The book begins with an explanation of the brain and how it works, with an understandable description of depression in its various forms. In successive chapters, explanations in laymen's terms are given that reveal depression to be more than a mental illness; its many causes are identified, along with the effects it has on the human psyche, and the important role nutrition and lifestyle play in managing and overcoming this malady. Dr. Nedley next examines the role of herbs and medications in the treatment of depression: their benefits, side effects, and the best way to successfully discontinue them. Considerable space is also devoted to the role stress plays in causing depression and how to adequately control it.

This book, written by a physician, is an excellent work on depression, it's causes, and various treatments. Dr. Nedley gives extensive research-based information on the many causes of depression, and then offers several lifestyle changes that can help improve or even eliminate many forms of depression. He speaks of depression as it relates to other physical diseases, and also to various lifestyle habits and thinking patterns. This is the book for those who are on medication and wish to make changes in lifestyle that will help them to eventually eliminate the need for meds, or for those who do not wish to, or need to use medications to treat their depression.
