I remember the day like it was yesterday because it STILL haunts me any time I stop to think about it. There I was, sitting in the Emergency room waiting room with Jenny's son.
See, Jenny used to be one of my personal training clients 2 years ago.

Jenny had stopped coming in to train with me. Last time I had talked to her, she told me
she was too busy with the bakery she owned.

She said she didn't have time to get to my training studio anymore, and wasn't feeling
too motivated to work out after 15 hour work days.
That was the last time I had talked to her.. about a year ago. And now, her son and I were waiting for the doctor to come in and tell us what was wrong.

She had collapsed at work a few hours prior and I was one of the only people her son knew and trusted enough to tell me about her being rushed to the hospital. He was a smart kid... he knew the weight she had gained wasn't healthy and probably had something to do with why she was in the hospital. He could see, as plain as day, the struggles she had with keeping the weight off.

He knew I cared deeply about all of my clients, and his Mom was no exception. He told me in the waiting room that he called me because his Mom spoke highly of me, and he thought I'd be the one who could help her lose weight. So when I got the call from him, I rushed over to the hospital. And here we were, sitting and waiting.

A few minutes passed when a nurse came out. She said they just brought her back from Intensive care... so she told us that we could go in and see her. We both walked in together... our hearts pounding as we turned the corner to see her lying there in bed, with tubes and wires hooked up everywhere on her. I sat down in the chair right next to her, pulled it up close to the bed and grabbed her hand.

“Hello stranger” I said with a smile... long time no see.” As I saw her laying there... part of me felt like I had failed Jenny. But I knew I could only help my clients so much. Other than give them the advice, information, and motivation... ultimately it was up to them to actually put it into action my advice and stick with it.

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting... a doctor came in and sat down. I remember hearing the shocking words coming from the doctor... “Jenny, you suffered a heart attack. Thankfully you got here just in time. But still... consider this your wake up call. If you don't change what you're doing, you're not going to live long enough to see this young man grow up.

The doc was pointing at her son... and Jenny and I both got teary eyed. Those words stung us both, but I'm sure it hit Jenny like a ton of bricks. I loved Jenny like a sister, so this was troubling news to me as well. We both just sat there, with a look of shock on our faces. Like I said, I had lost touch with her. From time to time, I'd think about her and wonder if she was keeping up with the exercises I had taught her.

Obviously the answer to that question came as we were listening to the doctor describe how he was giving Jenny a year or two to live unless she dramatically changed her eating habits, lost weight, and improved her cholesterol and blood pressure. Again, part of me felt like I failed somewhere. Jenny had come to see me about 2 years ago... looking for a way to lose weight that didn't take a lot of time.

When we first met, she told me she tried everything... diets, weight loss shakes, pills, boxed meals... all of it. She said she spent a ton of money on fat burners that left her feeling nervous and jittery. She tried the point system... but hated standing up in front of a group of strangers. She even forced herself to do a ton of exercise and try to restrict her calories as much as possible by eating just salads all day. But no matter what she did, she never saw any weight come off, which is what made her more frustrated.

As sort of a “last resort”, she found my website online and decided to come in to see me at my personal training studio. I say “last resort” because Jenny didn't have a lot of time to work out, since she owned a busy bakery downtown. She put in 15 hour work days at the bakery and when she got home, was too tired to do much of anything.

We created a work out plan that didn't take a lot of time and I also had her eating less and less calories than she was eating now. And in just a little over 30 days, Jenny lost 12 pounds of unwanted blubber. 30 days after that, she lost another 14 pounds. So in just 60 days, she lost 26 pounds. Jenny kept working at it... coming to see me 3 times a week. She said she looked and felt so much better after losing 26 pounds in 60 days.







But then, just like that... she vanished.
I called and left messages on her voice mail but I never
heard back.

A few months went by and I'd call her to see how she was doing.
Again, I found out that she wasn't doing great when her son called to tell me she had collapsed at work. So there we were, sitting in the hospital together.
That's when the doctor told us that she suffered her first heart attack by being severely overweight and out of shape. And she was only 49-years old. She started crying when I grabbed her hand and told her I'd do anything to help her make a change, as long as she was willing to do what I said. I told her it was tough love from this point out, because her life depended on it. I knew it was time to get real with her. I felt I owed this to her, as a friend and a trainer.

“Jenny, if you keep eating how you're eating, working long hours, and not exercising... it WILL catch up with you. You're on a dangerous path to ending back here in the hospital or worse... dying if you don't change what you're doing. And you're going to leave your son without a mother. I'm sure you want to be there for him and watch him grow up, graduate, and have a family of his own.”

I knew it was a tough thing to say... but we were at a hospital.
So this was about as real as it could get. I begged her to look at this as
her wake up call and let me help her to lose weight, so she could
minimize her risk of another life threatening heart attack.

“I'm going to find a solution for you... one where I can help you lose
the weight you NEED to lose. But I promise, I'll find a way for you to
fit it into your busy schedule.” “I'm going to make sure you don't have
to diet, give up all your favorite foods, or spend a ton of time in the
gym, or working out with me.”

Jenny opened up a bit with me, while I was sitting there with her. She was usually very happy, but I could tell this put a scare into her. She told me when she got to 200 pounds, she found herself frightened of the potential health issues her weight could cause. The fact that she had a son...she didn't want him growing up embarrassed by her... or worse... growing up WITHOUT her. She said she was horrified at putting her kid in the situation of having to watch Mom die young.

Like I said, when we first met, she told me she was frustrated with her weight but didn't have a ton of time to work out. Unfortunately, she'd come home late at night after work and eat a big meal while watching TV.

She'd see infomercials promoting the latest and greatest diet or exercise contraption. And thinking that she had to do SOMETHING, she'd call up and order it. But when it came time to actually using it... that never happened. In fact, her treadmill soon became a place for hanging clothes for work. And her diet books gathered dust.. unopened.

Since she wasn't making progress, she gave me a call and set a time for her to come in and talk. When Jenny first came in, we got to talking and she basically told me, point blank “Shawn, I just don't have a ton of time to work out. Like I said, I learned Jenny owned a bakery in Austin and that most of her days started at 4am.

Because her entire bakery was dependent on her to keep the doors open, she worked a LOT of hours. She said that she got so busy trying to run the bakery, she had to put exercise last so she could try to keep the business a float during the bad economy.

She couldn't afford to hire help... so she worked 15 hour days. She didn't have time to break away to work out or eat healthy. And needless to say, working as a baker she had cakes, pastries, and pies around her. So she'd usually cave in and eat a few cookies, cakes, and brownies here and there. But the problem was, the snacks added up. Combined with the fact she was too tired to work out when she got home, it was a recipe for disaster. The next thing she knew... she packed on a LOT of weight.

She said it really affected how she felt about herself. She felt embarrassed when she had to shop at the Plus size shop for her clothes! She said she felt insecure and self-conscious when she was anywhere outside of work. She never went to the beach or to a pool because she was horrified to put on a bathing suit.

Worst of all, she said she'd lose her breath when lifting bags of flour and sugar at work. She said she used to joke with people about making muffins for her bakery... while having a muffin top herself!
But like I said, the first breakthrough came when she called and I started having her do exercises I had been trained to use when I got my personal trainer certification.

And I honestly thought we had made a lot of progress. But like I mentioned... she had such little time because of working at the bakery, she stopped coming for our training appointments. A year went by when I got the call. Her son told me it was during a recent truck delivery of bulk items when Jenny collapsed outside on the walkway while unloading the truck. Thankfully the truck driver called 911.

And now here I was... sitting with her in the hospital, feeling like I didn't do enough to keep her moving towards her goals. And that pain inside me... the feeling that I let her down... that would soon lead to the most amazing discoveries I've ever came across as a personal trainer.
