floor plans, added menus, business cards, resumes and more. I reworked
it until I was satisfied. I also had not a shred of experience or any
foundation to base things on.

(aka the guy to approve or decline a loan!), not a small business

finally had the opportunity to put the plan to use and so I opened my
shop and followed the plan. Then, mistakes followed: Unrealistic
calculations in sales projections, used equipment that began to fail,
a bad location, wrong demographics, under capitalization, and a lot

that was ever in the coffee business, namely a coffee shop
entrepreneur, owner and operator.

I do not proclaim to have dozens of years experience but I can tell
you that since I opened my store and made costly mistakes, I will

Folks, this business plan is not based on theory from some other
business, or some other business plan, or some wannabe entrepreneur,
or some group of 'professionals' that took a taco shack business plan,
changed some words and 'ran it past' industry "gurus", seasoned
bankers, grandma and a gnome for approvals. It's what I wrote as I
fixed a lot of costly mistakes I made. It is also how I will operate
any new coffee houses I open (which are on the horizon)!
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!
DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR COMPETITION IS? I BET I KNOW WHO YOU'RE
THINKING OF, AND IT'S NOT THEM!
STARBUCKS IS NOT OUR COMPETITION!
This plan does not have a 5 or 10 or even 1 page dissertation about
Starbucks' strategy and trends and other nonsense about them because
the only things that Starbucks is good at are picking an awesome
location, keeping their name in front of us all, and suing for
copyright infringement. That is it, believe it or not. Don't get me
wrong, they have made tremendous strides by allowing myself and
countless other shop owners to be able to make a comfortable living
selling $5.00 cups of coffee. And I thank them for that. However, in
most of the 'coffee shop business plan' _templates_ that are available
on the internet all name Starbucks as our main competition. That could
not be further from the truth and anyone who is truly involved inside
this industry knows they pose very little, if any threat at all. They
actually do not want us around! You will see how you can use them to
your advantage and be successful doing it.

When I first opened my shop, I did not know how to effectively

mailers and even door hangers on every door, all advertising open for

received a hand full of coupons back and the customer traffic was
