thought that I was set for the rest of my life. Then Google came out
with a new rule that says you cannot bid on trademarked names, which
was about 95% of all the keywords I was bidding on.
I ignored it and kept going. What I was doing was working, thinking
it was a shallow threat. One day I woke up to check my CJ.com
affiliate account to see if my $17,000 had been wired to my bank
account yet and I found that $16,450 of my commissions were "taken
back"!
I Lost Everything Over Night!
After spending hours on the phone arguing with the network they said
that they came to that conclusion since I was bidding on trademarked
terms and all my lead commissions were void.
They literally "jacked" all of my sales based off of the information
that Google provided to them. I said "If you're going to take all of
my commissions then give me all the leads that I generated for you
back!". They said it doesn't work that way. I literally felt violated!
One minute I'm breezing along making $20,000 plus a month with a
family to feed and the next month I'm instantly out of business making
$0, thanks to good old Google.
This experience was a complete bust but it taught me early on that
getting targeted traffic was the key ingredient to achieving true
wealth online. Everything else was secondary...Everything! I don't
care what the gurus tell you.
Everyone always says content is king, but from my experience
targeted traffic is king because without the traffic there is no one
there to read the content.
I tried to rebuild and get back to the level that I was going with
pay per click but I kept running into roadblocks that Google would
throw at me every three months. Everything from my quality score, to
having too many keywords in my groups, to the latest and greatest
Google policy on landing pages.
Every time I Thought
I Was Getting Traction,
Google Would " Slap" Me!
It was like every time I perfected the system and made it
profitable, Google would come along and slap down my best campaigns!
( sure you've heard of the many Google slaps that have happened over
the years... I was a victim to all of them)
This put a bad taste in my mouth and I eventually said 'Forget pay
per click!"
I Finally Said Forget Google and I Moved
Onto Article Writing... Big Mistake!
So I moved on to article writing. I found a very interesting
document online called BUM marketing and was fascinated by the fact
that this guy was able to get targeted traffic for free (or at least I
thought it was free), and not even have to worry about pay per click
policies.
So I really committed to this system. I wanted to see what it would
really take to get back to my level of income that I was earning,
except this time using uniquely written articles. I figured, to start
generating traffic that I was accustomed to getting with PPC, I would
have to have at least 500 unique articles written and submitted to the
article directories, that I have learned about.
$5,000 In Articles Written...
Down The DRAIN!
Long story short, I found myself paying $4 per article which came
out to about $2000 and the articles sounded like they had been written
by someone from a Third World country (actually they had). They were
absolute garbage. Luckily I only had to put $1000 down to get the job
started but I was still out one grand with the so-called free
marketing tactic.
I've actually had someone else rewrite the articles and they charge
me seven dollars an article but this time it was a native US person
and the articles were fantastic! Sure it cost me another $3500 but I
felt this time it was worth it I would finally be back to my $20,000
in no time flat.
BOY, WAS I IN FOR A SURPRISE!
My articles were submitted and did nothing for about 15 days. After
that a few of them started to rank well in the search engines and
eventually led to commissions, but a lot of them didn't. This is all
followed by a lot of fluctuation ( also known as Google dancing).
Overall this method wasn't bad, I did make some money, but it was
nowhere near what I was doing before with paid advertising. After all,
there was nothing like finding a niche, logging in, buying keywords,
and start getting traffic and making commissions all in the same
night!
There's No Such Thing As Free Traffic
I learned another good lesson about traffic, "there is no such thing
as free traffic!"
Sure it may be free for you to do, but it does require time and
energy and effort. Your time is money. And if you want someone else to
do it for you, it's still going to cost you. So I figured if I'm going
to pay for it anyway I might as well apply it to something that offers
more consistent and measurable results.
Over the next four months I went on to try every page and free
traffic strategy out there!
I tried Co-registration ( and lost an arm and a leg), I tried using
twitter and other social networks, I tried paying people to do
twittering for me and social networks, I ran e-zine ads, I even
ventured into e-mail marketing. All these things were effective to a
certain extent, but I still couldn't get back to the glory days that I
was having with pay per click ( before it all went to pot).
I Was a Phone Call Away From Going Back to Corporate America
and Working a Day Job!
I was ready to throw in the towel and start looking at ways to get
back into corporate America. I had about $11,000 left to play with and
was thinking hard whether I should dump it all into PPC and try to

PPV MARKETING ANYWAY?
