encouragement he needs to convince him that his words can interest and inspire him, and in turn lead the way to greater things?

While there are already plenty of writing resources available both on and offline, they do tend to have one thing in common – they concentrate on ‘What’ you need to teach. But it’s not the ‘What’ that determines success in helping a child; it’s the ‘How’:

‘How’ resources are used and ‘how’ parents interact with their children whilst they are teaching them is critical.

How To Get Your Child To Write uses a unique approach. By concentrating on the ‘How to’ as much as the ‘What’, it helps to prepare the parent, as well as teach the child.

Using the simple strategies set out in this manual, you will discover how to tackle the underlying learning problems your child faces, without overwhelming him or causing him any stress. By helping you to approach the subject of his writing in a calm, structured way, this manual will transform your reluctant learner into a self-motivated, switched on writer.

How To Get Your Child To Write will explain how to help and motivate him to learn by providing a calm and stress-free atmosphere in which to build up his trust and offer unconditional support.

When his confidence has grown and his interest has been sparked and engaged, not only will he have adopted a more positive attitude towards learning, he will also want to set and achieve some mini-goals of his own – skills that will serve him well in all areas of his life.

As you will see, when children achieve their own goals, motivation is no longer a problem.

How can I help you?

Having trained as a literacy specialist teacher with the highly acclaimed West Australian Getting-it-Right Program, I understand why reluctant writers think and feel the way they do. I have also studied the various ways in which it is possible to help children change their negative responses into positive ones, and in doing so, build up their confidence and self esteem.

A large part of my work involves the introduction of curriculum change in schools. I provide professional learning for teachers to put more effective strategies in place and improve the way that literacy is taught.

The combination of positive feedback from teachers and dramatic results achieved in classrooms inspires me to show parents how they can help their reluctant learners at home.

But you certainly don’t need to be a trained teacher to make a difference in your child’s life. How To Get Your Child To Write will take you through the step-by-step process, explaining the psychology behind the problems you are dealing with and showing you what needs to be done to improve your child’s writing.

Not only will How To Get Your Child To Write help your child to explore the purposes for writing, but the activities included in the manual, many of which require some sort of discussion or research, will also show him that writing can actually be fun.

Changing your child’s attitude to writing is a lot easier than you might think – it just requires a little bit of patience and love, and the right information to show you ‘How’ to do it.

How To Get Your Child To Write is a manual that offers clear, step-by-step instructions to help you help your child every day. The easy to read, concise information tackles the underlying problem head on.

It teaches you how to understand and analyse your child’s writing, regardless of how much he may or may not be producing at the moment. This helps you to recognise what stage he is at, and then guides you through to the next level.

It teaches you how to set your child appropriate and achievable mini-goals, enabling you to make sure your child is taking the correct steps forward in writing for his needs AND learning important life skills.

It teaches your child how to choose, set and achieve his own goals. He is supported and encouraged towards becoming an independent learner.

It provides appropriate activities to help stretch your child’s abilities and encourage him to reach his goals. He will learn to discuss the best way to reach the goals he has set himself.

How To Get Your Child To Write allows you and your child to enjoy the experience together. This makes learning fun.
