I come from a banking background. It’s always amazed me what people do with their money. Some of my favorite clients are elderly women who CD rate shop. They’ll scour the newspaper and call every bank looking for the best rate.
When I first got into banking those rates were actually quite competitive and often times contentious; somewhere around the 5% APY range. Yes, ANNUAL percentage yield. Keep that in the back of your mind for later.
Have you ever seen a sweet little old lady yell at a 30-something that she wants a 0.50% higher rate or she’s taking all of her money out of the bank? Like I said, contentious.
And again, for a 5% ANNUALY yielding CD. On $100,000 that’s a return of $5,000 a year. Not terrible, but can you retire off of $5,000 a year?! I don’t think so.
Throw in a recession, and CD rates have dropped dramatically, hovering around 0.20% (yep, still 2/10 of 1 percent)... Now, that same $100,000 is only bringing in $200.
$200!!! That is not a better path to retirement.
Another example? A friend of mine won a 1 million dollar settlement and immediately put half of it in a brokerage account. $500,000 probably went a long way towards that brokers “new money” goal.
They showed my friend prospectuses, wined and dined him, and made him feel like, well, a million bucks. The numbers they showed him were quite appealing, roughly 20% a year. In this economic climate that’s incredible! $500,000 should produce $100,000 on an annual basis. Now THAT is my kind of retirement!
Only problem? Within the first 6 months the brokerage firm LOST $100,000 with their select mutual funds. Granted, the brokerage firm told my friend to keep the long term picture in mind, and to still trust them with his money. After all, they are trained professionals. They who get paid based on how much YOU invest, and how many trades you do with them…
Ok, enough beating up the brokerage firms. A good broker is worth his weight in gold. Albeit, hard to find.
What’s my point in saying all of this? I wanted you to understand WHY we started this company. We know there is a better way.

This is a Covered Call. RJET (Republic Airways) is $2.87. The Next month $3 call options are 35¢ to sell. 1,000 shares would cost $2,870. (Half, or about $1,440 on margin). Now the market will give you 1,000 times 35¢, or $350 to buy your stock at $3 for the next three weeks. If the stock goes above $3 and you sold it at that price, you'd take in another $130. That's the $2.87 up to $3—or 13¢, taking in the $130.
