EXCERPT:

Neither Rick nor I said a word for a few minutes, as we became
mesmerized by the flames.
“Tell me about these red-tailed fish,” Rick suddenly blurted out.
I smiled and took a deep breath, then let out a small laugh as I
exhaled.
“Apparently,” I began, “these fish have been spotted by a local
Indian tribe—they have glowing red tails, and allegedly, the fish
attacked one of their horses.”
“What?!” yelled Rick, in disbelief. He chuckled, “Now these fish
are half-muskie and half-piranha!?”
I gave a short laugh and shrugged my shoulders.
“It’s a myth, man” said Rick, smiling confidently, yet staring
at me as if he’d asked a question.
“Listen,” I said, “these people feel that there is a fish like
that in this river—so much, in fact, that they’re paying us big
money just to look. Whether there is a fish like that or not, we have
a job to do. We have to assume these fish exist in order to do the job
right.”
“Hold on, hold on,” Rick quickly responded with his hand in the
air, “let me hear the whole story, from beginning to end. Give me
all the details.”
The fire crackled away in the British Columbia night, lighting up a
spec of parcel in the immense wilderness. We sat by the fire, Rick
cooking dinner and me telling the tale from beginning to end. We
talked, ate and then laughed around the fire for the next couple of
hours.
I looked at Rick, sitting directly across from me. He looked as if he
were a glowing child, listening to a campfire story. His eyes were
wide open as he absorbed every detail. The flames of the fire seemed
to place Rick in a perfect painting that captured the imagination of
an angler.
