There are seven CRUCIAL MISTAKES coaches and instructors make when attempting to teach explosive rotational power…

 

MISTAKE #1: Escape trouble with this EMERGENCY 911 intervention

My name is Joey Myers, and I’m the founder of the Hitting Performance Lab.  I’m a survivor – much like you are.  And, I want to commend you for a valiant effort.  Pat yourself on the back for wading through all the online hitting muck… 

YouTube videos.  Google searches.  You’ve shamefully undressed Yahoo with your eyes, and because you love their shiny new commercials so much, you’ve frisked Bing too.

I know how you feel…believe me; I’ve been caught up in paralysis by analysis.    

Now, you may be new to coaching baseball or softball, lack knowledge by experience, and/or have absolutely no idea where to start.  Heck, you probably don’t know WHO to trust with your kid’s swing on the Blogosphere. 

I have a related, but slightly off-topic, question for you…

Why do we power through a super-sized bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos?  Because the salty taste?  The crunch of the chip?  The immediate dopamine release to the brain after eating just a few?  You probably answered yes to all of these, but there’s more to it… 

The truth is, according to the book Healing The Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases, by Charlotte Gerson and Beata Bishop, we aren’t giving our body the nutrients it needs, so it continually craves more food until it feels nutritionally satisfied.  And most of the time it never does, so our greasy body swells and/or decomposes from the inside out.

Here’s what I’m getting at… 

You don’t feel satisfied when looking online for the truth about explosive rotational power because the information contained online and in books is incomplete.  You crave more.  You want more.  You may even think more is better.  But, you’re just not getting fed. 

There’s a missing link. 

You fall into the trap of paralysis by analysis…and you need an emergency 911 intervention.

The reason for over-thinking is this…


The hitting information that’s out there is so bullet riddled with slow motion analysis video.  We’ve been taught by Mike Epstein to teach what we see in slow motion video, not what we think we see.  This is fine and dandy, but as you’ll soon find out, hidden from our computer or iPad screen’s view is what’s not seen that really makes the difference in explosive rotational power.


 


MISTAKE #2: Why hitting mechanics are widely taught INEFFECIENTLY


Coaches and instructors would be surprised to find out that every day they train explosive mechanics very inefficiently (at least according to the brain).  “Load the hips”…”Turn the hips”…”Straighten the front leg”…“Throw the hands.” 


These cues are roadblocks to how the brain efficiently delegates functional movement patterns, such as: squatting, lunging, stepping, pushing, pulling, twisting, and bending.


When it comes to the swing, the brain LOVES moving in (or a combination of) these functional movement patterns.  In other words, the brain has a difficult time connecting the dots with a cue like “explode the hips.” 


According to Dr. Erik Dalton in his collaborative book Dynamic Body,


“Modern Science reveals the brain does not recognize individual muscle activities due to lack of practical purpose.”  He adds, “In motor learning of an athletic skill, such as a swing, the muscles develop a pattern after repeated physical motion.  This pattern becomes ingrained in the brain so that, at any given time, the motion and mechanics of the swing can be recalled with success.”


Key principals of human locomotion are the same no matter what explosive rotational movement you watch.  With hitting, we use a combination of lunging, twisting, pulling, and stepping functional movement patterns.

Now, I want to apologize in advance…the following will upset A LOT of people.  But I can back all of it with proven Science…


 


MISTAKE #3: Unique MLB swing tip that has lasted 70+ years


Another crucial mistake we make is we analyze the BIG guys too much.  Albert Pujols (6’3”, 230lbs)…Josh Hamilton (6’4”, 225lbs)…Miguel Cabrera (6’4”, 240lbs).  We do this knowing the fact (at least subconsciously), according to Wikipedia, that the average male height in the US is 5 foot, 10 inches (females 5 foot, 5 inches).  And the average male weighs 177 pounds!


Did you know…


The best most consistent explosive rotational power hitters aren’t even six foot, AND don’t weigh more than 180lbs!?   


Hank Aaron at 6’0” 180lbs, in my opinion, did what no other human being on this planet has done on the highest stage for a baseball player with his body size…in 23 years of MLB service, he hit an average of 33 homeruns and 27 doubles per season, and had a career batting average of .305 and OPS of .928.


That is consistent explosive rotational power. 


From the other side of the planet, here’s another example…


Sadaharu Oh at 5’10” 175lbs is the career home-run leader in Japanese baseball, with 868 lifetime dingers.  With 21 years of professional Japanese baseball service, that’s an average of 41 dingers per year.  In today’s game, don’t you think he’d be playing in the US?  Maybe not hitting as many homers, but still…868!


How could this be, for two guys who don’t weigh more than 180lbs soaking wet!?  Are they just anomalies?  Outliers like Bill Gates sitting in a room of freshly minted millionaires?      


They didn’t have access to cutting edge physical training like players do nowadays (or the high class PED’s).  Did these guys, “walk away from their hands”?   Did they, “load their hips”?  Did they swing, “down and through”?  Nope.  What they did was more elegant than that.  


What they did has been hidden from view for over 70 years.  Even the best hitting gurus of today were asleep when the memo went out.


 


The Truth about Explosive Rotational Power 


There is concrete Science backing what I’m about the reveal to you in The Truth About Explosive Rotational Power.  It’s the same natural system Hank Aaron and Sadaharu Oh benefited from, over their hearty careers, with their threadlike bodies.


It’s NOT a loading of the hips.  It’s NOT striving for separation in the hip and shoulder angles.  It’s NOT even having strong wrists and hands (which are irrelevant when it comes to explosive rotational power).  The Truth About Explosive Rotational Power is…muscles don’t even play a large role!! 


Our bodies have their own ‘Catapult Loading System’…the same one kangaroos use to jump, and gazelles use to bound for miles and miles without getting tired.


Here’s a quote from the textbook Dynamic Body,


“Research led by Tetsuo Fukunaga, professor in the department of life science at the University of Tokyo, showed that the Gastrocnemius muscle (or calf) and the Achilles tendon actually function as a catapult.”


Explosive rotational power comes from two little known internal forces acting within the body, AND from outside the body.  Tapping into these two separate systems allows a hitter to improve quickly, get the most out their body, and as a result, hit with more explosive rotational power than bigger athletes.


And the good news is…


Any athlete, no matter the size, shape, age, gender, or experience level can etch them into their swings for better improvement!


 


MISTAKE #4: No wonder youth athletes have trouble hitting with explosive rotational power


Another major roadblock to explosive rotational power, especially when dealing with young athletes, is how-to properly address their developmental weaknesses as they grow into their young-adult bodies.


Have you found yourself in the midst of these eight CRITICAL teaching challenges experienced by young athletes (between ages 5-13)? 


Heavy focus is on performance, versus movement improvement.
This is the crucial time when a young athlete’s Neuromuscular System is developing. 
Not enough support in systematically progressing early movement development.
High risk for injury.  Example, teaching an 8 year old how to throw a curveball, so their team can get another “W”.
Underprepared coaches lead to yelling, belittling, and negative criticism…it’s how THEY were taught, and all they know.  The Rutgers men’s basketball situation is an extreme example, but I currently see shades of this at my old High School.
This kind of sport participation leads to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, then burnout.
Studies show early sport specialization (say, in baseball) leads to extreme muscle imbalance, and also burnout.  And,
Youth sports and training have become exercises in pressure and fear…consequences for low aptitude is severe.
Any one of these can prevent a young athlete from reaching their full potential.  Combinations of them can doom the player to fail from the beginning.

As an example, here’s why point #3 above is so critical,

As Gray Cook, co-founder of the Functional Muscle Screen (FMS), says about how important mobility and stability are to the human body, “You can’t fire a canon from a canoe.” 

In other words, if a player has a movement dysfunction, the brain puts high performance on the back burner.  This athlete runs a high risk for injury.  And most importantly, the brain doesn’t allow a clean download of the key explosive rotational power principals.

MISTAKE #5: Hitting is Hard.  Teaching (not showing) it is even MORE Difficult.


Not only are we facing a youth development crisis, but what’s being taught, better yet “shown” to us, about hitting with explosive rotational power is flawed.  There exists a communications gap between the teacher and the student.


Ted Williams once said, “Hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult things to do in any sport.”  I want to revise his statement to reflect:


“Hitting a baseball (or softball) consistently with power is THE most difficult thing to do in ANY sport.”


We understand this.  But as a coach or instructor, are we just “showing” young athletes, or are we “teaching” them?  Can you get a 5-year-old to repeat what you want them to do with their movement?


“But 5 years old is too young to start with technical instruction,” you say.  Here lies the root of the problem.


Gymnastics contain the most complicated bodyweight movements in all sports.  And in China, they start as young as 2-3 years old.  Same in Russia for their female tennis stars.  Here are their secrets…it’s all about:


Breaking down complicated skills into digestible chunks,
Using simple cues to get the point across, and
Putting in the right repetitions (super slow ones if you have to, but it can be done).
According to the book Talent Code, by Daniel Coyle,

“Every human movement, thought, or feeling is a precisely timed electric signal traveling through a chain of neurons—a circuit of nerve fibers.  Myelin is the insulation that wraps these nerve fibers and increases signal strength, speed, and accuracy.  The more we fire a particular circuit, the more myelin optimizes that circuit, and the stronger, faster, and more fluent our movements and thoughts become.”

It’s said myelin doesn’t care who you are…or what kind of money you make (or don’t make)…or where you find yourself on the planet.  It ONLY cares about what you DO with yourself.  Myelin is known as the stuff of talent.

This holds true for a 5 year old just as it does for a 21 year old.  And actually the younger the athlete, the bigger impression we can make on their Neuromuscular System.

Myelin’s role in learning a new skill can be used for good or evil.  Paul Chek, a world renowned elite Strength & Conditioning Coach, said it takes 3,000 reps to unwind a bad habit, and 300 to set a new one in stone. 

This is why it’s better to learn new skills at a younger age, because the bad habits haven’t burrowed their way into our brain just yet. 

And as a result, when we teach the wrong movements, the body remembers them.  This point is critical when setting out to learn The Truth About Explosive Rotational Power.

 

MISTAKE #6: Unique MLB explosive rotational power technique (got it all wrong?)

Albert Einstein said, “Everything should be as simple as possible.  But not simpler.”  Coaches often make things more complicated than they need to be.  We think coaching cues like “throw the hands” or “load and explode the hips” are simple. 

Not only are these ‘simple’ cues difficult for a youth hitter to feel and practice correctly, they’re hard for the brain to process.

What’s more…


Albert Einstein also talked about whenever looking for the truth in a theory (like he did for Relativity), the more simple and true the theory rings, then its principals should be seen in other disciplines.


You see, hitting is unique to baseball, but explosive rotational power is NOT.  In other words, the principals to hit with consistent power are also found in other explosive rotational athletes, besides baseball and softball. 


The problem is, nobody has bothered to pick up on them.  The reason why?  Because no one has bothered to dig in the right places.  Until now.


I’m definitely not a self-proclaimed guru on hitting, by any means.  I make mistakes in judgment (my wife will tell you), and if I’m proved wrong, I do my best to humbly correct coarse.  I try to keep an open mind because I know there are smarter people than me out there in the world. 


I prefer standing on the shoulders of giants.  Although, I do possess this passionate curiosity (which is both a blessing and a curse), to look outside common baseball circles for ideas to test and challenge current hitting dogmas. 


Baseball may be unique in its own corner of the sports world, but not in how humans are designed to move.  There are universal explosive rotational power principals that are unseen to the untrained eye. 


Not only are these hidden principals found in other powerful rotational athletes, they’re backed by Science.


 


MISTAKE #7: Does this worry you about your hitting research…


You never feel satisfied.  You’re forced to take the “guru’s” word for it because they’re suppose to “know” what they’re doing.  They say they’ve done the research.  They say they’ve looked at thousands of hours of motion analysis video (like it’s a badge of honor). 


But what they’re REALLY doing is regurgitating the old stuff, mixing in their ‘take’, and dressing it back up in new clothes.  And God forbid, if anything is backed by Science!


I mentioned before that coaches and instructors have fallen prey to looking at too much motion analysis video, and have lost sight of the forest for the trees.  Describing what we see on slow motion video isn’t enough.  What lies unseen should interest us more when it comes to explosive rotational power.


Sure with some hitting experts, there may be a trial-and-error factor, but this can take a long time to validate.  Why not stand on the shoulders of giants.  Listen to egg-heads much smarter than me is my motto.
