RE: The Truth about Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
Dear Concerned Homeowner or Renter,
The truth is...you want to save energy to help the environment and you need to save money on your electricity bills--but like most people, you're confused.
Here's the problem you and every other concerned homeowner or renter face right now...
You've probably already bought a few of those "curly" CFL bulbs and tried them out at home. But you couldn't tell how much energy or money they really saved.
Besides, a lot of them didn't last as long as the package guaranteed--and the light they put out wasn't bright enough and had a strange color.
You're not sure if you can install them in your dining room chandelier, because it has a dimmer switch.
And you've heard that CFLs contain poisonous mercury and cause migraine headaches.
Like millions of other people, you wonder--is it better to wait for LEDs to drop from $100 apiece, to a price that regular people can afford?
With all these concerns swirling around in your mind, how could anyone make the right choices?
But it's worse than you think! Here's why...
This problem isn't just going to go away while you bury your head in the sand. The U.S., Canadian, Australian and European governments have already ruled that traditional light bulbs must go.
In some places, the ban on standard incandescent bulbs begins September, 2009, and in all cases, the ban will be complete by 2014.
That means you may have only a few months left to act. And by putting off your decision now, you're losing money, wasting energy, and possibly making yourself and your loved ones sick.
Luckily, there's a solution...

The Energy Efficient Light Bulb
Buyer's Guide:
Six Simple Steps to a lower-cost,
more environmentally responsible home
WIth the help of this clear, accurate and concise workbook, and just a couple hours of your time, you could earn back far more than you spend on energy efficient light bulbs. Like me, you could start saving real money on your electric bill, month after month. Plus, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you've done your part to reduce your impact on the environment.
In Fact, Here's Just The Tip of The Iceberg of What You Get...
Save $25, $50 a month or more--beginning with your next month's electric bill! (Results will vary, depending on your situation.) See my own savings demonstrated below and on page 8...
Know for sure exactly which type of energy efficient light bulbs--CFLs, LEDs, or one of the new energy saving halogen bulbs--to buy for each light fixture in your home (start with the home light bulb survey found on page 10)...
Don't waste time and money buying bulbs that won't work with your light switches, that won't save you money, and that don't last as long as the package guarantees (see the extensive Energy Saving Light Bulb FAQs, beginning on page 36)...
Calculate exactly how much energy and money you will save with energy efficient light bulbs--and how long it will take to earn back your investment (complete details in STEP 6, beginning on page 30)...
Reduce your environmental footprint by cutting the kilowatt-hours it takes to light your home, and figure out how much CO2 you're saving (directions on page 38)...
Find out how and where to recycle burned out or broken CFLs (and why you MUST do this!) (detailed instructions on page 45)...
Set up an easy system to get your money back on expensive bulbs that don't perform as guaranteed (see the Light Bulb Warranty Tracker on page 29)...
Prevent headaches and other negative symptoms caused by too much exposure to the ultra-violet light from unfiltered CFLs (check out the FAQ on page 46)...
And much, much more!
Here's How and Why I Can Make You This Promise
As a new homeowner just a few years ago, I suddenly became responsible for replacing dozens of light bulbs that burned out far too frequently. I tried some of the new compact fluorescent bulbs, which were touted to last years longer than standard incandescent bulbs.
To my surprise, the first CFL I installed burned out within two weeks. The next one lasted only a day.
After some detailed research, I learned why: The electronic controls in most CFLs aren't compatible with daylight sensors, which I had installed in my porch light to automatically turn on at night and off at dawn. Unfortunately, I permanently damaged the fixture by using the wrong bulb for the job.
After that first disaster, I continued my quest for the right energy efficient bulb for each light fixture in my home. I put my engineering training and journalism research skills to good use, studying professional articles, government reports and product literature, combing the Internet and haunting the hardware stores.
Over the course of six months, I developed a method for systematically replacing each light bulb in my home with the optimum energy efficient bulb for that location.
The results speak for themselves. You can see on the graph below how my electricity use dropped by an average of 19 percent a month for the first three months after converting to energy efficient light bulbs:
Here's how much we saved converting to energy efficient bulbs:
Monthly Electricity Use (kWh)2007-20082008-2009Increase/DecreaseMay11241588+ 41 %June18282003+ 10 %July16862376+ 41 %August24812320- 6 %September28642096- 27 %October20691559- 25 %November14641535- 5 %December15701199- 24 %January1740February1273March1568April1678
Before August 2008, our monthly electricity use had jumped much higher than the previous year, probably because of all the extra cell phone chargers, computers and video game systems we added as the kids grew older. But starting with the very next billing cycle after converting to energy efficient light bulbs halftway through the month, we used 161 fewer kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy, which amounted to a savings of $16.
Just think, in less than one month, our electricity use went from 41 percent higher than the year before to 6 percent lower! Over the next three months, we averaged a savings of $48 EACH MONTH!
(For those readers concerned about global warming, this saving in kWh translates to 768 pounds less CO2 released into the atmosphere from electric power plants.)
Think about it: Month after month, year after year, you could save $25 to $50—or more—with very little effort or expense on your part (see DISCLAIMER below). Your savings could quickly add up, giving you extra cash to pay down your credit cards, take a weekend getaway, or build up your retirement fund.
With these positive results, I decided to help others get the same benefits I've experienced. I wrote the Energy Efficient Light Bulb Buyer's Guide to pass on everything I've learned to help you reduce the amount of money you spend and electricity you use to light your home.
I know this unique system will help you save both money and energy--and a lot of frustration as well!
But don't just take my word for it, take a look at this...
"Take Seriously the Opportunity"
"People have to become much more conscious about energy use, about where their energy comes from, and I think that many people take seriously the opportunity to do things at home… to use more efficient light bulbs..."
--Carol Browner, senior White House adviser for energy and climate change, quoted in usnews.com March 6, 2009
"Become Educated on the Kinds of Light Sources"
“A consumer should do the best job they can to educate themselves on what kinds of light sources are available for the home. And certainly we’re asking consumers to do a lot more than they used to do....Moving to compact fluorescent technology is going to require a consumer to become more educated.”
-- Michael Siminovitch, Director of the CaliforniaLightingTechnologyCenter, and professor at the University of California, Davis, quoted in The New York Times online, January 27, 2009
"Regardless of Your Political Persepective"
“We have put compact fluorescents in every light in our home and have seen our electric bill go down about 40 bucks a month, so they do save money…”
______________
“Me too. I cut down 25 percent on my energy usage and [put] extra money in my pocket. It's just common sense for me regardless [of the] liberal agenda to impose or conservative agenda to disprove."
--Two comments on a forum
"Energy Efficiency is the Most Cost-Effective Solution"
“We owe it to ourselves to embrace energy efficiency as the most cost-effective solution for mitigating global warming and energy price volatility.”
--Claire Fulenwider, executive director of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance
