Today I want to talk about a topic that hits close to home. Something that's a bit more personal than counting sets and reps.

It’s time to talk about body image and confidence - something I’ve struggled with my whole life.

Having others see your body shouldn’t cause extreme anxiety, but let’s be real - it can do just that, and it’s awful. I’ve been there.

You know the feeling. You get that text from your friends, the one that goes like this:

“Hey! Pool party at my place next weekend. Bring some beer and whoever you want, we’ve got food and music covered.”

This should be a fun time! Friends, a swimming pool, food, games, music… but you get a pit in your stomach.

The thought of your friends seeing you in a bathing suit is absolutely terrifying

Sure, you can dress yourself up to look nice at the bar, but getting in a bathing suit? No thanks.

You now have two options. 

You can make up some lousy excuse about why you can’t go, which involves lying to your friends and missing the fun. Or, you can go, sit on the side desperately hoping nobody asks you to join in, and be that person who doesn’t join the fun out of embarrassment.

I know this feeling well, because I’ve been there.

The pool party is just one example out of many. There are many, many other situations where feeling less than confident in your body can get in the way.

Maybe you’re with a new partner, and the thought of them seeing you without your clothes on is terrifying.Maybe you’re just a few months away from your wedding, the biggest day of your life, and you don't love your body as much as you should.Maybe you look better than all of your friends, but you’re still tired of seeing that soft, pudgy layer of insulation around your midsection.

Regardless of the situation, feeling insecure and unhappy about your body is very real, and can be very damaging. I’m not saying you should hate yourself. I’m 100% behind loving your body and being positive about yourself.

However, just because someone tells you to be happy with yourself, doesn’t make it any easier. 

You can try to be positive, as you should be, but the reality is that you’re probably going to have a hard time feeling confident if you don’t love the body you see in the mirror.

There is a lot of money in selling snake oil diet pills and weight loss meal plans, and marketers know this. 

By trying to scare you, or sell you on “one weird trick” to get fit, they increase their sales, but leave you, the consumer, still stranded.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name's Matt, and I'm a fitness guy.


I wasn't always a fitness guy, however. My story is a familiar one.

I grew up fairly active - after earning my black belt in Tae Kwon Do, I switched to playing basketball all four years of high school. However, I never joined a gym, or did any exercise besides basketball every day. 

When college hit, I got lazy, and gained the dreaded freshman 15, which in my case, ended up being the freshman 25.

My self-confidence was at an all-time low.

Eventually I found my way into the gym, where I learned how to workout, but it wasn't smooth sailing just yet.

I decided I wanted to make a career out of helping others feel better about themselves, and promptly switched colleges, started my new major, and have been fully immersed in the fitness world ever since. In 2011, my senior year of college, I got my first personal training certification, and started training clients right away.

How many days per week will I be spending in the gym?
