COMPLIMENT THE WEBSITE, DONT COMPETE WITH IT!

A well designed e-book cover will compliment your site, it wont
compete or clash with it. The covers above were done for
MetaMorphosis.co.nz.... the color scheme was designed to compliment
the theme of the site, as well as add a splash of color to the page.
The colors and fonts AREN'T randomly chosen. Purple and various shades
of blue are part of the feel on this particular website. Also the font
(Tekton/Technical) was incorporated at the request of the website
owner, to blend with the fonts used on the site.

Purple is composed of two primary colors - red and blue. These two
colors have been used on the covers, as well as one other primary
color - yellow. The accepted norm is ONLY 2 PRIMARY COLORS, which is
what has been done here. The book and cd case both have red and
yellow, while the ezine contains blue and yellow.

After a failed attempt at creating my own ebook cover, I decided to
call in a professional. A Google search brought up lots of options. I
tried many of the listed sites looking for someone to give me a
professional and quick ebook cover solution. I shied away from the

SO WHAT\'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COVER THAT CONVERTS WELL, AND A
COVER THAT CONVERTS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL?

There's no doubt that some covers convert better than others -
regardless of the sales copy. The two should work together, combining
to form a strong "BUY" impulse. When they are in tune with each other,
the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

That's one of the reasons that I prefer to do a cover AFTER you
have the sales copy ready (where possible). I can look at the sales
page before I begin the cover, to get a feel for the theme and tone of
your sales pitch....examine some of the keywords, and take into
account the look of your page.

Here's a hypothetical example. Suppose you have a cookery e-book -
a great one with killer sales copy. How do we create a cover that
"does the business"?

IT\'S ALL IN THE MIND

Colors affect emotions. There can be no argument about that - how
many designers take time to explain that to you? YES, you need a
quality looking cover, and YES, the title and images on the cover are
also very important.But colors affect the subconcious, they can create
feelings that we are not even aware of. They can be an extremely
powerful selling tool - or they may give an unwelcome effect if used
incorrectly.
So....back to out cookery book. Firstly, who is the book aimed at,
men, women, or both? Why would I want to know that? Well, orange can
stimulate appetite, amongst other things (Red can also do this). So at
first glance, incorporating this color in the cover can only be good!

But orange is a color prefered by men - it is one of the least
prefered colors of women. SO IF THE BOOK IS AIMED AT BOTH MEN AND
WOMEN, THEN CAREFUL USE SHOULD BE MADE OF THE COLOR ORANGE. Perhaps a
white backgound used to highlight a good looking recipie, and orange
for the bindings.

If on the other hand, the book was aimed at MEN in the kitchen,
then the title may also be orange.

Green would NOT be a wise color choice in this instance ...while it
has associations with freshness and good health, it is more likely to
invoke some of its negative qualities. And an underlying feeling of
guilt and nausea can be one of them. Definitely NOT the feeling you
want to stir with regards to your cookbook!

A LOOK AT TWO REAL ESTATE E-BOOKS

Take a quick glance at the cover on the left. How do you think it
would sell, with a title such as _"FINANCIAL PROFITS IN TODAYS
DECLINING REAL ESTATE MARKETS: your guide to making the most of
foreclosure and shortsales"?_

My guess is not well at all... a snappy and attention grabbing
title is needed (I had nothing to do with the title by the way, that
was supplied by the author).

But that's not my job - my job is to create a cover that conveys a
certain message, within the first few seconds of seeing it. So this
cover was made with a horror theme .... dark sky, tombstone, and a
house that reminds you of that old Alfred Hitchcock movie.

The focus of the cover has been moved away from simply real estate
(which many people will find boring), to the words in the title -
DEATHand real estate. The sales copy will provide the details of WHY
you should buy this book - the cover will give some visual impact to
it.

THE SECOND REAL ESTATE COVER

Now take a look at the first draft for a recent cover on the right
This is an entirely different approach. The elements of the cover are
combined to send one message - TRUST -important in a high priced
ticket item.

* Company Logo. The first step to building trust.
* Color. The background is blue - A soothing color that can evoke a
feeling of calmness, trust, and acceptance.
* People. The author is on the cover, not hiding behind a name. That
also builds trust. And a happy couple is placed BEFORE material goods.

* The Benefits. Nice house, nice car, and a happy couple ... who
could ask for more?

Well, I DID warn you that this wasn't your typical sales letter - I
hope you're still with me!

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

If you have taken the time to read the page above (I know most
people skim read - I do as well!) then perhaps you have some idea of
my design philosophy. I believe there is more to a good e-book cover
than just a terrific looking design. Words, images, and colors, should
combine with the sales copy to produce an effect on the prospective
customer.

So what is it that makes the customer take that extra step and
click on the "BUY NOW" button? On a concious level, they KNOW the
cover isn't real - that it's merely a symbol for an electronic
download. And if they thought about it, they would realize that the
cover may bear little relationship to what's actually contained within
the e-book.

So it's not the concious level that you're appealing to. It's the
SUBCONCIOUS level. This simple fact seems to get overlooked by those
that think a brilliant work of art alone will persuade the customer to
buy. Its perfectly true, a sloppy cover will put people off quickly.
So the quality needs to be high.

BUT THAT\'S NOT THE WHOLE STORY

People have very little control over how their emotions affect
them. Words will paint a mental picture, but that picture will vary
from person to person, depending upon their lifes experiences.

But a book cover is different - you are giving information
visually. THE CUSTOMER WILL SEE THE PICTURE THAT YOU WANT THEM TO SEE.
And that's important!

OKAY, ENOUGH OF THAT, HOW DO YOU GET THE COVER YOU WANT FOR YOUR
E-BOOK?

HOW TO ORDER A COVER

You supply the title, and any byline/author name that you want to
appear on the cover. If you have a particular image that you want to
see on the cover, then send that too. Most customers don't however,
and that's fine - I will source appropriate images. If you have a
preference for cover color, fonts etc, then let me know that too.
Again, many customers leave this to me, but I'm always mindful that
it's YOUR cover - I will of course design one that fits your idea of
how it should look.

_Some fonts work better than others...if you're not sure what works
then I will find the one that's right._

You can expect your first draft cover to arrive by email WITHIN 48
HOURS, although it may be sooner in many cases.

NOTE: If you have any special requirements (such as hard to find
images that you would like me to source for your cover) then this may
take more time. But every effort will be made to deliver within 48
hours.

will be taken to a page that has an email address, and contact
details. After sending me the details of your cover, I will confirm
receipt of your order, and begin work on the cover.

A first draft copy will arrive in your inbox within 48 hrs. This
gives you the chance to ask for modifications - the cover will not be
put into a 3D format untill you're COMPLETELY happy with the results.
Shortly after that, you will receive 4 sizes of your 3D cover, plus a
flat file that can be used insde your e-book (original png files can
be included as well, if required).

COVER OPTIONS

So what options do you have with your e-book cover? Coming shortly,
wiill be a page showing the different styles available. But nothing is
set in concrete - I design the angles, thickness etc of each book to
the individual cover. In other words, you are not locked into just one
or two styles.

I have been accused of being a perfectionist, in the past. Too
fussy, everything has to be "just so". I take that attitude with your
e-book cover as well. And there will be the odd time that I simply
cant get the cover to you within 48 hours. But I wont make a rush job
to get it out the door. You deserve the best that I can produce, and I
do all that I can to ensure you get it. If my workload gets to where I
