The research is meticulous. The presentation is outstanding. Dann Isbell has placed the '60s under a microscope and exposed the obvious and obscure with equal precision. To those of us who grew up in this decade, he has encapsulated our musical lives perfectly.

Isbell takes a fresh look at the charts and ranks every song with precision...from the ones you missed to the ones you can't forget. Isbell's exhaustive research shines new light on this rich facet of '60s culture for fans and music scholars alike. This is very well done.

Here's what others had to say about RANKING THE '60s

I had so much fun poring over RANKING THE '60s! I'd go down the list and read the title of a song, like No. 941, "Cindy's Birthday" by Johnny Crawford (I had a crush on him!), and immediately I would be cast back in time to my younger, more carefree days of youth and the good emotions that I felt back then. I found myself singing songs that I'd completely forgotten about until I saw them again in RANKING THE '60s. And then I would find myself smiling. Smiling for the memories the song evoked, smiling for the familiarity of a good tune, smiling to find that my memory is not nearly as bad as I thought it was. This is definitely a feel-good book!

I took a break from my hectic life raising five adopted kids to walk down Memory Lane and didn't have to go far before stopping at song No. 35 "Sherry" by the 4 Seasons. For a moment I forgot about the present and thought back about how happy I was when two older neighbors invited me to join them on a pretend stage to take turns singing "Sherry." I was so happy that they included me in their activities for the first time ever. Thank you RANKING THE '60s for bringing back this warm memory.

The music of the 1960s - top 40 radio stations all across the U.S. ranked the songs and counted them down each week when they were hits. Dann Isbell has ranked them one more time as oldies. I can see RANKING THE ‘60s being a valuable book for anyone interested in an important decade in American music. For me, an oldies collector who listened to all of these songs as hits, the book brings back memories. Just seeing the listing for "Rag Doll" by the 4 Seasons (song No. 160) puts me in the back seat of the car as my father drove the family to a picnic in the summer of '64. "Spinning Wheel" by Blood, Sweat & Tears (at No. 190) makes me think about listening to the radio with my first girlfriend as we waited until late at night to watch coverage of the first moon landing in 1969. The song was still in hot rotation that day. "Poor Little Puppet" by Cathy Carroll is one of those great but almost forgotten songs (song No. 5784). After running down the rankings, I pulled that one out along with a handful of others I wanted to hear again. It was like reuniting with an old friend.
