WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS?
HERE'S MY STORY...
Well, I'm a pilot just like you, and I don't consider myself the
best aviator in the world. I still scratch my head at wiring diagrams
and systems schematics and I have a FAR regulation retention of about
20 minutes. I just try to do my job to the best of my abilities, be as
safe and competent as I can manage, and make mistakes only once.
I must admit I got into flying for the romantic ideal that I still
believe it is. You know, man and machine, fearlessly taking to the sky
and all that. I still feel it on every takeoff. I find that we all
have that sense of adventure stirring in our soul.
A life as a professional pilot _seemed_ like a great way to have a
lot of fun and make a lot of money, while conveniently avoiding
"working for a living," which never had much appeal to me.
Out in the workforce with my fresh pilot certificates, I realized
that there was something the flight schools didn't spend much time
teaching us:
* How to get good work and STAY employed
* ALL of the employment possibilities that could be found and
specifically how to target each one
* The FASTEST way to that BIG salary
Sure, there were a few "fast-track" programs into regional airlines
and a lot of (empty) promises about the future of the industry, but in
general my aviation education was _incomplete_ without any serious
career training.
(Ah, you can't blame them. Business is business and their business
is pilot certification. And with hefty financial backing coming from
the same regional airlines, they certainly wouldn't want to give away
any tempting "extra" information.)
Without a money pile to buy a job, I spent years building time in
gradually bigger airplanes, making slightly more money each time,
rationalizing to myself I was "paying-my-dues."
YEARS LATER... I was still flying a prop and not making much
progress. I tried everything. Job fairs, pilot resume services,
posting my resume all over the internet, even walking around handing
them out to people.
You name it, I tried it.
Lots of roadblocks and very little results.
The dream I had seemed so far away and I was too old to be making so
little money with so much farther to go.
After a chance meeting with a very successful pilot in the lobby of
the FBO, I realize that there _could_ be a way that I could go
straight into the DREAM JOB that I really wanted faster than I could
ever expect.
I devised a plan of action and set out to see if it could work.
Admittedly, I made some more mistakes, but I was able to quickly
learn and "tweak" my technique and mindset until...
SUCCESS!

(I have this weird vision of pilots standing in line at a job fair
like Russians during Soviet times, waiting for their loaf of bread,
growing hungrier by the day.)

prospective employer.
By becoming _unique_ with a truly outside-of-the-box approach to
your job search, you will break the pattern of boring cookie-cutter
