If you're like most people, you currently have no plan regarding a
smallpox outbreak or a bioterrorism incident other than to follow the
herd and do what the government and medical authorities tell you to do
if something terrible happens.
And the authorities are a big help with their dire warnings and
vague predictions, aren't they?
As reported by the New York Times in February of 2005:
WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 -- Top intelligence officials said today that
they remained concerned that terrorists were regrouping to attempt
another major attack on the United States and also said that Iran
posed a rising threat in the Middle East.
"It may be only a matter of time before Al Qaeda or other groups
attempt to use chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapons,"
Porter J. Goss, the director of central intelligence, told the Senate
Intelligence Committee in an annual report on threats to the United
States.
Mr. Goss appeared alongside other intelligence chiefs, and on a day
when several other top cabinet members were appearing before Congress
to defend budget proposals. One of them, Defense Secretary Donald H.
Rumsfeld, also said that Al Qaeda and its allies were likely to be
planning a major attack on American targets.
Well, this kind of news report suggests to me that THE GOVERNMENT IS
AS CONFUSED AS THE REST OF US, though it is certainly spending a lot
of money and making a lot of noise about getting prepared for "a major
attack on American targets."
You'd think all these years after 9/11 that the government would
have its ducks in a row, but I'm afraid that's not the case,
especially regarding the smallpox threat.
Look at this sorry and absurd timeline...
On one hand,
* The government said in late June of 2002 it was going to
VACCINATE APPROXIMATELY 15,000 HEALTH CARE AND EMERGENCY WORKERS with
one of its smallpox vaccines...
On the other hand,
* In early July of 2002, the government suddenly said it was GOING
TO USE SMALLPOX VACCINES ON 500,000 health care and emergency workers.
Then on September 25, 2002,
* the CDC releases its _SMALLPOX VACCINATION CLINIC GUIDE_, which
talks about vaccinating 1,000,000 people in ten days.
And a few days later, according to _ABC NEWS_...
The Bush administration is preparing to offer the effective but
risky smallpox vaccine to every American before an attack ever occurs.
On October 4, 2002, we read in the _NEW YORK TIMES_...
_The nation's top public health officials said today that they
favored offering smallpox vaccine to the public, even in absence of a
bioterror attack, but only after up to 10 million health care workers
are immunized and after a vaccine is licensed for general use, which
is not likely until 2004._
ON OCTOBER 25, 2002, the FDA licensed a smallpox vaccine that hasn't
been used for thirty years but didn't tell the public about approving
the vaccine until November 2.
Then, on DECEMBER 13, 2002, a _Newsday_ story reported, "President
Bush is setting in motion a plan for quickly giving smallpox
vaccinations to military personnel bound for the Iraq region and
opening a campaign to inoculate emergency teams most likely to
encounter a domestic bioterror attack. He will offer the shots to most
members of the public but won't urge them to get it."
Amazingly, even DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES SECRETARY
TOMMY THOMPSON - who initially ordered 300 million doses of the
vaccine - decided against having it jabbed into his arm.
By MARCH, 2003, doctors and hospital health care workers around the
country had refused for months to take the vaccine themselves and were
telling people they shouldn't either.
By SUMMER OF 2004, the government had apparently given up on its
mass inoculation of health care workers and this expensive program had
quietly disappeared... but you can bet those who made the big bucks on
it are laughing all the way to the bank.
Then, in JANUARY OF 2005, Bob Dorgin of the _LOS ANGELES TIMES_
reported of a smallpox exercise:
WASHINGTON -- At 9:03 a.m., a TV broadcast reported an outbreak of
smallpox in four European countries, and a terrorist group tied to Al
Qaeda claimed responsibility for spreading one of history's most
dreaded diseases.
By midafternoon, as the president of the United States and leaders
of major Western nations struggled to contain a cascade of horrors,
authorities confirmed 3,320 smallpox cases across the globe. They
warned of 660,000 potential victims, major political upheavals and a
collapsing world economy in the weeks ahead.
That was the fake but terrifying scenario played out in a darkened
hotel ballroom here Friday by former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine
Albright and 11 senior European diplomats and politicians. For seven
hours, they grappled with a grim tabletop exercise that fused fact and
fiction to help educate government officials about the growing threat
of bioterrorism
The largely ineffective response of the "leaders," who huddled at a
U-shaped table before 150 invited observers from the U.S. and foreign
governments, exposed some of the likely problems real leaders would
face in a bioterrorism assault.
...
Fortunately, we are not prime ministers anymore," said Jerzy Buzek,
who was prime minister of Poland during the Sept. 11 attacks and
played the same role Friday. Then he summed up what he had learned in
the daylong simulated attack: "Nobody is ready."
Nobody is ready.
At least nobody in authority appears to be ready.
Well, if you're an independent-minded person like me, YOU\'RE NOT

BOTTOMLINE: I don't trust people in authority very much, and I

IS BIOTERRORISM REALLY A
THREAT TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?
I asked myself this question when I started researching information
for my special report not many days after the World Trade Center
Towers crashed to earth, and I continue to ask it on a regular basis.
I still don't have a definitive answer, but I've seen and read
enough in the news and on the Internet to know that I want to have as
many of my bases covered as possible, "just in case."
Here are some reasons why I think it's prudent to be prepared for a
biological event, especially for an outbreak of smallpox...
First off, I admire the reporting of Richard Preston, a man who has
written some of the best work I know of on the topic of smallpox. Way
back in the January 17, 2000, edition of THE NEW YORKER, Preston first
tweaked my interest in bioterrorism when he wrote:
_A really big act of bioterrorism has never occurred, as far as
anyone knows, although the F.B.I. recorded more than thirty threats or
attempts at bioterror during just the first week of January this
year._
_One can only assume that sooner or later some terrorist will
succeed, and an infectious organism will be deliberately released on a
large population. _
_The most dangerous bioweapon on the planet is Variola major, a form
of the smallpox virus. SMALLPOX mirrors the BLACK DEATH of the Middle
Ages in its virulence and contagiousness. _
_During the nineteen-seventies, smallpox was eradicated as a disease
that circulates in the human population, and officially it exists only
in two laboratory freezers, one in the United States and one in
Russia. _
_Unofficially, illicit stocks are almost certainly being kept in
several other countries, including Iraq and North Korea. There is a
vaccine for smallpox, but the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION keeps only
about one dose on hand for every twelve thousand people on earth. _
_In any case, the vaccine wears off: most people today could catch
smallpox easily, even if they were vaccinated in the past. The
consequences of a bioterrorist act involving smallpox would be
devastating. _
HEALTH SECRETARY ORDERS
300 MILLION DOSES OF SMALLPOX VACCINE
One month after the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World
Trade Center and the Pentagon, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
SECRETARY TOMMY THOMPSON called on industry and government to produce
and stockpile 300 million doses of vaccinia virus vaccine by the end
of 2002.
In words that sent a chill up my spine, Thompson said all Americans
should know that _"THEY HAVE THEIR NAME ON A VACCINE SHOT IN OUR
INVENTORY."_
Well, I, for one, do NOT want my name on any new smallpox vaccine in
or out of the government's inventory.
Why not?
BAD REACTION TO SMALLPOX VACCINE
Other than distressing you with the photograph of that poor little
boy to the right, I'll spare you the gory details of how dangerous the
old smallpox vaccine was, but I'm even more concerned about the stuff
that Secretary Thompson ordered for us. Read on...
According to Julie Appleby in the December 14, 2001, edition of USA
TODAY, in order to have the 300,000,000 doses ready in time, some
authorities in the vaccine industry want to cut the number of
participants in vaccine trials and bypass standard safety and efficacy
requirements:
_"To achieve that goal, we would have to radically change our
approach," said Leighton Read, founder of biotech vaccine company
AVIRON and general partner with ALLOY VENTURES in Palo Alto, Calif._
_Read said that might mean cutting the number of volunteers the drug
is tested on from the usual tens of thousands to a much smaller number
and streamlining other rules: "Otherwise it's impossible to imagine
accomplishing a goal of hundreds of millions of doses in anything less
than many years."_
Additionally, in a story by Emma Young in the October 25, 2001, NEW
SCIENTIST, we learn...
_The US government has asked national drug companies to produce and
speed-test new smallpox vaccines. New vaccines usually spend several
years in trials but health secretary Tommy Thompson wants the process
to take just one year. _
_The US government has reportedly promised to legally indemnify
manufacturers, in the event of any court cases over vaccine side
effects._
In May of 2002, Dr. James M. Hughes, director of the CDC's National
Center for Infectious Diseases, pointed out that there will be a major
need for education of the public and health professionals about the
vaccine. "IT\'S NOT A TOTALLY BENIGN VACCINE," he said. Nobody under
30 has received it and no recently trained healthcare providers have
ever administered it.
On December 13, 2002, in a _NEW YORK TIMES_ story, we're told:
Experts said that although parents might now be eager to have their
children vaccinated, their enthusiasm might wane with the inevitable
reports of serious side effects among some military and emergency
personnel.
I'm not alone because by late SUMMER OF 2004, the government's
expensive plan to give the smallpox vaccine to hundreds of thousands
of health care workers was in utter shambles and quietly being allowed
to die a well-deserved death.
UPDATE: By FEBRUARY OF 2005, the government was still throwing
millions of taxpayer's money at new vaccines...
STANFORD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 2005--Researchers at the
Stanford University School of Medicine are conducting a clinical trial
that will test whether a new type of smallpox vaccine can produce
immunity in adults as well as -- or better than -- the vaccine
currently available in the United States. They also hope to determine
whether the new vaccine is safer than the old.
Personally, I don't want any government or pharmaceutical viral
stews in my bloodstream.
Do you?
THE GOVERNMENT HAS
ITS CARDS ON THE TABLE
Most Americans don't seem to realize it yet, but when I read that
Secretary Thompson wanted to rush through enough smallpox vaccine to
inoculate every man, woman, and child in the U.S, I immediately knew
the government was seriously worried about a smallpox "event."
That's when I really put my nose to the research grindstone and
started digging even harder for alternatives to what appears to me may
well be a dangerous smallpox vaccine thrown together by pharmaceutical
companies that don't want to miss out on a huge piece of the estimated
$500,000,000 to $1.9 billion-dollar pie involved with this project.
This sounds to me like another SWINE FLU VACCINE FIASCO [1] in the
making.
So, since I wanted intelligent, workable, alternative choices, I
spent months researching everything I could find on the topic of
smallpox -- in modern medical studies as well as in the archives of
old health literature.
I also knew if I put in enough hours, I would find a wealth of
interesting and potentially helpful information on the Internet.
Information that would provide ancient as well as modern alternative
"how to" approaches to either prevent or treat anthrax, smallpox,
plague, and botulism.
Well, although I continue to update it as I learn more, I've
essentially completed BIOLOGICAL TERROR: A CONSIDERATION OF ANCIENT

WHAT IF, GOD FORBID,
SMALLPOX GETS LOOSE IN THE WORLD?
According to the CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL and statistics from the
past before smallpox was eradicated...
* As many as 30% of the people who contract smallpox will die.
And, according to some, this 30% figure may well be conservative,
given the fact that so many people these days are walking around with
compromised immune systems that can barely ward off a cold much less a
raging case of smallpox.
Anthony Browne, health editor of THE OBSERVER, in a story published
in the United Kingdom on Sunday, October 21, 2001, wrote:
The British Government last week issued emergency guidance to health
professionals on how to deal with an outbreak. The guidance, seen by
THE OBSERVER, says smallpox is a serious threat because it is easily
passed from person to person, has a fatality rate of up to 90 per
cent, can kill in 48 hours, and few people have been vaccinated. "In
the event of a deliberate release, it is unlikely that single, mild
cases will occur - it is more likely that clusters of moderate to
severe disease will be seen.
If smallpox does once again stalk this earth, I predict that

* Many of the doctors will be ill with the same disease or may be
unable to treat all their patients because of limited supplies of
drugs and vaccines.
