How old does a child have to be to learn to play guitar? There is no exact age, however by the age of 6 they should have the dexterity and concentration to be able to learn to play the guitar.
Should I get an acoustic or electric guitar for my child? Buy a small classical guitar, either half or three quarter size with nylon strings. Electric guitars are too heavy for small children and acoustic guitars have steel strings that will hurt their fingers.
What equipment will I need? All you need to get started is a guitar and a pick (oh and maybe some color pencils!). Before too long you might also want to get a tuner and a metronome. What you will not get: It takes some time to become a guitar hero, so one of the things you will not get is instant success. Like any instrument, learning to play the guitar takes time and practise for any beginner. It can be particularly difficult for younger beginners to play guitar chords, so chords are not included in the book. Guitar tabs can be useful in some situations but this book is built on playing the guitar by reading music notation so guitar tabs are also not used. This age group are visual learners so they also will not have to struggle through long text passages.
