Your Over 50 Fitness Savior

This article is for men and women over 50 who are hungry or maybe even desperate to get more fit and to turn their body clock back 10, 15, or even 20 years or more.

And while that may sound good enough already, what I propose in this article also allows you to be able to do your favorite physical activities without “just getting older” limits and for you to enjoy great health while looking and feeling like a million bucks.

Chances are though that you may be skeptical about such promises as you may have tried other solutions before with similar claims and hype filled infomercial guarantees that “others swear by” that ended up leaving you feeling disappointed from your lack of results.

Maybe you have already pledged to yourself that you won’t fall for any more “too good to be true” programs filled with fountain of youth and “new body” promises that you suspect are all smoke and mirrors.

You may have vowed not to be fooled again and instead just accept the theory of average minded victims that “getting old sucks” and that it “is what it is”.

Who am I and Why Might You Consider Listening to Me?

My name is Fred “The Fit Food Dude” Schafer and I have just written 50FIT.

Some of you may recognize me as the guy who spoke at your conference as I spend a good portion of my time keynote speaking at health, wellness and fitness conferences across America ([www.fredstrikes.com]).

My story and what it means for the rest of your story

I am 56 years old and have been both studying and training to achieve high performance health and fitness for the past 41 years. It all began back in 1974 in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA when I was a 14 year old kid.

The reason I was so motivated back in 1974 to become fit, more athletic and healthy is that I was exactly the opposite! I was an unhealthy, pathetically weak, non-athletic, sickly, scrawny awkward kid with little self-confidence. I like to say that I was “physiquely challenged”.

That condition can be rough on a kid living in a tough town like Pittsburgh. Plus, I wanted to play high school football and knew that I needed to add some muscle for football and life in general unless I wanted to spend my high school years feeling like death warmed over most of the time, sitting on the sidelines and getting my butt kicked.

But when I announced my plans to build my body into a healthier and stronger one, the mocking hit me like a hurricane on the gulf coast. Kids in the neighborhood laughed in my face while insults were hurled that I would always be a “skinny weakling” and other names not fit to print here.

Even people in my own family poured on the doubt. “Why don’t you just be happy with the body you were born with?’ and “you’re not meant to be a physical guy, you should concentrate on using your brain” other well meaning detractors felt they needed to tell me.

But I knew my life was destined for mediocrity in some areas if I did not get more physically fit and strong to compete in the arena of life.

Plus, I had read the stories of Benjamin Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt.

Benjamin Franklin transformed his body and health by doggedly working out with barbells and swimming every day while his buddies mocked him. Years later his buddies worked for him as he worked to change history. He continued his fitness system throughout his life.

Teddy Roosevelt’s father had instructed Teddy as a youth to work hard to improve his poor health and scrawny body. His father felt that Teddy’s lack of physical health would hold him back from being successful later on and possibly limit his life.

So Teddy Roosevelt transformed himself into a physical powerhouse, and like Ben Franklin, stuck with it for a lifetime. He went on to accomplish more in his life than most of us even dream about.

Hearing that inspired me and I became laser like focused on getting more fit and strong. Despite ongoing discouragement, I pestered my parents for over a year until I finally convinced them to get me a set of barbells (and apparently a basketball) for Christmas in December 1974!

At first, progress was unbearably slow and even with a few months of dedicated training it seemed like my body was never going to respond as you can see in the picture below from March of 1975.

Finally that special moment happened when things took a turn for the better. The High School Football Coach saw me in the hallway between classes one day and asked if I had been lifting weights?

Apparently I had somehow created a muscle on my body! That little encouragement that my work had actually produced a noticeable result was all I needed. (And likely all you need too) I became even more committed to working out and better nutrition.

For the next two years I plunged into studying fitness and nutrition and worked against all odds. But the negativity and insults seemed to grow even stronger. Upper classmen, teachers, my friends and even my parents, brothers and sisters kept warning me of getting my hopes up too much.

I was constantly bombarded with put downs and criticism like, “you are wasting your time, weight lifting will hurt you, stunt your growth, cause hair loss (joking), etc, etc.

But I had to believe a person could use both their brain and their body to build a healthy, high performance physique and victorious life. So, while my high school friends were out partying on Friday nights (I did my share though!) I spent many of my high school evenings in my musty attic gym training and blaring (and singing along with) the Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin.

Gradually, little by little I added more and more strength, health, energy and a newfound level of confidence. Some would even say arrogance!

Below is a picture from my high school graduation party in June of 1977. I had just thrown one of my buddies into the hotel pool and apparently thought this act deserved a flex pose.

Though not trim and slim it is clear to see that I had added muscle, size and strength. My goal at that time was to play college football as a lineman, so becoming thinner was not the priority then.

I was now even more hooked on the benefits of fitness training and eating wholesome foods and something in my spirit was also strengthened. I was a somewhat troubled and confused kid looking for hope that I could make it in this life. My physical training efforts gave me that hope at that time.

What I learned through my physical training and more disciplined eating were principles that have helped me to be successful and hopeful in other areas of my life. These principles can help you in your over 50 future.

What I learned is there is always hope we can make life positively different and better. The key is to find out what works and then to keep doing it, making small amounts of progress each day. Those improvements can snowball and add up quickly!

I remained dedicated to my training all the way through college graduation. After graduation things changed as I found the corporate work world posed different and more imposing demands from my previous years.

Working in corporate America for a national restaurant chain meant insanely long hours, crushing stress and ample opportunity to eat and drink too much.

My training and discipline went out the window. Sure enough, problems quickly began to show up in my life. Problems like growing body fat, weak soft muscle, declining energy, poor sleep, mild depression and an overly edgy attitude towards others and life in general. One of my co-workers started calling me, “Mr. Miserable” due to my increasingly negative, slightly hostile and noticeably pessimistic attitude.

I didn’t realize how de-conditioned (trainer language for out of shape) and fat I had become until a trip home to visit my parents and my dad not so gently told me that I had become fat!. Little did I need him to tell me what I already knew as my scale was showing close to 240 pounds!

I already knew that I needed to get back to training and better eating as watching my weight jump from 190 pounds to nearly 240 was a clue. What finally got my attention though was a numbing and almost paralyzing level of low back pain.

Several years earlier while playing college football I had begun to experience significant pain in my hip and lower back and was diagnosed by our team doctor with a severe case of scoliosis. I was eventually able to get that pain to subside at a manageable level and keep playing football.

How I did that, almost unknowingly, was through increasing the consistency and effectiveness of my work-outs during football season.

But now, due to a new “corporate America” lifestyle and nearly a year of not working out and abusing my body with too much unhealthy food, drink and unhealthy stress, the lower back and hip pain had returned full force.

After visits to several doctors I heard the same news. If I did not get surgery, my situation would continue to deteriorate as I aged. The thinking, I’m sure, was that as I aged I would grow weaker and my bones would get weaker too which would lead to a further deteriorating spine.

One doctor suggested to me that unless I got surgery I could look forward to potentially being a “cripple” by the time I was fifty. I seriously considered surgery at the time but also remembered that back when I had been consistently training there was, for the most part, non-existent low back discomfort and pain.

I asked the doctor if there was any danger in my putting surgery off for a year and instead focus of strengthening my body to see if that could help. The doctor, though skeptical, said that waiting one year was acceptable.

With that in mind, I returned to my fitness and nutrition research and wrote up a new and improved work-out and nutrition system. In a few short months, not only was the pain gone completely, but so was all of the excess body fat I had accumulated. In fact, I had become more fit than ever! (see picture from summer of 1984)

Summer of 1984, 30 years ago. That’s me in the center with my training partners Dave and Bud. The methods used then are much the same as the ones you will discover in 50FIT.

These methods have proven wrong the “medical experts” who predicted I could be a cripple at 50 if I did not get surgery.

Also proven mistaken were the many doubters and detractors that mocked me saying my methods were incorrect and that I should be “doing more cardio” etc.

Sadly, many of the naysayers in my life are either no longer with us, have very poor health themselves or have had to undergo several excruciating surgeries to try to repair themselves.

On the other hand, the picture above is from 30 years ago and I have never looked back. Now, at 56, I am in even better shape (minus the hair) than I was in the picture above.

And, Lord willing, I will be in even better shape at 65, 75, 85 and maybe even 95 (Good to have big goals right!) than I am today.

You might be thinking, well great for you Fred, why should I care?

Well the reason you might care, is that the secrets I accidentally discovered in my effort to avoid surgery can transform your over 50 fitness, health and wellness too.

Through all of that and the amount of energy and time required and expended I have managed to maintain my fitness, health and wellness lifestyle. As a result I am a rock solid expert in fitness, health and wellness sustainability.

A 20, 30 and even 40 year old trainer does not know yet what you and I do because they have not faced what we over 50’s have.

But what also makes me different is that I have to train to overcome pain

Like most people, I want to feel and look my best. I want to fully participate in life and protect my health and live a long, rewarding and enjoyable life.

But for me, there is another motivator. If I go more than 1-2 days without some sort of physical training, my low back and hip pain begins to return. In addition to that pain I begin to feel sluggish and can’t seem to think straight. My energy starts to drop and my mood becomes less enthusiastic to say the least.

So, I have had to learn how to maintain my training in the fastest, easiest, most enjoyable and most effective way possible and I will teach you how to do the same.

And if you do, the results you get may positively stun you.

Furthermore, when trying to improve health and fitness we are often directed to substandard solutions that don’t deal directly with the hidden problem creating so much of the over 50 (and much younger) sluggish, flabby, pain and disease ridden, injury prone, weak and overall “de-conditioned” unhealthy and unfit bodies we seem so willing to tolerate.

But once you know about this almost mysterious issue sabotaging your body and health and how to avoid it and counter it, you will be able to:
Feel like a teenager again with more energy surging through your veins than you have felt in decades. Possess and possibly surpass the metabolism of your 20′s. Improve your posture and shrink your waist and midsection. Sculpt a lean, healthy, more attractive body that makes you feel more confident and self-assured in your swimsuit or birthday suit. Still be able to eat your favorite foods occasionally and not stress over what diet you should be on or worry about everything you eat. Restore hormonal balance naturally without resorting to harmful drugs. Kiss back and knee pain goodbye and say hello to the beauty and joy of moving freely and even with wild abandon (when you get the urge). Look 10 years younger in the next 28 days. Possibly lower risk of high blood pressure, type II diabetes, heart disease and cancer or reduce symptoms of these issues through “systemic’ health training. The Almost Unheard of Health Problem Affecting Millions

But first, let’s tackle the true culprit that is stealing most of your beyond 50 fitness, health, health and wellness.

And to make matters worse, also possibly reducing your wealth, emotional energy and time through costly doctor visits, prescriptions and surgeries that in many cases still haven’t fixed your real problem!

By all means, visit your doctor if you are facing health troubles. But it still makes sense that to make things better or to avoid the messes we’ve described above it would be great to get a more accurate diagnosis of your problem in the first place.

And that is what I propose to do for you right now. The real issue that is creating most of the health, wellness and fitness problems of millions of over 50 adults is a condition that is largely ignored by most health “experts”, and even the medical profession.

The fact is that this condition is creating a massive amount of substandard (yes, I like the word substandard) health and fitness and unnecessary suffering in the lives of millions of people

And, though I may not know you personally, I can safely assume that you too may likely be a victim of this fitness, health and potentially life threatening condition.

This condition is known as “Sarcopenia”. Sarcopenia is a Greek word that means, “poverty of the flesh”. Sarcopenia is seen most often in the heath care profession when working with sick and elderly patients. In that case, we simply call it “muscle wasting”.



When a patient goes into the “muscle wasting” phase, they are in danger. That is because once they start to rapidly lose muscle, they obviously begin to lose strength. As they lose strength they lose energy to fight to regain their health and their immune system is weakened as well.

Their muscle also significantly affects their metabolism which affects the health of their cells, the amount of calories they burn and their appetite for healthy foods.

So, if a person is experiencing sarcopenia (muscle wasting), they have a few serious fitness and health problems going on.

You, however, are probably not sitting in a hospital bed with a life threatening disease watching your muscle quickly withering away as you read this. Yet at the same time, unless you are purposely working to stop it each day, your muscle is likely slowly leaking away from your body a very small fraction each day.

You, in actuality, are suffering from a simply slower version of sarcopenia. The only good news you may be able to take comfort in is that you are not alone. Millions of Americans are in the same what I call “lifestyle sarcopenia” boat.

How so you ask?

This is so because research has shown that the average American loses ½ pound of muscle tissue each year after the age of 30 (probably late 20’s these days). That is 5 pounds per decade!


Furthermore, studies by health researcher Wayne Westcott of the YMCA shows that the average American loses 15 pounds of muscle between the ages of 30-60.

So many of the poor health issues people over 50 are facing is in many cases directly related to their muscle loss. For example, a majority of people with back and knee pain have lost their muscle and strength and now they are, “feeling the pain”.

The primary reasons for this sarcopenia lifestyle muscle loss are declining and ineffective physical activity, poor nutrition on a consistent basis and too much ongoing negative stress. Stress hormones break down the body, including muscle and bone tissue.

Unfortunately some people who should know better promote sarcopenia as being, “age related”. As in the banner shown above.

While I agree with the idea that sarcopenia is the number one threat to your health and vitality, I do not agree at all that it is age related. It is not because of your age! That is simply a myth and an excuse too many people use to eliminate themselves from their potential best.

Sarcopenia and muscle leaking are almost entirely lifestyle related!


The main cause of “lifestyle” sarcopenia is declining, ineffective and inconsistent physical activity, poor nutrition and too much unhealthy stress.

That is why I created 50FIT!

50FIT is out to prove that the “age related” sarcopenia theory and mindset is wrong because it is not the truth. Plus, it is just plain wrong to make millions of people think they are victims of their age. That causes me to rage!

OK maybe not rage but definitely get angry. Yes, it makes me very mad to see a message being spread that is not true and causes people to feel sad and blue. The truth is there is much over 50 year olds can do to make our lives better as we age. Especially our fitness and health!



Yes, there are some obvious aging changes we all eventually experience. But when it comes to the leanness, body composition (ratio of fat to muscle), health, bone strength, energy and functional ability, aging changes are minimal from decade to decade as long as you keep your muscle intact and functionally strong.

Dan Ritchie, PHD and an expert in functional aging points out that “master athletes” in their 60’s and 70’s can usually not match their personal best records from their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. While some master level athletes over 50 actually do surpass their records from their youth, most do lose a step or two in their later years.

However, many of those master level athletes can still outperform many of the younger athletes they compete with and easily beat less skilled people 20, 30 and 40 years younger than them.

Loss of capacity due to aging is minimal if you know what to do.


Of the factors outlined above the number one contributor to sarcopenia is declining and INEFFECTIVE physical activity. All physical activity is good and beneficial of course. Nonetheless, some forms are better and just a few are best at preventing or reversing of sarcopenia or what I also call “muscle leaking.”

And, if being active, lean and healthy and living a long full life and looking and feeling your best is important to you, your muscle leaking condition is setting you up ever so slowly for the exact opposite.

The dilemma of “leaking” muscle

You see, as your muscle leaks a little each day you become a little weaker, a little less energetic and a little slower in your movements. As this happens, your metabolism slows which means your body burns less calories each day which means that the muscle you are leaking is now slowly being replaced by body fat unless you are also reducing calories more each day.

Muscle tissue does not change into fat tissue. That is physically impossible. What can happen though is that muscle tissue can be replaced by fat tissue. Especially if you keep eating the same amount as you were.

But as you leak muscle you are not only a little weaker, less energetic and slower, but also feeling less youthful and growing fatter or at least flabbier and softer (less toned) than you were a week ago.

And though you know you should probably get some physical activity or exercise, each day that your muscle leaks away you feel less and less like getting up and moving. Think of it this way. Your muscle is the physical power source and life force of the body. As you let it leak away each day, you are slowly losing your power.

And, I know it sounds dramatic to say this, but each day you let your muscle leak away you have lost a small slice your life. Why? Because muscle truly is your physical life source.

As you slowly lose muscle, you are ever so slowly starting to lose your life

You may want to argue against what I just said but you cannot argue (well you could I suppose) that as your muscle leaks you are speeding up your aging process and possibly putting yourself on the path to premature disability and death.

Wow, that sounds pretty dramatic right? Let’s break it down. Where does heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, knee, hip and back pain, excess body fat (obesity for the PC crowd), arthritis and at least some if not all forms of cancer come from?
