"I started off as a student at the University College Cayman
Islands, but soon moved onto working at a local dive centre. Initially
I worked as a general boat hand, helping out on the dive boats,
preparing the equipment etc. I then changed jobs and worked on a beach
hiring out Jet Skis. I had the most awesome time on the island living
and working in the sun, met some interesting people and had a
fantastic social life. I even had time to travel around the
region.....If you're looking for jobs in the Caribbean I would
thoroughly recommend reading this package as your key to an adventure
in the Cayman Islands". Dan,UK
Dear Job Seeker, My Cayman Adventure
I've lived and worked in the Cayman Islands for several years and
so I know first hand the lifestyle and financial benefits that are
available. So I thought I would share with you a brief summary of my
Cayman Adventure. (An extract from the introduction of my book)
During my time in the Cayman Islands I met people from all over the
world who had travelled thousands of miles to take up opportunities in
the Cayman Islands.
Many didn't have top qualifications and weren't specialists in a
particular field, but they all had one thing in common - the desire to
succeed and earn money. They were just hard working folk who had set
their sights on a new path and fancied a bit of an adventure along the
way.
Honeymoon Couple work together on a beach.
I remember meeting a guy from Bangladesh who worked at a garage - he
had moved with a couple of friends to a have a better life and to earn
money. Another friend of mine was a Philipino man who worked as a
Security Guard to send money home to his family.
Another couple I met from the US visited the Cayman Islands on their
honeymoon and loved it that much decided to uproot and begin married
life in the sun. They soon found employment and worked together in the
water sports industry, and this was all without any prior knowledge or
experience in that field.
Friends from around the world.
Soon after arriving I had contacts and friends from all over the
world, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Jamaica, South
America who worked in all areas from hotels, restaurants, bars, shops,
beach front, diving, on boats etc.
And that's what got me thinking - just how amazing it was that all
these people had been brought together to live and work together in
the same community from all over the world.
It then occurred to me for all those who are here on this magical
island there must be thousands who want an opportunity like this but
don't know that it really exists or how to find the job, make contact,
navigate the immigration rules. And for many people who want an
adventure, a new life or an escape from their present existence - they
may not even be aware of the Cayman Islands or the opportunities that
await.
After 3 years - A Porsche and an island home.
I was one of these people. I had vaguely heard of the Cayman Islands
but didn't really know were it was or anything about. When one day,
out of the blue, I heard that a friend of mine had secured himself a
job on Grand Cayman and was off. He spent over three and half years
there and ended up buying his own place on the island. When he
returned home he'd saved enough money to buy himself a Porsche - and
he'd had a great life out there at the same time
I was soon on a flight to the Caribbean.
A year or so later I was looking for a change of direction, and spoke
to my friend and quizzed him about how he'd managed to change his
life.I followed actually what he told me and completed the relevant
application forms and sent them off - I must say that help and
information that I received from my friend was invaluable.
But even with the specialist information it took several months until
I'd secured the position I wanted. Then the real adventure began. I was
on a flight enroute to the Caribbean. I'd travelled on my own but soon
met up with some others at the airport who were in the same position
as me.
On arrival I was met by the employers representative and taken to a
hotel where I ended up staying for a few weeks, and luckily in my case
- all paid for by the employer. During these first weeks I sorted out
some affordable rented accommodation and purchased a small second hand
car.
I got a job driving a speed boat and riding Jet Ski's.
After 3 months of working in one role I changed jobs and landed
myself a job working on a RIB (rigid inflatable) speed boat and
driving Jet Ski's. I spent my days driving a boat around 'North Sound'
and up to coral reefs. I would see the stingrays playing and being
petted by the tourists and sometimes follow large sea turtles.
Lunchtimes were spent at the local yacht club after i'd moored up my
boat.
Easy access to Florida, other Caribbean Islands and South America.
In those few years I travelled extensively around the region visiting
Cuba, Puerto Rico, Florida twice, New York, South Carolina and I even
spent a month in Antigua. Grand Cayman is centrally placed for travel
to all parts of the Caribbean, Florida, New York and South America.
There are lots of flights to Miami every week and from there
connections to all over the world. I could jump on a plane and be in
Florida in 90 minutes or Jamacia in less than an hour. Once i went to
Cuba for a day trip. I got a flight around 10am, did some shopping and
was back in Grand Cayman by tea time.
I dived over coral reefs and swam with sharks and sea turtles.
I became a qualified Scuba Diver, something I wanted to do all my
life. I dived over coral reefs and swam with sharks and sea turtles. I
learnt to drive a boat and a Jet Ski and attained my Small Boat
Coxswains Certificate. I had a go at Sailing and became fairly
proficient at Free Diving.
All in all I had most amazing time of my life, met people who I never
would have done, experienced things I'd only dreamt about and
travelled to places that were otherwise unaffordable.
A sun tan and thousands of dollars in my pocket!
And when I returned home I had one amazing sun tan and thousands of
dollars in my pocket!
After the amazing time i'd had I wanted to make it easy for someone
else with no knowledge of the Cayman Islands, the lifestyle, people or
the fantastic adventure that can be found, to be able to come along
and change the direction of their lives, even if it is a temporary
change for just a few years.
So i decided to put together a package to introduce job hunters,
adventure seekers and travelers to the Cayman Islands and help them
secure a job on this beautiful tropical paradise.

Real Life Stories of Expats who have made the move to The Cayman
Islands.
Dan. (UK)
"I first went over to Grand Cayman at the age of 18. I'd applied for
my own student visa and attended a 1 year course at the University
College Cayman Islands or UCCI as it's known locally. I wasn't sure
what I wanted to do at this stage but I took a course in Tourism and
Hospitality, I figured that since the island had tons of tourists I
might as well study and get a job in that industry." "After I finished
with studies I started working at a local Scuba diving centre. I
wasn't really qualified in this area so began helping out around the
place. It was my job to get the equipment ready for the guests who
were diving that day". "I soon moved on to the boats. This was a
really cool job, being out on a boat on the beautiful Caribbean Sea as
well as picking up some pretty big tips from the guests. I still
couldn't dive myself at this stage but as I worked for a dive centre
this was soon rectified. As a perk of the job, as if I needed anymore,
I was given free diving tuition. In just 3 months I took the PADI dive
qualifications and passed my Open Water, Advanced Diver, Rescue Diver
and finally Dive Master all courtesy of the dive centre." "My next job
was working for Red Sail, the islands most successful and established
water sports business. I moved from the Georgetown area to work in the
East End, a very rural and beautiful part of the island." "I was
posted to the Morrits resort and worked right on the beach meeting new
guests at the resort every week. My role was to introduce them to
'Watersports' and make sure they had a fun but safe time. I would
conduct a safety briefing about the equipment and then give a
demonstration of how they operated. Usually I worked hiring out the
Jet Skis. A really good perk of this job was I got to use a Jet Ski
whenever I wanted it, free of charge. I also got dive excursions, boat
trips and free use of most other facilities." "I moved house 2 or 3
times. I lived in Northside, East End and Georgetown. Each time I
moved I quickly found new people to rent with as housemates; this is a
great way to keep the cost down and make a really nice place more
affordable. I would thoroughly recommend a life in the Cayman Islands.
I had some great times and met so many friends over there."
Jackie. (Canada)
"Hi my name's Jackie and I'm from Vancouver in Canada. My story is
real short. I first came to Grand Cayman in April 2006 to do an intern
with Sunset Divers. I spent about a month with those guys and during
that time I just fell in love with the place, the dive school and the
island". "After I'd finished the month I was offered a job there and
then. Unfortunately I couldn't accept it straight away as I still had
college to finish. Luckily for me they kept the vacancy open and after
I'd completed college I returned to take up the position." "I now work
on a tropical island teaching people to dive, no more cold Canadian
winters for me. I can't think of anything better." "I guess the only
drawback is that after seven years you get 'rolled over' and have to
leave the island for 12months, but I suppose that means there's always
new people coming to the island taking up new jobs, which keeps things
interesting. I love the place I don't want to be anywhere else."
Raul. (South America)
"I arrived in Grand Cayman, on a three week holiday, after a five
year contract on the cruise lines. I was visiting friends and planned
to do as much diving as the body could possibly take; at the same
time, I planned to finish up my dive master training as well as take
some time to get organized and see where life was going to take me
next". "Without any big plans, I handed some resumes out to a couple
of dive shops and before I knew it, I had a job. I worked for a few
years in the dive industry". "At this point, I knew life was steadily
shaping up for me and the amazing woman I was dating; this is about
the time I was starting to look for more of a career in life and saw
an advert in the local paper that the police service was recruiting. I
dropped by, picked up the necessaries and started the application
process". "With English being my second language, here is where the
challenges began. After I got accepted and started basic police
training, I quickly realized that the job of a police man involved a
lot of writing; therefore, good grammar was a must". "I intensified
what I set out to do a few years back and that was to learn the
English language to where I was some-what fluent. The hardest was to
bury myself in the books like I was back in high school; I didn't like
this one bit, my priorities were quickly set straight, it was either
choose to be lazy or do something that later would open up a world of
opportunities for me and my family; and I'm I ever happy I chose the
latter." "The hard work I put in to find a job in the Cayman Islands,
allowed me later on in life to successfully complete, what I think to
be, one of the most difficult selection processes to any police
service in North America". "Other than the fact that I had to teach
myself another language, I had very little challenges or issues living
and working in the islands. It has been the most amazing time of my
life".
