I asked them both to have a seat and said, “I am going to tell you the real reasons why you find yourselves in the position you do today.”

It was time for me to be the source of some harsh reality…







HERE’S WHAT I HAD TO TELL THEM:







“Frankly,” I said “a lot of what’s happening to you isn’t really your fault.” Now I’m the first one to tell all my clients that their health is their own responsibility but there’s a twist here.   I was definitely NOT giving them an easy out…

“Most people of our generation have been told the same lies for decade after decade. So much so that it has become part of our culture in America to think a certain way about our nutrition. Unfortunately, most of ‘rules’ we been taught are flat-out lies.
















Remember the old Food Pyramid?  YIKES!  This was basically a prescription for getting fat!

I’m not saying this so you can use it as a crutch and NOT take action!  That somehow you can blame “the system” for the state of your health.  But when you hear how widespread the lies are, you can’t help but feel some outrage.”

They both looked a little confused. And said “What are you talking about?”

I said, “For the past several decades the food companies, the government and even the medical community have been promoting a widely accepted but completely false set of ideas.

This sounds like it borders on conspiracy.  I get it.  Give me the chance to explain…

Even though I run a gym I can tell you flat out that the workouts that you’re doing are only part of the solution.

In fact even the best workout routines are only about 25 to 30% of the answer. We know from science that weight loss is approximately 70% nutrition. The problem is if 70% of the solution is in our food and we can’t trust the people who make our food...well...how are we supposed to win?

I could see by the faces I was making them more distressed instead of calming them down, so it was time to explain exactly what I meant!

I said, “Let me give you some examples. Have you been told since you were little that FAT is bad for you?

“Of course.” they said.

“Wrong!”

“It’s a lie. We need fats for good health. We were told to exclude all fats from our diet back in the 70’s.  When we pulled out all the fat, we removed the good fats as well as the bad, and replaced those calories with sugar and other processed carbohydrates. This is widely considered to be the start of the obesity epidemic in this country.
















You have to remember the expression:

‘Fat does not make you fat; carbs make you fat.’







Lie #2:  You NEED to eat whole grains in order to be healthy.

We’ve been told that eating whole grains is a healthy thing to do, but that’s simply not the case if you’re trying to lose body fat!







The first thing my colleagues and I do when anyone asks for our help with weight loss is to tell them to STOP EATING GRAINS.  (We also recommend client minimize dairy products as well.  But more on that later…)







“But you won’t hear the food companies telling you that, because there is very little money to be made for these companies a country eating good healthy protein and vegetables. Wheat-based products are simply too profitable!

The short version is:  "We simply do not need to eat grains in order to be healthy.”

“The low-fat approach from the 70s and 80s was touted by the medical community and the government as one of the safest ways to eat. Unfortunately it was actually one of the biggest frauds ever perpetrated on the American people. As a result of this terrible advice our country got fat; really fat. To the point where we became a joke of the tourist industry and became known around the world as the ‘Fat Americans’.”

Our diet, as it stands right now – known as the "Western Diet" – IS A DISEASE PRODUCING MACHINE!

It promotes diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and of course obesity as direct results.






















All of this falls into the category of an old saying from World War II Germany.

Such is the case with our food.  People don’t really eat food anymore. We have forgotten how to eat food for foods sake. Instead we ingest a bunch of processed “nutrients and additives” as a food company calls them, and wonder why our body reacts poorly to them.  We have forgotten how to savor the selection and preparation of food as much as the eating of it.

By not sticking with “real” food, we have given the food companies a green light to tell us just about anything they want; and to convince us that almost anything they produce is healthy.

"Special interests have essentially purchased the ability to call nutritionally questionable stuff ‘good food’…all with the approval of the US government.”

That’s why I say that many of our friends, family and coworkers never stood a chance. We ate exactly what the experts all told was the right thing to eat. Unfortunately, this simply made poor quality food a part of everyday culture in this country and somehow obesity became okay.”










Obesity is higher among middle age adults, 40-59 years old (about 40%!) than among younger adults, age 20-39 (about 30%).









“Wow”, said Jim. “That’s a lot to take in.  But it’s sort of hard to argue with that when we see it every day all around us.”

Diane looked a little disgusted and added, “I’m starting to get it.  Even though a healthy diet is possible, it’s simply not probable…at least not without some kind of map to navigate all these traps!”

“I know it’s crazy, isn’t it?” I added. “But there is a way through the mess.  Let me get to that in a minute.”

“When it comes to losing fat there is another lie we have to deal with.

Lie #3:   In order to lose weight we have to give up almost everything the tastes good; including alcohol. Then we have to spend hours at the gym running on a treadmill like a crazy person.  Life has to become an endless series of abstaining and depriving.”
