Re: How To Use Undercover Internet Marketing Strategies To Sell More Records, Have More Fans And Make More Money Than Most Major Label Artists
I have been where most of you are now and I work with many bands that are in your exact position. You know, the “I want to be a full time musician but I don’t know where to start or what to do…” position. I know it very well!
In fact the last show I ever played with my band, StuMpP was 9 hours away in the middle of nowhere in Georgia. We were smack in the middle of a weekend warrior tour, playing a small venue, dreaming of the “Rock Star Lifestyle.” We had newly printed shirts for the trip, our latest CD all pressed up and all the stickers, buttons and accessories you need to make some extra cash on the road.
That night we played for 20 people including the bartenders, waitstaff, owners and door guy. Not your typical definition of a “Rock Star Lifestyle.” Our music was good enough (or the staff felt bad enough) that we were able to scrape up gas and motel money to get us showered and back home in one piece.
The drive home in our beat up SUV and 3rd hand trailer would be our last as a band. We were packing it in after 4 years on the road, opening for acts like Bubba Sparxxx, Daughtry, Sevendust, Kingspade, Cori Yarckin, There For Tomorrow, Buckcherry, Papa Roach and countless others. After selling a few thousand CD’s. After hundreds of hours at practice, in the studio, on the road, at radio, at open mics, at conferences, events and even putting a band member through Full Sail (the $50k a year music education – not worth it FYI).
On Stage With 5,000 Screaming Fans
Why were we packing it in?
As a band we were not ready to be serious about music as a “business.” Our money was being spent on drinks and gear and nothing was helping us move towards our goals. Scratch that, we had no goals. We had no database of fans. Our business was stale like milk. It sucked. Big time. We knew it was time to pack it in.
Many of the bands that come into our offices or send over emails looking for consultations and marketing plans are really in the same boat.
Does this sound like you?
You spend all your money recording your music and spending whatever was left at Discmakers and are now stuck with boxes of CD’s
Your accounting system looks like a exchange of cash to the bartender as soon as the promoter hands it to you
You dream that a miracle will come in an take your band to the next level
You have boxes of CD’s laying around your room, garage or worse your parent’s house
You spend your time “wandering” social networks like Myspace, Facebook or Twitter with no goals and wondering why they don’t boost your sales
You still believe that you are a musician and everything else should be done by someone else
Look, There Is No Better Feeling Than Having A Few Hundred Or A Few Thousand Fans Screaming Your Lyrics, Showing You Love and Paying Your Bills!
Rocking The "Do-Over Show"
Nothing. There is nothing like it. I know this feeling so well and I know the felling of disappointment so, so well.
I’ve been in the gutter more times that you can imagine and I learned from all of them.
I spent out of my pocket $750 to have a local artist (who was signed and at one point had a #1 song on 106 & Park) open for our CD Release show. The result, we had about 50 people in the venue and I was out a few hundred bucks. At this point in my life I was waiting tables and scraped every penny to hit rent.
Sound familiar? I took a huge gamble and paid for it with overtime shifts and a lot of self-doubt.
We decided to have a do-over. This time recruiting some friends and bands we had played with over the years to help us out. The result?
400 people inside a sold out show. We had picket signs, street teams, 10,000 fliers, hundreds of hand made signs and posters and it worked.
What was the difference in the 2 above scenarios?
One Word – MARKETING.
The difference between one band and the next, one product and the next and one business and the next is marketing. It took me a long time to figure that out. Without marketing you do not have a business, you have a hobby. Without marketing you cannot make sales. Without marketing you cannot develop a fan base, a data base and create long term (or short term) income.
In short, in today’s music economy, the music with the best marketing wins.
I have made it my personal mission to learn both the music business and Internet Marketing from the inside out over the past 4 years. It has been nothing short of a wild ride. I have read books, bought courses, been mentored, snuck my way into conferences and seminars and then actually TOOK ACTION on the stuff I learned.
Over the past 4 years I have done all kinds of crazy things online applying what I had learned along my journey. It began learning about drop shipping and opening online stores selling hammocks and bird feeders. I’ve worked affiliate marketing programs. I’ve blogged my ass off. I’ve used SEO to land clients in every industry from selling Disney tickets to Sushi Restaurants to helping an author get to #3 on Amazon.
I created the opportunity to consult for Coca-Cola, Miller Lite, Warner Bros, artists on Polyplat Records, Cash Money and plenty of indie artists that my walls will soon be plastered with frames and plaques.
Getting back in the music industry led to creating Label 2.0, the interactive music marketing school that is home to some of the coolest musicians and entrepreneurs I have ever had the opportunity to coach. Label 2.0 has allowed me to have direct access to teaching marketing to over 450,000 musicians with the Reverb Nation platform, landed me on stage at Atlantis Music Conference, the Winter Music Conference, Florida Music Festival and tons of Internet Marketing and Social Media events all around the country.
While teaching the pre-launch module in Label 2.0 the members needed a real music marketing action plan. Probably just like you do. You need actionable steps to build a business, a business that allows you to have the lifestyle you always dreamed of, one that gives you the freedom to create and play music that inspires, creates emotion and moves energy from your voice to a fans ear.
The Big “Ah-Ha” Moment
I remember clearly what life was like before I started taking marketing seriously and made it “my business.” You know the stresses that come with every aspect of being a musician and how much work you put into your “art”.
Think about how much work you put in and how immensely discouraging it is when you are selling just 1 CD a month – or 2 – or 10 – or even 100.
All the time on Myspace
All the money spent on CD pressing
All the time designing and packaging the whole thing
All the time on Twitter and Facebook
All the aggravation of waiting in the post office line to ship out 1 CD to someone 500 miles away
Waiting for your songs to magically show up on iTunes after using a big box digital distributor
All the flyers you pass out that end up on the floor or in the garbage
All the text messages you send to your address book – which gets more unresponsive with every message
Filling out consignment forms at the local CD store only to pick up all the copies you left there 6 months later
Matching the number of drinks you have at the bar to match your sales that night
Lugging up big crates full of merch and then lugging them back to your car still full time after time
All that and more to sell those few CD’s and t-shirts and get a few new Myspace (or whatever other site) friends!
This is why I knew I needed to create a system for musicians to make not only a buzz online, but turn their music into a career, a business that will sustain their lifestyle for years on end – or better yet a lifetime. And I figured out how to do it through Internet Marketing and being really, really cool to your fans.
You all know the stats, the music industry is in dismay. CD sales continue to slip and digital revenues are not coming close to compensating. Even if you are fortunate enough to get your music on stations like Pandora or on TV shows, you are looking at pennies on the dollar compared to the big bucks the music industry is accustomed to.
Here’s the deal and the facts that the big business of Major Record Labels are neglecting to tell you – the Record Industry is dying BUT the Music Industry is a Cash Flow waiting to explode and create the next great generation of self-sufficient musicians.
Musicians that don’t need a major record label
Musicians that only need a few hundred to a few thousand fans to live a ‘Rock Star Lifestlye’
Musicians that can generate income on demand
Musicians that can turn out products in minutes, not weeks, months or years (and have it for sale direct to fan in literally seconds)
Musicians that can add multiple streams of income that record labels still don’t even know exist
“So, Really, Why Aren’t You Enjoying Success In The Music Business?”
Your music is good. It may even be great. The local papers and even bloggers love you and give you favorable reviews. So what’s the deal? Why are you having such a hard time taking this momentum and making real money in the indie music business?
The answer is that…
You don’t have the products your fans want to spend their hard earned money on
You are not creating content to engage your fans
You are not engaging with your fans where they “hang out”
You are too busy giving your music away to create any value in your career
You are spending time playing open mics for free instead of creating a business that brings in cash and higher paying guarantees
You still think of yourself as only a musician and not a marketer
You are spending more money on more gear or other non money making expenses than on actually growing your fan base
You do not even know who your real fans are and if you did you have no way of communicating directly with them
Your website is a big poster, one that doesn’t bring your fans through a buying process and get them actively involved in your career
You see? It’s not any of the things you might normally think would be responsible for your results. These are things you overlook everyday as you dream of being the next big Rock Star, Pop Star or Hip-Hop mogul.
It’s because of this that I have been working with countless musicians on creating an easy-to-follow system allowing you to continue to focus on your music AND focus on creating a business where you are totally cool to your fans, giving them exactly what they want and making really good money doing it!
You ready?
Introducing The Ultimate Music Marketing And Music Business Program That Will Help You Maximize Your Time, Find More Fans And Turn Those Fans Into Cash That Will Sustain Your Musician Lifestyle
The New Mu$ic Economy is the answer to all the hard work you put into your art and now want a return from the investment you put into making the best music you possibly can. It is the result of working with major label artists, major label refugees, indie artists, music industry businesses and my own business.
It is the way that musicians NEED to market themselves no matter the genre, no matter the style of music, no matter the age of the performer, no matter the type of release, no matter where they live and no matter their budget.
Did I mention budget?
In the age of the record labels you needed a million dollar budget. From magazine ads to big budget music videos to billboards to in-store displays and big TV appearances if you wanted to be a Mega Star you needed to spend your money like one. This is what made the major labels have a strong hold on the music industry. They had the investment capital and you had the music. It was a (one-sided) mutual agreement and it worked to an extent.
But this type of mass media advertising is all but dying. Newspapers are shrinking (if they aren’t already out of business) and content is being fought over online – where the cost of having your message shared is as simple as having the right network!
I am about to show you how to build your music business online, run with the mindset of an Internet Marketer inside of the New Mu$ic Economy. These are the same tried and true principles that I have not only used in my online businesses, with my clients and with countless musicians, but also within the Internet Marketing community of information publishing which is a billion dollar business and growing!
While others are talking of everything that is presently being done in music as an experiment, you have ripped a page out of the internet marketing books and presented things in terms that easily understood. This had to be done! Whether marketing information, or marketing music–marketing is marketing. The same principles apply. And these principles work-they were developed by marketers who have made millions on the internet.
