You don't need to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on
credit repair through
credit law firms and credit repair clinics. There are no magic
secrets, loopholes or
tricks which they know that will fix your credit any faster or more
effectively than you can
do on your own. Laws and regulations which govern the activities and
guidelines by
which credit bureaus can report your credit history are very clear
and to the point. The
Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which oversees and regulates the
behavior and
practices of the credit reporting industry through the Fair Credit
Reporting Act, advises
that the best credit repair available is the credit repair you can
do yourself. Furthermore,
the FTC will warn you that negative credit marks resulting from
bankrupticies,
judgements or collection accounts can NOT magically be removed.
There are, however,
strategies for dealing with adverse credit items, and this manual
provides insight on
how to make the most out of a bad credit history, and end up with
positive results by
getting the loan you want. Don't let bad credit hurt you any longer.

FAQs about credit and credit repair...

Q.- What information can a credit report contain?

A.- A credit bureau report will contain basic identifying
information such as name, social
security number, and address, and can also include phone number,
previous address(s),
and employer(s). Credit history information could include previous
and current types of
credit, credit providers, payment habits, outstanding obligations
and debts, and the extent
of the credit granted. The public record information is usually
limited to tax liens, judgments,
and bankruptcies. The names of those businesses that have requested
information on the
consumer in the recent past are also listed.

A.- You don't actually have just one credit rating. Each bureau
collects information it receives from
the credit granting community: banks, finance companies, department
stores, taxing authorities,
landlord and other credit grantors. It's a categorized file of
information furnished by the companies
with whom you've done business. It will show your open accounts,
with balances and credit limits;
whether you pay them on time; whether any of them are, or were
turned over for collection; any suits,
judgments or tax liens, and so on. Sometimes it can even include a
spouse's name, his or her
social security number, employer, and income, and whether you own or
rent your home. It is an
indication of how well you pay back your debts. It shows whether you
pay on time, and in full. It will
also show late payments and missed payments, too.

What might be referred to as a rating is a credit score. This is a
complex calculation, which helps the
creditor understand the chance of a default. It does not
automatically mean yes or no to credit.
However, the higher your score, the better your chances are for
being approved and how favorable
your terms will be. Creditors decide whether to grant credit,
provide a credit card or loan, based on
their own criteria and the history they see on the report in
consideration of what products they have to
offer. They will look at the total outstanding loans (that includes
your credit card balances) and also
your credit limit to see how much credit you could get if you
charged all your accounts to their
maximum and didn't pay back the money.

Q.- Are credit reports difficult to read or understand?

A.- No, credit reports are NOT difficult to read. There are three
main credit bureaus - Equifax, Experian,
and Trans Union - each of their credit reports look different. Your
credit report will have many codes on it.
But, you will have a key, a guide, or an explanation with the
report. It's important to study it and see what is
in the report. You might see inquiries on your report. For example,
when a person is buying a car, and
shopping price, it is possible that several car dealers ran a bureau
report. This, in itself, is not harmful to
your credit score as long as the inquiries are all made by the same
type of lenders (in this case, car
dealers), and all of these inquiries have been made within a 30-day
timeframe. Sometimes a creditor will
turn down a person for excessive inquiries, thinking that the person
has been recently applying for a lot
of credit and been turned down.

Q.- How can I repair my credit report?

A.- Watch out for credit repair agencies and clinics! The Federal
Trade Commission has said, There are
no legitimate credit repair agencies. There are several offers,
particularly on the Internet and late night TV,
advertising the ability to fix or erase bad credit. Some charge
hundreds or even thousands of dollars to do
what you can do yourself. More advice from the Federal Trade
Commission warns, Don't do business with
any company that does not tell you your legal rights and what you
can do yourself -- for free.

Here are a few facts to seriously consider... negative information
can be reported for seven years.
Bankruptcy information can be reported for 10 years. Information
based on an application for a job with
a salary of more than $75,000 has no time limitation. And,
information concerning a lawsuit or
judgement can be reported for 7 years, or until the statute of
limitations runs out, whichever is longer.

The law which governs credit reporting allows for these timeframe
provisions. Furthermore, the
time period for negative information starts from the last time you
were late, not from the last time
you made payment on the account. Negative information will haunt
you, and provide for a rocky
state of financial health, unless you take matters in hand and do
something about it.
