American Civil War Map Collection [6]

But what is Google Earth?

To quote Google:

“your computer becomes a window to anywhere, allowing you to view
high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery, photos, elevation
terrain, road and street labels, business listings and more.”

In other words, Google Earth allows you to get a bird’s eye view
of just about anywhere on the planet, (oceans, jungles and places off
the beaten track are only covered by low resolution images. Most of
the Civil War battlefields are of sufficient resolution to see the
current positions of artillery and fortifications).

Every file within the American Civil War Map collection contains
multiple files to Points of Interest (POI’s). These mark where key
moments of each battle took place, (or in the Campaign maps it shows
the major towns and cities)

Dear Visitor

American Civil War Maps has produced an e-book full of maps showing
the major battles of the American Civil War. The easy-to-use Civil War
maps aimed at teachers and students alike to help in the understanding
of this defining moment in American History.

All the major battles and campaigns are included, from Fort Sumter
to Appomattox Court House, with particular focus on the major battle
at Gettysburg in July 1863.

NOT JUST MAPS!

In addition to Civil War maps, the American Civil War Map Collection
includes:

Google Earth overlays of all the major battles*;

Google Earth Point’s of Interest markers (POI’s*) for all the
key locations on the major battlefields;

Detailed listings of ALL the Battles of the Civil War (State by
State, in date order and in Campaign lists).

* Google Earth overlays and POI’s are tools included within the
basic, Google Earth application. Maps of the major battles have been
incorporated into the Google Earth application creating a map which
superimposes itself on the real satellite view. These fully adaptable

How will I use the American Civil War Maps Collection?

The screen shot below shows how the file will be displayed (in this
example on a Microsoft Windows XP computer).

As you can see the files look exactly the same as any other Windows
type file. Double-left-clicking on the relevant folder and then on the
files. These will open the map or document using standard software on
your computer (apart from the .pdf files which require Adobe Acrobat
reader, available for free from Adobe and the Google Earth files which
require the free Google Earth application from Google).

The example below shows how the files appear: one will open a Google
Earth link (POI) and one a Google Earth overlay for the Battle of
Lookout Mountain (Nov 24th 1863).

You must have the Google Earth application on your computer for this
to work correctly

As you can see, the combination of the map and the real satellite
image (especially when the overlay transparency is adjusted) make it
easier to understand the historic event which took place here.

Here is the overlay for the map the Battle of Lookout Mountain
featuring the National Park Service map. It is important to note that
the translucence of the overlay can be easily adjusted within the
Google Earth application (in fact the whole map can be moved around to
suit the needs of the user).
