Why a Guide for Students Leaving School was written

University Wisdom was written by Vanessa McCallum who, as a university student tutored high school leavers in their final year in their own homes.

"I tutored around 15 students each week and all of them had questions about what it was like at university and how they should prepare" Vanessa explains. "Most of the parents of these students hadn't been to uni themselves so they were also curious and unable to advise their children."

University Wisdom just brings all the questions and answers together.

This book is a compact guide for school leavers or mature aged students starting at university, college or tafe. It is easy to read and is written in a language that students can relate to and is very interactive, asking readers to write down ideas as they go.

After reading "University Wisdom" I would advise parents and grandparents to seriously consider purchasing this book for their children.

As a grandparent myself and having a lot to do with my grandson's friends, I feel it would be one of the best investments you could make.

Here's what the Vice Chancellor of Monash University had to say...

The transition from High School to University is one of the more significant milestones faced by young people. The large, much less personal and often intimidating environment of the University replaces the personal and secure environment of the High School. Less emphasis is placed on teacher-directed learning and more onuses are placed on students to be responsible for their own learning.

Comfortable peer group relations are disturbed and, for many, the challenges of living away from home and managing personal finances are faced for the first time. Young people experience new temptations and questions relating to motivation, direction and meaning often arise for the first time. Is it any wonder that this time often causes students much anxiety and that not all navigate the difficulties without mishap?

Schools and Universities now invest considerable resources to help students manage their passage between High School and University. But given the individual nature of the issues confronted, ultimately the individual student must arrive at his or her own resolution. This book will be an invaluable guide. It is filled with good sense. Moreover, it is written in an accessible style and is full of interest.

The combination of well-written pithy advice, personal anecdotes, quotations, homespun philosophy and exercises for the readers to help refine their own thoughts, provides a medley of mutually reinforcing inputs which will ensure that the messages are transmitted effectively and retained. All the important topics are covered, including study skills, examination techniques, work-life balance, motivation, career choice, curriculum vitae preparation and many other areas. Vanessa McCallum has used the insights gained from her own experience, the experiences of her friends and family as well as her many years as a tutor at University in the preparation of this wonderful guide.

The transition to, and time spent at University cannot be considered in isolation from the rest of our lives and careers. Matters such as the decision to go to University, the choice of course and preparation for careers and lives beyond University are all dealt with in an interesting and informative way. Moreover, the emphasis in all these matters is on a rounded experience rather than a single focus on material or professional success. Participation in sporting activity and clubs and societies is encouraged.

Advice is individualized so that different assessments of what is important are accommodated with the overarching theme, as Einstein put it "We have to do the best we can. This is our sacred human responsibility." The goal-orientated, plan-driven nature of the advice given would delight Einstein! But it is leavened by a sympathetic tone, which provides a supportive framework for those who are less effective than the author in structuring and framing their lives and relentlessly ticking off achievements on their master plan of life.

Lives evolve in different ways, but the advice in this book will guide young people to a well rounded, rewarding University experience and prepare them for a rich and enjoyable life beyond University.

It's wonderful and the way that you've covered it and the summaries the whole works - you've put so much into it and I think that's why it's so adaptable to so many other things other than just people going to uni.
Just from my sort of read of it and just putting a few notes here and there it's just so well written that it's such a good read for all ages and I think as you said, to help parents as well as grandparents who are in the world of children and grandchildren asking questions and being needed. And to be able to refer to it because of the way that it's set out and written.
Congratulations Vanessa.

The style of the book is straightforward and conversational and Vanessa McCallum has personalised the book by liberally illustrating with anecdotes from her own experiences as a student at University. In addition, she provides charts, tables and invaluable website addresses for further research. Every topic is clearly headed and numbered and a summary is provided at the end of each chapter. In addition, the final chapter brings together all the chapter summaries and this, together with a glossary and index, make the book an extremely useful reference tool. In University Wisdom Vanessa McCallum has left no stone unturned.

I recommend this book to all students completing secondary studies and contemplating further education, and also those already at university.

I am confident that they will find many relevant and helpful suggestions within its pages.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly as a practical guide for students.
The sections on study, the management of time and money provide present-day students with a map for living in their new environment.
It is an academic work that is simple to read and understand that has filled a gap in varsity education.
I will recommend this book to students and parents of future students.
A wonderful achievement Vanessa.
