Dear Fellow Homestay Parents,
Let me tell you my story. I was a single Business Lady and I decided to have Interntational Homestay Students to add to my income.

My first student was from China and he was shy, homesick and worried about making new friends. He worried alot and stayed in his room much of the time at first.

His parents were worried and phoned him often. They wanted hime to have the best education in Australia.

Then I had a GREAT IDEA!

To start to write advice and instruction sheets for him to carry as a help and guide. I interviewed 100 students. many teachers, a University Professor and other Homestay Parents and created pages of Tips and Secrets for Homestay Students dealing with the cultural challenge.

And You’ll Never Guess What!

I gathered up all the pages and created a book. Then I added some beautiful illustrations by Jock Macneish – a renowned Australian cartoonist – and my book Homestay Australia was finished!

My Students LOVED the book and enjoyed using it as a guide to every day situations.

Other Homestay Parents said my Book was a GODSEND!

You see, my problem was:

Many Students didn’t understand our manners or didn’t use the words please and thanyou (Which drove me MAD!!)

They didn’t put the toilet paper down the toilet (because overseas the drains get blocked) (This also drove me mad let me tell you).

Many students had never seen a dishwasher, mixer taps or clothes dryers and didn’t know how to use this equipment.

Some were really shy and didn’t talk much.

Many Homestay Parents asked:

How should we help the Students with Communication? When should we Explain the “Toilet” issue? What should we feed our students? What should we do if something goes wrong? And many more questions
I bet you think the answers wouldn’t be too hard to find? hmmmmmmmm…?

Let me Tell you… it took me hundreds of hours of research and interviews to gather the information needed for my book.

As you can imagine Maybe there are other people just like me out there? You know who would benefit from my experience – and who want to make life easier by having all the information you will ever need all in one place – one easy to read book!

And PRESTO – 6 months later and many sleepless nights in front of the computer I’ve done it!

and don’t worry… this valuable Resource is for all Students from all countries.

Introducing the Simple Guide that could make all
the Difference for you and your student…

This is What REAL Home Stay Students Say:

Q: Do you think this book would have been beneficial to have on arrival in Australia?

A: “YES – while the cultural shock is still inevitable anyway, you know some different ways from your own country and your own family. I would pay attention to these situations at least so I can avoid a certain embarrassment of course. I wish I had this book before I came to Australia”

A: “YES – when we first arrive in Australia our English is not very good. This book is easy to understand and it tells us what we need to do every day Because this is first time to Australia this helps me with all the basic things I need to know and answers most questions I have in first months here”

A: “This book is very useful to me and helped me a lot on how to get on withipy (vane Stay family. The help on manners for bathroom and toilet was also very helpful to me. Everything is explained simple and easy so I know what to do and how to do the right things. I am not so worried now.”

Dear Joan,
I am writing to congratulate you on your fine publication “Home-Stay Australia” – A guide for International Students staying in Australia. It is a tool greatly needed in the international market here. As a school of 1,350 students K – 12. we have a great interest in international education and in fact offer Manadrin language as compulsory from kindergarten to year 7. after which it becomes elective. We have an international student program where students enrol and study here at our school and we place such students in home stay situations. Your book is a very easy guide for new and indeed longstanding international students arriving at St Pauls Grammar School in Penrith. (I was so impressed with your book we gave a copy to each of our current international students for their information).
Thank you for having the vision and the time to compile this easy to read concise instruction manual which I’m sure will help all international students settle into Australian life.

Dear Joan,
I have been reading a copy of your book “Home-stay Australia” over the last few days and I have just finished it. We have sent copies of your book to our Cornerstone Community Centres in Broken Hill. Canowindra. Swan Hill and our Burrabadine and National Centres to help our Overseas Student coordinators at each centre…
I am thnking that it would be good for all of our overseas students to have a copy of your book when they arrive. which they could fill our for themselves, rather than just a book that sits on our library shelves. What would it cost us to buy Multiple copies to give our overseas students?

Thank you again for all you have put into this book!

Yours sincerely,
Michael Parris
