The Unvarnished Recounting Of My Personal Experience In OVERCOMING
Most Of The Effects Of BRAIN INJURY

“AGAINST THE ODDS.
3YRS + & STILL IMPROVING
YOU CAN TOO!”

AMAZING! - PEOPLE CAN’T BELIEVE THAT ONLY 3 YEARS AGO I SUFFERED
VERY SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE INVOLVING POST TRAUMATIC AMNESIA OF 23 DAYS.

THEY SAY I APPEAR SO NORMAL!

APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEPTIVE!!!!

THE INVISIBLE CURSE - Traumatic Brain Injury - everything is not
always as it seems.  A long time after the physical injuries heal
some repercussions of a Brain Injury linger on, invisible to the naked
eye.

*

“OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND”
*

People don’t see an injury and presume there is nothing wrong.
*

Often what sufferers say and do is misconstrued as a character
defect.
*

This can make them feel inferior - or worse.
*

This is especially so when the sufferer can remember what life was
like before.

THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN BY A BRAIN INJURED PERSON, IN THE HOPE OF
IMPROVING UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED BY THOSE WHO
ARE RECOVERING FROM BRAIN INJURY. THE INTENTION IS TO HOPEFULLY GIVE
THOSE CLOSEST TO THE ONE WITH THE DAMAGED / SHORT-CIRCUITED BRAIN SOME
UNDERSTANDING AND INSIGHT INTO THE CONVOLUTED “LOGIC” OR TOTAL
LACK THEREOF WITH WHICH THEY HAVE TO LIVE.

I CERTAINLY WISH I HAD BEEN ABLE TO ACCESS THE THOUGHTS OF SOMEONE
ELSE WITH SIMILAR LACK OF REASON WHEN I WAS GRAPPLING WITH BOTH THE
POSSIBILITY OF INSANITY AND THE UNCERTAINTY OF RECOVERY.

If it is possible to encourage those with Brain Injury to extend
themselves (CAREFULLY) to achieve the best they will become capable
of, with practice, then this will be doubly worthwhile.

Ten million people world wide will suffer the tragedy of a TBI each
year.

In the U.S. it’s estimated to be 1.7 million people.  TBI is a
contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths.

In Australia, it is by far the leading cause of disability and death
in young people.

_EXCERPT FROM:__    “RECOVERY THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE” _
_By Trevor Short    (Synapse Journal bia.org   Sept. 2009)_

The sense of achievement one feels on realising an ability, or even
just a word, is not necessarily forgotten is like waking up from a
coma to realise you are not actually dead.
_The downside of this “born again” epiphany can be the desire to
stop where one is and enjoy the life one can have with limited
faculties (how could I resist using the forgotten word epiphany which
only came to me because I was forcing the issue?)_
_It scares me the number of times I have actually said “I can
survive with what I have. I don’t want to keep getting better if the
cost is constant fatigue.”_
_It is now over 2yrs and 3 months since my injury and for the last
few months the acceleration of learning and recovery of abilities and
understanding of concepts can only be described as exponential._

COMMENT:
IT WAS GREAT TO READ ABOUT HOW FAR YOU HAVE COME IN YOUR RECOVERY. SO
OFTEN WE HEAR ABOUT HOW FATIGUE GOES HAND IN HAND WITH THE EFFORT PUT
INTO THE RECOVERY PROCESS.

I THINK IT EXPLAINS VERY WELL JUST HOW TOUGH THINGS CAN GET AND HELPS
FAMILY MEMBERS BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR LOVED ONE WITH A BRAIN INJURY.

EXCERPT FROM:       “AM I CRAZY?”      BY TREVOR
SHORT
(Synapse Journal bia.org   Dec. 2009)

Even when one is convinced that the after affects of brain injury
have been overcome, there is a dark spectre lurking in the background.
It is nearly three years since my TBI in a car smash, and my wife and
I still have to deal with the effects of confusion, frustration and
negative emotions.  These can be triggered by something as simple as
the inability to think and remember in any form of order. The idea that
I am trying to express is how confusion can lead to depression, which
might lead to mental illness.  Or, is the inability to think
logically a cause or a product of mental illness?
The inability to finish a thought process can definitely make one
question one’s sanity.

COMMENT:
YOUR ARTICLE DESCRIBES SO WELL THE COGNITIVE DIFFICULTIES FACED AFTER
A BRAIN INJURY AND HOW THIS TIES IN WITH DEPRESSION – THANK YOU.

Unbelievably it’s now over 3yrs and I am still recovering and
regaining more of my old self.
