My quick story.
I've been a papergirl, a magazine editor, an overnight gas station
attendant (twice), a chimney sweep, an architectural designer, a
nightclub manager, a pizza-maker, an accounting firm errand person, a
graphic designer, and an office supply sales person just to name a
few. I've lived in Japan, England, and the United States throughout
the last 29 years and have spent considerable time in France, Germany,
Russia, Italy, Kenya, Estonia, Romania, Hong Kong, and many, many
other European countries. What a mess! Looking back, I don't think I
was destined for a regular employment situation.
In 2004, I was broke. After several years of here-and-there college
attempts and sporadic attendance, I found myself sitting on a
cardboard box in my storage unit looking over my bills. As I scanned
the letters and notices wondering who to turn to or what to do, an
uncontrollable swelling of desparity and surrender began deep witin. I
had my first real breakdown that day. I cried very hard. I was so in
debt, I couldn't see straight. That's when I made the best decision of
my life.
I arrived in Japan a week later to visit my parents and take a break
from real life (yeah, their treat). It paid off. Getting out for just
a few weeks gave me the window of clarity I had been needing. Not two
weeks after my return to Texas, I was back on a plane for Japan to get
my life in order.
Soon, I was working as a civilian for the U.S. government making
$12.47 an hour, slowly attacking my mound of bills--paying only now
for the fun years past. Though I was feeling better every day,
something was missing. I wasn't making money fast enough. Sitting in
my cubicle one day I was running some numbers. After doing the math, I
realized it would take me almost 10 years to be out of debt
completely. Then another 30 years to to safely put about 400 thousand
away for retirement. Frustrated, I did only what I could--get back to
work. Over the two years at my job I poured my heart and soul into
every project, giving fresh ideas and suggesting bold moves. Much to
my dismay, I was quickly and frequently struck down by the oh so
common suppressive bat of the corporate-like work place. On
Valentine's day of 2006, I had had enough. I happily resigned, but
with an unavoidable itch of uncertainty for what lay ahead.
Fortunately, by this time I had cleared most of my scary debts and
could operate as a normal human being. But what was next? Another
decision had to be made, and quickly. While working at the magazine I
had ammassed a pile of ideas. I would hit the beach frequently just to
think on the more interesting ideas and would jot my thoughts down in
little Memo notebooks. The "what-if's" began to drive me crazy. So
began during this time the journey of discovery that would turn my
life to the richer--financially and emotionally. I moved back to the
United States that summer of 2006 and began my first business.
Within 1 month of launch, I payed off all my remaining debts and was
making between 4-10K a month.. now I’m making ten times that! Do YOU
