Commitment and Consistency.
Several studies have shown that people move towards commitment and consistency. In more simple term when you make a decision to take action you will tend to drive yourself to completing the task. This becomes more extreme if the commitment was made publically. Many persuaders use this principle from cults to governments, charities to corporate organisations and persuasion engineers all over the world.
One example is a well known charity that stops you in the street and asks you if you are against world poverty. If you say yes (how many people wouldn’t?) they ask you to sign a petition with that statement.
