My ideal of personal freedom has always involved travel.

I’ve travelled to some of the world's most unforgiving places,
including Mongolia, Tibet, Nicaragua, and North Korea, by Russian
jeep, motorcycle, dugout canoe, horse and camel. But no trip had the
same soul-shaking impact as the first time I set out alone on the
road. I wrote about it in my first book, _Vagabond Dreams: Road Wisdom
from Central America_.

As Editor-at-Large (Europe) for _Outpost_, I travel regularly on
assignment to write major features for the magazine. My work has been
showcased extensively in print and visual media, including Toronto’s
_Eye Weekly_, _CBC Radio_ and on the primetime CTV television show

feature “Taklamakan: The Worst Desert in the World” was nominated

You'd think all this work would keep me out of trouble, but somehow
it doesn't. From run-ins with communist militaries, to physical
altercations with the secret police of a certain Asian country, to
survival situations on the Mongolian steppe with two Swedish girls and
a very small tent, mischief continues to stalk me despite publishing
deadlines. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

I BELIEVE IN ONLY TAKING ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO WERE SUCCESSFUL at
the stuff I’m asking them about -- simply because following their
advice will make my life more like theirs.

Would you ask a single friend for relationship advice? Or would you
ask a bitter divorced couple? No, you’d ask a happy couple for
advice on how to create a happy relationship.

Would you ask your buddy who can’t hold a job for advice on
becoming financially independent? Of course not! You’d ask someone
who’s succeeded in that area of life. But more precisely, you’d
ask someone who succeeded in a way that’s acceptable to you. A bank
robber might have become financially

independent through theft, but if you don’t approve of stealing
from others, then that person isn’t the right source for you.

Want health and fitness advice? Great. Who do you ask? Someone who
walks their talk, or your fat chain smoking doctor?

You get the idea.

When it comes to lifestyle design, I think I’m a pretty good person
to listen to because I’VE SUCCEEDED IN CREATING THE IDEAL LIFE I
ENVISIONED FOR MYSELF OVER 20 YEARS AGO. And as you just read above, I
didn’t start my journey with any advantages or connections. I also
made a lot of mistakes along the way. But I did it. And I know you can
