ACOUSTICAL INSTRUMENT RESTORATION

A "do it yourself" SERIES  Fixit-Playit

by Charlie Sides

Just how many fretted acoustical instruments like: guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, etc do you suppose are laying idle, stuffed into a closet or under the bed - maybe even hanging on a wall. BUT ARE NEVER PLAYED.

Way more than anyone would guess! There are many reasons why these jewels are left dormant. The effects of old age, neglect, damage of some sort- what ever. Typically these forgotton instruments will go to their grave and never make music again. THAT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN!

Those instruments can be restored and the music can be returned. Your saying "well my old clunker just isn't worth the cost of a repair" That maybe true if you pay to have the instrument repaired by a professional - in fact, most "pro repairmen would tell you: "the instrument isn't worth what it would cost to have me make that repair". DO IT YOURSELF!

I mean FIXIT - PLAYIT! That is exactly why I wrote Volume I of  "ACOUSTICAL INSTRUMENT RESTORATION" That's why I wrote Volume II and also why I have Volumes III and IV in work. Each Volume documents the Restoration performed on a particular acoustical instrumment. Volume I, for example, documments the restoration work accomplished on a 1952 Harmony Baritone Ukulele. The fact that the fretted instrument was a ukulele isn't significant - what is important, is that it provides the detailed instructions and color photos for performing a "Neck Reset of a Dove Tail Joint" and a "Refret Job of a Non-Bound Neck".

The Volume II restoration was on a Dorado Dreadnaught Guitar made in Japan by Gretsch in the early 1970's. That restoration required a new bridge, top brace repair, removal of a bulge behind the bridge, refret of a bound neck, a  complete set-up including the making of a new nut, a new saddle and setting the relief and action. These step by step detailed instructions are supported by many color photos of the actual repair task as it was performed. RESTORE THE PLAYABILITY, VOLUME AND TONE!

Volume III will address an "F style" Mandolin that was "in the white". It required headstock lamination, binding, inlays, sanding, tinting, lacquer finishing, new nut, adjustible bridge preparation and buffing polishing, and set-up. Volume IV will be the restoration of a a new Seagull Entourage guitar that got major crack damage during shipment. What I want you to believe is: YOU CAN DO THESE REPAIRS YOURSELF!

The restoration series is written for the novice and every attempt is made to give you the least expensive, yet acceptable approach to doing these repairs. Hey! If you can change the strings on your instrument - you can do these repair tasks and they won't cost an arm or a leg either. Dig out that hidden instrument. LET'S RESTORE THE MUSIC!

Believe me, with these repair manuals you can restore the music at a reasonable cost. Is the Action too high? Are the Frets worn out? Does it need a Set-Up? What Ever! You don't have to purchase the entire Volume or Volumes to do what repair is needed. The pages defining each different repair task have been extracted from the Volume and are being offered as single Books - you get what you need, only what you need, and aren't required to pay for the entire Volume. Of course, the Volumes are available for those that want the entire publication. Here's the titles of the eBooks available now:
