Hello,

My name is Renee and I suffered from depression on and off for 30
years.

Depression controlled many parts of my life - personal
relationships, finances, everyday household functions, energy levels
and much more. I remember being unhappy as a teenager and thinking
that when I moved out on my own, I would be happy.

I moved across the country at the age of 19 and thought happiness
was within reach. I had grown up in a small town in Tennessee and
thought moving to a big city was what was missing. I moved to Dallas,
Texas. I lived in Texas for a year and half looking for something but
coming up empty-handed. I moved back to Tennessee, lonely...and broke.


I kept searching and met a man who I quickly married. I wanted to
start the next phase of my life because I figured marriage and
motherhood was what I was missing. Soon thereafter I had my son and a
couple of years after my daughter. My husband had two young sons from
a previous marriage, so at times our home was quite busy.

I thoroughly enjoyed being a mother. The kids were young and needed
my constant attention. However, life was not blissful. My marriage had
problems, I didn't have any real friends, and something was still
missing from my life.

When my son started school, I went back to work. That didn't bring
me the satisfaction I yearned for, so I returned to school to get my
college degree.

Now I was working full time, attending school and taking care of
the household. My husband was often out of town and everything became
my responsibility. I was keeping busy but something was still missing.


After nine years of marriage I filed for divorce. By this time I
was on medications for depression, slept every time I had the chance,
and I was basically only subsisting through life. I continued going to
school, working full-time and taking care of my kids. If it were not
for my parents, I don't know what I would have done. Without my Mother
to take care of the kids after school, I would not have been able to
complete my education.

In the mean time, I lost my job due to downsizing, took another job
that didn't work out and started my own company which failed within
the first year.

I had relationships that didn't work.

My finances were a shambles.

I met someone who promised to take all of it away and we were
married. That marriage quickly failed and my children and I moved out
within a year. I had started a new career, and my children and I
settled into our new home.

Six months later, I had an episode with my new job that created a
"post-traumatic stress" situation. I was unable to continue the
employment and quit my job. I then started working for myself as an
independent insurance agent. I was able to have my own business and
work my schedule around the kid's activities.

This was the same time I started working with a psychologist for my
depression. He also diagnosed me with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
and suggested additional medication. He also referred me to someone
for an evaluation.

I began taking medication for ADD as well. I immediately saw
improvements. I was delighted with the "new" me and wanted to have
that kind of life, without medications. At a particularly low point I
was referred to a social worker to start psychotherapy.

This is when my progress really began. Medications temporarily
helped the symptoms, but life seemed to always bring them back.
Sometimes the depression episodes were so bad that I would cry at the
drop of a hat, or I would lie in bed for hours seeking a comfort that
would not come. I was unable to work during these times, which ruined
me financially.

As I started psychotherapy, I had to learn to stop looking for
happiness from external sources. There wasn't going to be a job, a
person or any material item that would bring lasting happiness. I was
the only one who could create happiness within me. I had to love
myself, and make changes in my thinking that would lead to a change in
the course my life would then take.

Through changes in my thought process, I was able to begin
eliminating the depression symptoms. The _ SNAP OUT OF IT - A GUIDED

result of activities I completed over time that in turn created the
strong foundation on which I now operate.

These activities have been central to my healing.

Through it, I developed skills that enabled me to handle episodes

paralyzing depression.
