Childhood obesity within the U.S is getting out of control. In 2007 it was estimated that 1 in every 6 children between the ages of 5-16 were severely overweight. We all know that obesity is a serious problem and we need to do something about. Not only does it affect the child’s health it will also affect them mentally, emotionally and physically.
We all want what’s best for our children and the best way to combat obesity is getting them to do more exercise and cutting down on their calorie intake. Over the past 15 years obesity in children has risen greatly, this is not just in the U.S. though all over Europe obesity is getting worse. We need to put a stop to it now before it rises, believe me it won’t take long before we have an international epidemic of obesity on our hands.
In the past ten years or so the amount of overweight children more than doubled alone, it does and can affect both sexes and numbers have tripled in all age groups, believe me it’s getting out of control.
Overweight and obese children are generally very embarrassed about their bodies and the way they look. They are less likely to do something about it because not only are they embarrassed by the way their body looks but they will feel extremely silly about doing exercise in front of others. Children who are overweight or obese are often bullied because of their weight problem and they will probably not join in for gym class.
As previously mentioned the only way to help your child is to get them to exercise on a regular basis and cut down their food intake. In some cases their behavior may be involved with their problem.
The causes of obesity will differ from each person, some may have a health problem, some will comfort eat, some will be inactive and it may be caused through genetics. There are loads of different reasons for what cause obesity. It is likely that children with overweight parents will be overweight themselves because they have been brought up with their way of living or it is passed on in the genes but again there are many more reasons. I’m and not saying it’s the parents fault but think of it like this parents provide the genes the children are born with, parents provide the games consoles and parents provide the food. You know your children will look on you as their role model if you eat way too much they think they should, if you lay around all day they think it is ok for them to do it. Even if the parent doesn’t have a severe weight problem and does the above things your kids will copy but they may become obese.
You may have noticed the massive changes in the ingredients in our food, pop, and sweets a lot of things have been cut out to try and put a stop to obesity. But also notice our favorite take a way’s, think of it this way if they didn’t give you a big portion you wouldn’t pay for another to make it up would you. One of the key factors therefore is the amount of food we eat and our lifestyle. Exercise or should I say lack of it also contributes to being overweight think about this, how many hours does your child sit in front of the television on a daily basis and how many hours do they spend playing computer games? I bet you answer would be quite a lot of time. The television is one of the main factors of child hood obesity, take a look at this and you will be surprised at how much the television has to do with obesity.
Watching the television is effortless, given a remote and you could happily sit there for hours. Watching television prevents a child from being active they won’t go out and play which is great exercise and they don’t realize they are doing it. Most foods you see advertised on the television are for fast food restaurants and sweets galore. The actors and actresses on the fast food adverts eating the food are a size 0 this makes the child think food like this won’t affect my weight.
