Dear Fellow Reefer,

I know exactly what it’s like. You have seen some beautiful reef tanks and really want to start one of your own but you have no idea what you need to do and why so that you can get started.

You are not on your own

But finding all of that information is often the challenge.

For Me It All Started Just Over Ten Years Ago

Just over ten years ago I can vividly remember when I first became interested in saltwater aquariums.

I had kept both coldwater and freshwater aquariums for many years yet I really wanted the bright fish and colourful corals just like the ones I had seen in other people’s reef tanks and also on the coral reef.

I bet you know that feeling!

The trouble was – I had absolutely no idea where to start!

My local bookstore had just the one dusty old book that was general and very basic, I found a few more titles on the internet and in my local fish shop which ranged in price from just a few dollars to over a hundred dollars.

I purchased practically all of these.......a few hundred dollars later and all I had was more questions!

I wanted to know what all the equipment was for, what equipment I needed, how to look after the fish, corals and a lot more. Ultimately I wanted it all in a format which I could understand so that I did not waste both my time or my money on items I would later find out I did not need.

In A Way I Was Lucky...
I Grew Up Around Aquariums!

Before I continue any further I have a quick question to ask you:

How new are you to keeping aquariums?

You will see why I am asking that question before long but for now let’s continue.

From being a small child all the way through to me leaving home to seek pastures new my Dad had kept both fish and corals in numerous aquariums ranging from small to large.

I can just about remember, many, many years ago, a small aquarium in the kitchen with marine fish in it. At this time I was quite a young age and my Dad remembers that  I was fascinated with the colours of the fish.

Later when I was a bit older a reef tank in the wall arrived which had what I used to call spaghetti in it – I did not know at the time that this was called an anemone.

I have some fantastic memories of this aquarium. I can remember early one morning whilst my Mum and Dad were still in bed seeing a shrimp poking out of the top of the anemone and I thought that the anemone had eaten it.

How was I to know at that age that shrimps moult!

Another great memory I have was watching a fish which lived inside the ‘spaghetti’. It used to rub up against the anemone and even sleep in it. My Dad told me that it was called a clown fish which confused me as it did not look very funny.

C’mon I was young!

One of my Dad’s aquariums which I have the most memories about was a large aquarium in the family room which was full of both fish and corals.

This aquarium had many more things in it. There was another aquarium under the display aquarium with loads of equipment in it which I was not allowed to go in until I was older. If I remember rightly I think I even used the words ‘It’s not fair’ a few times!

I do have to admit though that as a child whilst I used to watch the aquariums I was not really that interested in them – it was my Dad’s hobby after all and not mine!

Every Wednesday I would go to the fish shop with him and look at the fish and corals whilst he talked to the owner. On a weekend I would help him by holding a tube in a bucket whilst he did a water change, I would sit with him whilst he fed the fish and I would help him clean the aquarium – as much as I was allowed to anyway.

I have to be honest though, at that time I was not that interested in fish.

I just wanted to spend time with my Dad!

And they were fantastic times. I probably did not appreciate it back then but we had some great times together. My Dad and I working together.

My Dad worked a lot you see both in the office earning a living for his family and on a weekend working on the house to try and get it ‘ship shape’

Thinking about it now this is probably why he started a reef tank as they are so relaxing and after all the work he did he needed something to relax with – I’ve never even thought about that before now.

Another thing that I did not appreciate back then but certainly do now is how much information he actually passed onto me. He told me all about nature, he talked to me at bed time and he would try to involve me in his hobby as much as I wanted to.

I did not know as a child that many years later the memories of the fish and corals in my Dad’s aquariums would stay with me and that I would want my own saltwater aquarium.

Bet my Dad did not see that coming – maybe he hoped it would though!

So I set out trying to discover as much as I possibly could about this hobby. I visited numerous fish shops, talked to lots of people, read as much as I could and went on the internet in search of information.

And I found it but…

Guess What!

There was another thing that I also found.

A lot of people gave me conflicting advice

Some people said to use this, others said to use that – I was advised to do it this way and then told that this information was wrong!

How many times have you read some material or been on the internet and found information which contradicted each other!

Loads I bet!

Have you been in any aquarium related forums?

I did as well and whenever I asked a question I got a multitude of answers all contradicting each other.

Everywhere was aimed at people who knew what they were doing – at people who were more advanced than myself – not at beginners.

It was driving me mad – I just wanted to know what to do.

So I swallowed my pride – I went to speak to my Dad!

You are probably wondering why I did not just go to him in the first place aren’t you?

Well I did not go to him before as I wanted to work everything out for myself – I did not want to be told what to do by ‘my old man’.

I’ll tell you something though (but don’t tell him!) – I was totally wrong!

I have to say he was absolutely fantastic. First of all he sat me down to see if I was genuinely interested in the hobby and that this was not just a passing interest. He then tried to find out how much I already knew about this hobby by asking some questions and then he told me everything that I needed to purchase and everything that I needed to know so that I could get started.

Of course he did not tell me everything I needed to know in an afternoon. We spoke all the time about it. I ran my ideas past him and before long I was ready to purchase all the items I needed.

These were all purchased and in no time at all I had my own reef tank set up in my home. Over the following months my Dad helped me ensure that everything was ok whilst at the same time passing even more of his knowledge onto me – the most important of which was patience!

I dread to think how much time and money I would have wasted if it had not been for my Dad. The money wasted would easily have gone into hundreds if not thousands.

The information he provided me with was invaluable – without it as said I would have wasted loads of money and I am sure I would have been a reef keeper for long!

Fast forward ten years to present day and I have learnt a huge amount more. A great deal from my Dad and also a lot from my own experiences and experimentation. There are some areas of this hobby which my Dad says I know better than him!

Now that’s a compliment.

I also now have my own son (Joshua) who likes to be with me whilst I spend time with my aquarium – who knows, maybe in the future I will be passing on my knowledge to him!

Let’s hope so.

I now have my very own highly successful reef tank which I am exceptionally proud of. It is full of healthy colourful corals and fish which are so vibrant in colour it is the envy of everyone who sees it.

My Dad still keeps a reef tank and is still very passionate about this hobby. I believe that even if he did not have an aquarium he would be passionate about it. He has now been keeping saltwater aquariums for well over 25 years and I have to say is the most knowledgeable person I have ever met when it comes to this hobby.

Now I’m happy to say, I can help you start your very own reef tank – I can give you all the information you need!

Confusion, doubt and even worry that you won’t ever be able to have your own reef tank can be a most disheartening experience. However, there is no need to worry anymore.

I’m not telling you this because I want to impress you, but to impress upon you that starting a reef tank is something which you can do without it burning a big hole in your pocket – because I have invested both my time and my Dads in creating the perfect solution for you!

It always amazes me how much my Dad actually knows about this subject and as said there are some areas which I know more about than my Dad (mainly natural filtration and hard corals)

I have managed to convince my Dad that the knowledge he has in his head is useful for lots of people all over the world – people like you.

Between my Dad and I we have literally brain dumped all of the information we know and carefully created a resource which is easily understandable by anybody. We have painstakingly laid this resource out so that it is easy to follow using a step-by-step format and we do not actually tell you what to do.

What we have done is something completely different.

Each reef tank is different in so many ways and what could work for one may not necessarily work for another. What you need to do is uncover the truth about how things work, what they do, why they are required etc.

All of your available options are explained in concise detail, what will work with what, what they do etc and in the end you can make up your own mind as to what is best for both you and your new reef tank safe in the knowledge that the choice you have made is correct and is not based upon controversy but based upon time proven facts.
