Publish your book without breaking the bank and still get brilliant results!

If you’re thinking of publishing your own book but are confused by all the
options, or if you’ve tried DIY publishing but not been satisfied
with the results, you’ve come to the right place.

DIY publishing CAN be easy, but ONLY if you know
the RIGHT way of going about it.

You know how people tell you that self-publishing is so easy a child could do it in their sleep? All you need to do is watch a YouTube video, sign up to a publishing platform like CreateSpace or Smashwords, and half an hour later, BINGO! You’re selling books!

Well, since you’re here, you probably know that’s just not true. Trying to turn your manuscript into a published book can be confusing, frustrating, time-consuming and seriously expensive. Not to mention actually selling any books and making money! But it doesn’t need to be that way.

For the past 30 years I’ve been a professional writer and editor. Twenty years ago I published my first book, on my own, the long, hard, expensive way. On the printer’s advice, I had 1,000 copies printed, only to discover that I had to distribute copies to the bookstores myself! After months of footwork and selling just enough copies to cover my print costs, I gave up and vowed I’d never self-publish again!

Then ten years later, selling PDF e-books became all the rage. In 2011–12, I became a top-selling e-book expert, with six books on their own sales-page websites. I sold thousands of books, at a great profit, and I still get regular sales but, as you probably know, when sophisticated digital e-readers like Kindle came in, PDF ebooks went the way of the dinosaurs.

So when I first heard about the ‘speed and ease’ of creating print on demand (POD) and digital books, I though it was a miracle and was totally sucked in by the BIG MYTH that electronic DIY publishing was cheap, quick and easy.

But when I REALLY looked into it, I found that all the YouTube videos and the ‘self-help’ websites only showed me what to do, not the detail of exactly how to do it with all the options explained so I could sort out the best way to do it for me and my particular books.

The more I looked the more I discovered a lot of confusion and misinformation. NOBODY really had a cheap, step-by-step, easy process to follow that was right for my exact publishing needs. And worst of all, it was almost impossible to find out the IMPLICATIONS of all those decisions I had to make.

And I’ll bet that’s been your experience too—that you’ve been overwhelmed by all the decisions you must make without understanding what they meant or the consequences of taking any particular action. Decisions like:

Do I really need to publish print-on-demand when everybody seems to be buying digital these days? If I use the ‘free’ ISBNs that the publishing platforms offer am I still the publisher? How do I get a professional book cover without spending $500? How can I get cheap print copies of my book to give to my family and friends or business associates when shipping from America is so expensive? How do I convert my Microsoft Word document to reflowable ePUB or KF8 text for digital format? What’s ePUB and KF8 anyway and do I have to learn hypertext markup language (HTML) to use it? What’s an aggregator and which one is the best to use? Will someone pirate my book if I don’t agree to Digital Rights Management? Do I go for royalties, or do pay a fixed fee to distributors, and which distributor has the best offer? Why on earth do people ‘sell’ their books for $0 on Kindle Select? What’s the best way of marketing my book when I don’t have my own webpage?

And on and on and on …
