Dine out. Stay fit. Eat happy.
Healthy Eats Here! is an organic restaurant guide years in the making, one I began researching during a travel-intense career.
My name is Holly Hickman. I love good food and am not shy about it, being half-Texan, half-Italian and thus all-appetite. I'm also a Columbia-trained journalist who has logged more miles than I can count, having worked as a science and radio reporter for a major network. Now I write SustainableSuppers.com.
Despite all my travels, I've been able to keep my weight down, my energy up, and the quality of my restaurant food pristine and delicious. What's my secret? Over the years, I have compiled a list of restaurants that serve real food, raised rightâ„¢ - my own personal healthy dining guide.
That's me on assignment in Cuba. Despite all the restauranting I've done over the years, I've been able to keep off the 40 pounds I lost nearly a decade ago. And that's eating out a lot and eating real meals -- no dry little salads, thank you very much. I've learned to achieve my health and aesthetic goals without sacrificing taste or quality.
You can do this, too. All you have to do is eat real food, food that has been raised right. And my healthy dining guide and I can show you where to find it, no matter where you are in the country. This is immediate, actionable intelligence on the best food in the country.
I should tell you one more thing: I'm a health nut, the kind who digs up primary studies and interviews scientists about nutrition on a regular basis.
What's really in most restaurant food:
I have reason to be concerned about health: cancer has wrecked my family seven times. My own father passed away, at 61, of a brain tumor. My step-father, seen with me below, has diabetes.
He travels a great deal and eats out at least five times a week. I don't want to lose another dad, so finding restaurants that support vibrant well-being has become imperative.
What we eat has a profound impact on our bodies, and I'm not just talking about weight.
If I've got a tumor brewing somewhere, I don't want to feed it an artificial growth hormone, and I don't want to ingest synthetic pesticides and other poisons. Hence, the value of green dining.
Unfortunately, your typical restaurant serves:
» Meat from factory farms. These animals are often fed pesticide-laden grains, ground up animal parts, chicken feces, plus waste products from food, drink and candy factories.
And that's just their typical diet. I haven't even touched on the antibiotics, the artificial growth hormones, and the filthy conditions in which many of them are raised.
Remember that whatever those animals ingest, you ingest. And that you can't wash the pesticide off the pork chop.
» Vegetables that have been sprayed with synthetic pesticides, herbicides and/or fungicides.
Yum.
» Dairy from cows raised in those same factory farms. We've already covered their typical diet. Dairy cows are also often injected with hormones to keep that milk pumping. Do I really want to eat those hormones?
No, thank you.
» Prepackaged chemical concoctions that they nuke and fling onto a plate.
I like my food fresh. And made of food, please.
Let's start chewing the right thing -- and the delicious thing, too.

The Good News: You can eat out and enjoy clean, delicious, healthy meals. You just have to know who's doing the cooking, and who's doing the farming. That's exactly the point of this healthy dining guide.
I've done diligent research: I started by contacting hundreds of farmers and fishermen across the country, all of whom focus on organics, sustainability and pristine growing conditions. I asked them, "Which restaurants do you sell to?" After some prodding, they told me, and I went and personally ate at many of those places.
All of them focus on pristine, high-quality ingredients. Some are fine dining places. Others are burger joints. Some offer phenomenal wood-oven pizzas, and others cook up sustainably-caught fish that was swimming in local waters just hours ago. I've even got a few ice cream parlors in there. Healthy, green dining options abound.
There is no other healthy dining guide book out there like this. Healthy Eats Here! lists hundreds of restaurants -- from California to Maine -- in one handy-dandy place.
In Healthy Eats Here!, I offer plenty of juicy tidbits about these healthy restaurants, telling you:
if the beef at a particular place is grass-fed and/or organic;
if the chicken is pastured
(and the difference between "pastured," "free-range," "grass-fed" and "organic");
if the vegetables are local and/or organic;
if there are good microbrews and regional wines;
if there are glorious vegetarian or vegan options
and if there's good chocolate! (It's a health food, remember?)
I tell you the best places to sit, the best dishes to order, and
I give you links to their farmers' web sites whenever possible.
I also give you all the standard info: addresses, price ranges, hours...plus links to maps, to the restaurants' web sites, and to sites that let you make reservations rightthissecond.
These are unbiased listings: these restaurants did NOT pay to be included. They did not know I was reviewing and researching them, and the ones I visited -- and I've eaten at a lot of these places -- never comped my meals or gave me a discount. They simply had no idea what I was up to.
