How to: Install a car alarm

A General guide for beginners

------

A Guide, Checklist, and list of resources

Already have a car alarm or remote start system?

Shops will charge you almost DOUBLE for installation if you did not purchase your alarm from them.   Install it yourself!

All you need is:
Your car alarm, remote start, or keyless entry system Soldering iron, and solder electrical tape and heatshrink tubing Wire cutters and strippers Digital multimeter Socket set for vehicle disassembly Our instant download guide

Disassembly varies by vehicle

A Series of Screws and clips Access underdash, steering column, and kick panel areas 75% of your install will be performed in these few places Use Philips, torx, and some sockets, usually 7-10mm

If you have little to no experience installing car alarms, DO NOT try to install it without first reading our install guide

Save money

Shops are getting more expensive, and will upsell you on things that should be a standard connection.

Know what changes were made to your vehicle

Often when mistakes are made, installers will try to hide them, for the sake of not getting in trouble. This can cause you major problems in the future.

Know who is working on your vehicle

You run the risk of letting a person with little know how, or even a thief working on your vehicle! Avoid people who do not care about your car, and especially people who are in the position to secretly get one over on you.

Perform the install on your time

Dropping your vehicle off for hours is not very convienient for anyone. Not to mention if you need to bring it back for repair or adjustment.

Correct issues on your friends vehicles

Once you have a basic understanding on how these systems work, you will be able to easily fix other installers simple mistakes.

I wouldn't take MY car to ANYONE
There are many risks involved in taking your car to a shop.

You run the risk of the disgruntled installer working on your beloved vehicle. Some of these guys are have 2 or 3 of these to do a day. They are under pressure to simply "get it done", out of the way. Being rushed causes error, and you dont want someone who doesnt care about your vehicle working on your vehicle.

You could be setting yourself up to be robbed. Almost every shop that I worked at had horror stories about the installer who put in a car alarm, just to keep all the information about the customer and break into the vehicle on a later date. It is easy to program an extra remote, or put an off switch in an easy to access place. When you provide your personal info, and leave your vehicle out of your sight for hours, anything can happen.

It pays to do it yourself

Now I am not saying all installers are crooks, there are many experienced honest people out there. I know, because I learned from some of the best.

I have been installing car alarms professionally for over eight years. I have been the go to guy at every shop i have worked at, and now I am here to help you. I have learned skills from some"top 12" installers, and worked with some of the best, across the country. I ran a business doing mobile car alarm installs for people like you. Mostly those who wished they could do it themselves. I ended up teaching alot, and doing installs with people looking over my shoulder, trying to learn a thing or two. Being an advanced installer, and after realizing there was no one place to find HOW TO (easy to understand for beginners), I decided to put out the ultimate source on how to install a car alarm, remote start, or keyless entry system.

There are places to find FREE wiring information on your vehicle

The First step

Is to find the wiring schematic on your specific vehicle. You need to know where to find a reliable source, and how to read this information. This will tell you what wires you need, where they are located, and what color they are. The prep work is the most important part when installing a car alarm or remote start system

Now there are alot of places out there giving away wiring diagrams. You need to be sure you get this information from a reliable source, otherwise you will have more problems than success. I will tell you where every shop finds their wiring diagrams, how to read this information, and exactly what you are looking for. These diagrams can be very confusing, and are overloaded with unnecessary information. You need to know what your looking for and why.

You could do it if someone simply told you exactly how, right?

The Second step

After you have proporly prepped your alarm or remote start unit, and disassembled the necessary panels, you need to test your wires.

By now you should already know what wires you are looking for, and where to find them. Testing wires is easy as long as you know how to use the tools, and how you know when you have found the correct wire. Often times there are multiple wires of the same color in your vehicle, so knowing how to proporly test and confirm all wires will prevent an accidental short, or worse. It is important that you test, and double check all wires prior to any connection. Use our checklist to be sure that you have tested all wires needed for your specific install
