I remember when I made my first affiliate site using datafeeds, I thought I had just hit a gold mine. I created an affiliate site using a datafeed of circuit city through Commission Junction and got a site with 60,000 web pages dynamically generated overnight. I woke up the next morning, went for a nice long walk with a big dream in my eyes and the feeling that I had achieved what I wanted. Came back home and checked my stats on CJ and had no sales. Well, it doesn't work overnight right? So I submitted my site to various search engines because at that time, this was the trend. Additionally I submitted my site to various web directories and did a lot of SEO stuff to get my site indexed. I constantly spent 8-10 hours every day for almost a month and didn't see any sale at all. I just couldn't get it, I built a huge site, spent days on getting my site indexed and there was nothing that was working. Believe me, I couldn't sleep at nights as I wondered what else could I do to get this site going, there was no hope left and I had lost all my confidence.
I don't know what I would have done at that time, probably I would have started looking for a job because everything I had tried so far, had failed.
This is the time when I first met Mark Roth, and was introduced to PPC (Pay per Click) marketing. Another hope for me, and there I was spending several days building up a nice campaign for Google Adwords and I finally got it. I got my first ever affiliate sale on December 25th 2005. After that there was no looking back. Since Google CPC costs were very low at that time, a $0.05 bid could get you listed among the top 5 results on selective keywords, I was able to make a decent profit for my efforts. I made my first $1000 within the next 10 days and everything started working great. I was just getting the hang of it and on my way to build several more sites with different niches, and then GOOGLE SLAP HAPPENED.
A nightmare for most PPC advertisers, Google raised the CPC on all my keywords and since I did not have the budget to pay close to $1 per click, the traffic to my sites just dropped big time, and I was back to square one.
