How A Stressed Out Engineer Learned To Meditate

I'm an engineer. Engineers are conservative, arrogant, know-it-alls. I know. I was.

For years I sneered at anything that wasn't technical, or rational, or clearly defined and understood. That included such airy-fairy things as massage, astrology and meditation.

One consequence of being a conservative, arrogant, know-it-all engineer is a lot of stress. The demands of design schedules and unexpected problems are very stressful. Anything that doesn't go according to plan is a personal setback. It means I failed in some way. A real engineer would make it right, and do it NOW!

Most of this pressure was self-imposed. I wrapped my self-worth up in my job. Failing at part of my job meant I was a bad person. Small failures are a normal part of any design project. So there were lots of times I thought I was a failure. When this kind of thinking is repeated over and over, the result is great internal stress.

For me, that stress resulted in twisted up, knotted muscles. My back, shoulders and neck ached most of the time. It affected my sleep - I didn't get any.

The solution came from another engineer. It was a comment about how good a massage felt. Hearing this recommendation from another engineer was a tipping point for me. So I made an appointment.

The massage therapist asked what was bothering me. She asked where the sore and tight spots were. Then she went to work on me.

Whoa!

At first it felt pretty good, but then she got into some of those knotted up muscles. Having someone push and knead on a mass of tightened muscle tissue is a special kind of pain. There were moments when I didn't think I could take it anymore.

Just when I thought it was intolerable, something remarkable happened. The muscle loosened up and relaxed. The pain subsided. It started to feel good again.

At the end, I was so relaxed that I nearly fell asleep. In less than an hour, one massage therapist had removed enough stored stress to fill a 55-gallon barrel, and I felt wonderful.

OK, I know what you are thinking: 'So what if a massage feels good. Most people already know that. This bozo is just slow. What does this have to do with meditation?' I'm almost there. Just hang on.

It Takes More Than Massage

So massage was a big help to me, but it wasn't a magic bullet. One session is not enough. I had to go back, because there was still plenty more stress hiding somewhere. A couple days after the massage, my muscles tightened up again. I was still accumulating stress.

Fast forward a year. I was in an employer-required, week-long class called People Skills. It was supposed to teach us all how to communicate and get along better in the work-place. Big freakin' deal. Still arrogant.

On Monday, at the end of the morning session, the teacher suggested we all do an exercise together. I rolled my eyes. Oh, brother.

All we did was sit in our chairs. He turned out most of the lights and asked us to close our eyes. Then he started talking to us in a slow, low voice. Tighten up and relax your feet ... breathe in as you tense the muscles ... breathe out as you relax. Breathe in and tighten up your legs ...

By the time we finished, I was totally relaxed. Even though I was getting regular massages, I still had some knots that came back quickly. But in this relaxed condition, I felt great! It was wonderful to just sit there and feel completely at ease. No pain. No tightness. No stress. It was just warm and good all over. Then something totally unexpected happened.

As I just sat there enjoying the feeling of complete relaxation, my entire awareness changed. I felt like I was at the center of some big buzzing or tingling something. I felt almost weightless, like I was floating.

The tingling/buzzing sensation flowed through all parts of my body. For once, I wasn't analyzing everything, I was just an observer. Then I went somewhere else.

Some time later, I heard a voice. It was the teacher's. I slowly came back and I was again sitting in a chair, very relaxed. I was opening my eyes. Everyone else was stirring.

I didn't realize it then, but I had entered a meditative state. It was the next step beyond simple relaxation. My mind had emptied, and my perceptions had been altered. I had achieved relaxing meditation.

This is what meditation is all about. And the cause is well known. The normally chaotic brain waves had all synchronized.

Later, I had the flash that maybe the experience was related to meditation. I did some research and discovered that it was indeed meditation, which is just one of several measurable brain states. As an engineer, this was something I could appreciate. Meditation was no longer airy-fairy. It was real, and it had a scientific basis.

Meditation Works

You see how easy it can be to reach a meditative state. Anyone can do this. But what good is it?

For one, it nearly eliminated my stress. Once I started meditating regularly, my job seemed a lot more fun. I became an engineer because I like to solve problems. Meditation helped me realize that all the unexpected problems are normal and are just more opportunities to have fun.

Once my attitude changed, I became more creative. Seeing problems as opportunities is a creative shift. Solving a problem is a creative act. I was viewing my job differently because my brain was different. My brain was different because I was meditating.

Over the next year, I noticed a change in my health. I felt better. I had more energy. I was sleeping again. I wasn't getting sick. Most years, I could expect to get 3 or 4 colds. With regular meditation, I might get only one per year.

Since I was having more fun, seeing problems differently, I was easier to get along with. I wasn't nearly so arrogant. There was no need for it.

So let's see - no stress, healthier, having more fun, more creative, more energetic, easy-going. Does that sound like your life? Would you like that for yourself?
