REASON #1:

“You have never followed a professionally designed Annual Training Plan that was created for you to maximize your potential, optimize your recovery & adaptation to training, target your weaknesses, and have you peak for the playoffs/championships.”

The truth is, it’s very expensive to hire a good Strength & Conditioning professional to develop for you and coach you through a year long training plan.

Unfortunately, most hockey coaches are uneducated and simply don’t understand the importance of a Strength & Conditioning program to player development. So they ultimately decide to take on the duties as “Head Coach” and “Strength & Conditioning Coach “(with absolutely no education human anatomy & physiology, or any formal training as a human performance coach).

REASON #2:

“You have trusted your team’s head coach as the “expert” on Strength & Conditioning, and followed their training advice to prepare for the season”.

Your team’s Head Coach is indeed the expert on skill development, strategy, chalk-talk, X’s and O’s, and coaching breakouts, power plays and D-zone coverage… or at least they should be! However, they are NOT an expert Strength & Conditioning coach! If they’ve dedicated their lives to becoming a Head Coach of a hockey team, that is time they have not dedicated to developing as a Strength & Conditioning Professional – it is impossible to be an expert at both! Their idea of strength & conditioning consists of taking the team for some “dry land training” sessions in the weeks leading up to the season: a few runs/jogs as a team, going to the do the stairs with some push ups at the top, and some bag-skates at the rink. These team training sessions will not only further develop imbalances that will leave you highly vulnerable to injury, but they have irreversible, negative effects on your power & speed potential! Oh yeah, and they do absolutely nothing to help you peak for the most important time of year.

The human body is an extremely complex system with so many interconnected variables, it takes years and years of education and experience to really understand how to properly prepare athletes for high performance.

REASON #3:

“Your ideas of how to train for hockey have been influenced by what you read in a magazine, your friends who are athletic, or other people at the gym (other non-experts)”.

It is natural to want to ask those around us for advice on how to improve in any areas of our life. However, your friends and those big strong guys at the gym that you’ve gotten some training advice from are also NON-experts, and their tips will hinder your development as a player! Unless of course, their advice to you is that you seek out who the experts are, in which case you should listen to them! However, this usually is not their advice.

Furthermore, their well-intended but misinformed training advice is most likely modeled around what they have done to get some average results for their personal goals, for their body (which is very unique and different from yours).

Most of these friends are probably training like bodybuilders (as this is the dominant training philosophy prevalent in most fitness clubs). Too many hockey players think that if they train their arms like their bodybuilder friends, that they will have arms that are strong for hockey. Training for hockey is a different kind of strong! If you want to be slow, bulky, immobile & injury prone on the ice, then keep listening to those influences!

This Reason #3 is so common amongst hockey players, because there are a lot more fitness clubs (gyms) than there are “sport conditioning facilities”, and so the influences in that environment are bound to enter your head when you’re working out there.

REASON #4:

“You’re eating garbage food that is taxing your system, instead of fueling your body with food that will optimize your recovery, conditioning and athletic development”.

Most athletes eat terribly, plain and simple. Most athletes do not consume foods that will optimize their athletic development. You’ve probably heard about a few NHL players _____(insert name here)________ who explained in an interview that they finally just started eating well this off-season and how it’s made a huge difference in their game, and they showed up to camp in great shape, etc…

Are you kidding me? When I hear these stories I still have to ask myself, what is a professional hockey player doing with his life if he is not properly eating as a world class athlete should be eating? Doesn’t he take his career seriously? This boggles my mind, but doesn’t surprise me when you consider that even the most skilled hockey players in the world still have lots to learn about how to properly train for hockey – only around the turn of the millennium did all 30 NHL teams employ a full-time Strength & Conditioning Coach… but as of 2011, in the AHL, less than 10 of the 30 teams employ a full-time S&C Coach! There is still so much room for improvement.

Those players (who don’t eat well, and don’t understand the complex systems involved in training and conditioning themselves for hockey) are fortunate enough to have made the pros on the basis of their tremendous on-ice skills, but are usually very weak, imbalanced, highly injury prone, and don’t dominate the league like their skill set should allow them to. Yes, all of those qualities I just mentioned are affected by your nutritional habits, just as they are by your training plan.

The truth is, as a hockey player (just like the general population) you are exposed to so many external influences and cues that have conditioned you to make food choices based on reasons other than “is this the best fuel for my body right now?”.

If you hope to optimize your development as an athlete year after year, it’s time to break this cycle of thinking, and re-train your mind to select foods that will build you into the machine that can’t be stopped on the ice!

REASON #5:

“You’ve never properly assessed and evaluated yourself objectively to determine what you need as an athlete”.

Without a comprehensive evaluation, you can’t possibly know where you should be focusing your training. You should be focusing your training on your weaknesses, as identified by tests that are backed by sports science.

If you haven’t properly identified your weaknesses, you’re very likely to be a player who is currently working out by trying to build on a poor foundation – this will inhibit your response & adaptation to training, and set you up for failure & injury! What good is all that skill and talent if you’re wearing a suit and watching the game from the stands (injured), instead of being on the ice dominating?

REASON #6:

“You think that your genetics or “politics” (two factors that are out of your control) are the reasons why you aren’t playing in the league you should be, and why you aren’t the best conditioned machine on the ice”.

Here is an important truth you need to realize: you have not reached your genetic ceiling as an athlete! For years and years you have not been training properly, and because you haven’t been training properly you have not yet maximized your genetic potential. You should no longer use the excuse that “you just don’t have the genetics or the natural talent to be the best”. Every system and every physical quality can be trained! Only once you have optimized your training (and all the variables that contribute to your development as an athlete) does your “genetic potential” become a limiting factor.

Sure, hockey coaches have “political” reasons why they don’t pick some players for a team: maybe they’ve known that other player a long time and so they picked them instead… maybe you played well in tryouts but just didn’t have the build they were looking for to fit the make-up of their time… maybe they just didn’t get a fair opportunity to see what you can do on the ice. Don’t let any of these be excuses for why you’re not playing where you want to be playing!

You have to leave no questions in scouts’ and hockey executives’ minds that you are the right choice, by properly preparing yourself to be an outstanding player that they will want on their team. To stand out from the rest, you have to do what they’re not doing, and start training like a professional!

BUT WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE MY ADVICE?

Well, firstly, allow me to tell you a bit about my background to give you a better idea of who I am and where my expertise comes from.

Hi, my name is Anthony Janicas.
