The Schengen visa has greatly simplified travelling in Europe. The
25 countries of the Schengen area are treated as borderless, i.e. you
may enter one country with the visa, and you may travel freely through
the Schengen region while the visa is valid.

The visa is named after a small town in Luxembourg where, in March
1995, seven European Union countries signed a treaty to end internal
border checkpoints and controls. Over the years, another 18 European
